“Awesome resort”
Reviewed 5 January 2009

We stayed at the Barcelo Karmina on December 18 to Dec 25th. We flew with canjet, wich is not the best Company but, however, the staff were very friendly. The airport in Manzanillo is beautiful and located beside the pacific ocean, wich had a great view on it.
We took the bus to the resort and the driver were very gentle, they had Corona for a cheap 2$, wich was amazing after a long flight. The ride to the hotel is about 25 minutes and we could admire manzanillo trough the windows.

The resort is absolutely amazing and the people in the front desk were very nice to me and my girlfriend. They upraded our room without asking, wich was very cool.
The room itself was beautiful, probably the best hotel room I've stayed in. Nice bathroom, two televisions, a kitchen table and a large balcony with the pacific ocean view, wow !

The food was great at the buffet restaurant and the staff were very efficient, a+ for the fast service we had !
However, the best restaurant on the resort is the Carioca, for the great food and the view, very romantic.

There are many pools, wich are very clean and a lot of chairs, so you can enjoy the sun and watch the kids play in the waterslide, wich is great.
The Wal-Mart is at 25 minutes of walk and worth it, especially if you want to buy some alcohol, the price is cheap.

We took many excursions with Tlalocs Tour, located at the hotel. We took the Canoas tour, wich was very interesting and the Atv tour, wich was Awesome ! I recommend this atv to all of you because you ride in the mountains and you will go swim into a little lake, the view is speechless. Mago is the representative and she is very kind. Prices are cheap.

At 9pm, there is a show at the exterior theater and it is funny to watch and have a drink.

The only negative thing I can say about the whole resort is that there is no nightlife on the resort. The Carioca restaurant become a disco at 11h30pm, wich is too late because at 10pm, everybody is sleeping !

Reviewed 4 January 2009

Our family just returned from a one week stay at the Barcelo Karmina Palace from Dec 27, 2008 to Jan 3, 2009. I will break things down into different categories to make this easier.

We had a trransfer from the Airport to Karmina Palace by our tour operator. After a long flight this was a welcomed relief. Bags were taken care of and we were met with a nice cool drink at the hotel. Check in was a breeze and service was great, They do use a pool towel card system which is a pain... we were given one each at check in and you had to go to a service desk each time you wanted a new towel.

The rooms are like everyone says... fantastic. Very large with great bathrooms... I would not want to share a room with someone who was not family however, as the bathrooms do afford very little privacy....

The food was well...quite frankly poor. I never once had a wow moment with the food either at the buffet or the a la carte restaurants. Average at best. On the same token we never went expecting to have gourmet food and with our five year old with us it was mainly quick meals for us anyway. Don't go if you are looking for a profound culinary experience.

The service at the restaurants was great... they seemed to love kids and went out of there way to keep our son entertained. The service at the buffets was poor... much better at the a la carte restaurants.

Drinks.... I see a lot of comments on the strenght etc. I did not find a problem with that my biggest complaint was the fact that outside the restaurants and buffets all the drinks are served in cheap plastic cups... no can beer or bottle beer to be had anywhere... all draft in a plastic cup... very cheap.

The pools are great for kids and there is an escape for adults at two adults only pools.. I never once saw a child in any of these pools so there are some mixed reviews on this on this site. Be careful of the waterslide... it is fast and has a big drop at the end... not good for small kids or old dads ! They also do not have anyone at the top ensuring time and distance between each slider so at times it appeared like a bit of a gong show. You will need to get up early a save yourself a spot by the pool....contrary to no reserving of seats this is the only way to get a spot by the pool during busy times. There looked like a lot of room on the beach however, but my family are pool people.

The entertainment is mostly in spanish and people are right when they say most of the staff do not speak english, that being said they would always make an effort to find someone to help you who could speak some english, besides half the fun was trying to communicate. We did get some interesting drinks and food this way !

The kids club unffortunately was a bust for us. The staff did not speak english and for a five year old this was not very comfortable for him, let alone the parents trusting someone to look after their child! No matter to us as we had a great time at the pool.

I did manage to sneak off and golf at Los Hadas. Quite expensive for the calibre of course...but hey being from Canada and to be golfing in Dec/ Jan it was worth it. The rental clubs are brutal... 20 years old and $35.00 U.S. to rent...big rip off. Take a caddy the first time as it is a challenging lay out. I also tried to arange with the hotel to golf at Isla Navidad and El Tamarindo course but this effort was fruitless. This is where I was really dissapointed with the service of the concierge and bell boys... no one wanted to go the extra mile to help. Such a large hotel you think would be able to arrange a trip off their property... no luck. This is not a golfer's hotel, unless you play next door...

One word of caution... if you go over New Year's be prepared for a long noisy night as the hotel hosts a huge party and turn their garden right by the rooms into a big rockin disco.... great if you are without kids.... It did not matter where you stayed that night in the hotel all the guests were kept up to 3:00 a.m. but hey it was New Year's and it was pretty funny to hear a Mexican Band break into Bille Jean and YMCA at midnight... The fireworks were amazing across the whole bay...made the late night worth it.

Overall would I go back? I don't think so. My son had a great time which is why this review gets an average rating... If a group wanted to go back and the price was right I would not kick up much of a fuss... I think when we go to these all inclusives we often expect to much but I have had much better trips to other all-incusives resorts. If they got there act together with better service and quality of food and beverage this place would get great reviews as it is quite a nice setting and beautiful facilty...

just got back today from Mazanillo and wish we were still there. We spent our first 3 nights at the Tesoro resort and requested to be moved after we found there was not relief from the noise. We had our 11 and 7 year old with us so quiet at night was a must.

We spent 4 nights at the Barcelo and quickly realized it was far superior to the Tesoro on many levels.

The food was far better, the rooms were top notch and very clean. The whole resort was very well taken care of. The pool was fantastic especially for the kids. The small beach was perfect for snorkling and it was private. I understand most beaches in Mazanillo are open to the public. There was more than enough lounge chairs at the pool and beach including the nice beds to layout and enjoy the tropical breeze.

We were there for the New Year's party---it was unbelievable how much effort they put into the gala.It was held out doors with the tables set for 1500 guests. They spared no expense on decorations and entertainment. The buffet was huge with roasted pig, lobster, beef, you name it, they had it all!

Things to note that could be improved.

THe kids club did not follow the published schedule of activities. The kids just sat in the room and watched TV (in spanish) or played Xbox. That is okay if they told you this is what they did but the kids expected the activities as listed outside. Our kids did not want to go back especially since the staff didn't speak much English,

The slide on the pool was awesome. My kids went down it at least 150 times---no kidding!. The problem is there is no supervision at the top or bottom. Kids were stopping at the bottom of the slide risking other kids from ramming into them. Fortunately, we didn't notice anyone get hurt and our kids were careful to wait a bit before they went after someone else. As well, it is not for adults but many "dads" tried it out since no one was watching (including me once--it was awesome) Noticed on our last day security was watching and directing the kids--someone must have complained.

watch for trip and fall hazards. We knew someone that fell and broke their wrist and saw others with sprained ankles. Mexico does not have the same building codes as we have in Canada, so don't be surprised to see staircases without handrails and uneven walking surfaces.

Found the staff to very attentive and friendly except for the reception staff. They came across snooty and not very helpful when asking questions. The bellhops were great especially Raul--spoke perfect English since he was raised in California.

Overall, I would recommend the Barcelo and consider it a 5 star compared to Tesoro

The highlight of the week was leaving. The food was absolutely awful, and the staff admitted to filling the liquor bottles with water (more on that later). Breakfast, lunch, and dinner...straight from a can, full of oil and fat, and the same every single day. Rice for lunch, rice for dinner. Its the only Mexican hotel, in my experience, that didn't have any guacamole. Stinky fish with the eyes still in? Got it. Guac? Nada.

Suspicious about the taste of the liquor (though they only serve the absolute bottom of the barrel to all-inclusive guests), we asked if they ever filled the bottles with water to save money. Si! All the time.

It rained when we were there, which would have been fine...IF they didn't close BOTH decent restaurants for dinner for two nights. We were then forced to eat with the 10-person families fighting for a place in the buffet line.

The breakdown: Room was nice. Food was not. Water slide, for kids, was nice. Drinks were not. Staff was nice. Their mastery of English was not (so just know that going in). Restaurant "Carioca" was nice. But the hotel is very very very very family-friendly. So expect screaming children, and packed pools.

Just for the record...we aren't some travel snobs expecting perfection. We are a couple in our late twenties, and we were looking for a week away for some relaxation. Because we got watered-down vodka and rice-a-roni instead, we felt the need to rate on TripAdvisor. Hope this helps someone.

My family and myself stayed at the Barcelo Karmina Palace April 18th and came back very early on April 26th.
We flew Air Transat which is not the best plane to fly in terms of space but that's ok we all made out ok.
Getting to the airport in Manzanillo they had a fabulous idea about checking ppl into their rooms so when you got off the bus that took you to the hotel you could collect your luggage and go directly to your room. The problem with that is they only had 5 or 6 ppl organzing this and our plane had over 250 passengers so it was a lengthly process. If they could have had more ppl it would have gone over better as ppl were annoyed with the wait as it was warm. Nonetheless it was a great idea....
When we arrived at the hotel is was after 8:30 and the hotel was more beautiful than we thought. The foyer was big and bright and full of marble it was really one of the nicest hotels we've been to. We got into our rooms which are Junior Suites - that's standard for this hotel and they were the biggest we had seen by far. We are travellers that go away at least twice per year and could not believe the size of the rooms including the bathroom. They had everything in there from robes, bubble bath, combs, shampoo and soap containers in the shower and they even had shoe polish!!!! The grounds around the hotel were kept beautifully and we had a Lizard who visited almost everyday that we fed pineapple to.....the kid's were quite excited. The groundskeepers work very hard and all day long to keep it as beautiful as it is and let me tell you they do a wonderful job. The main dining room had a good selection of breakfast from sausage, bacon, cereals, pancakes, oatmeal, fresh fruit, cottage cheese and a person who made your own personal omlettes. The dining room was very clean and decorated nicely. You had the choice of eating your meal inside that was air conditioned or outside overlooking either the pool or the ocean. Both were good. There were 2 a la carts that seemed to be booked up in advance. We managed to book them both after day 3 we were there but when we had dinner it didn't look like it was fully booked at all so we don't know if they limit the numbers of ppl in there or what. The Carioca we recommend as the food was better. When we arrived at the hotel we knew there was a water slide for the kid's to play in and with 4 boys they would have endless fun. We were disappointed to find out the slide was down and would be down for an additional 11 weeks due to repairs. This was not mentioned to us prior to booking so if you are going because of the water slide I hope you read this review in advance as it is closed down. The pools for the children consist of a wading pool for young children and another beside the adult pool. There was a Spanish festival that weekend so the kid's pools were loaded with children and that wasn't good. In my opinion that was not the best time for us to go to Manzanillo because it was the festival which meant the majority of ppl at the resort were Spanish speaking. It did not have a good mix of ppl ie Americans, Canadians, Europeans, French etc and that was disappointing. They had an adult pool for over 18 years and it seemed to be that way. They also had an adult Jacuzzi which seemed to be the same. The beach was disappointing as they have very little frontage but we knew that prior to going. Daily activities do not exist there....they have one girl walking around asking if you want to play volleyball but that's it. I would recommend the hotel hire an Animation Crew to pick the activities up during the day as it got a little boring. They had a kiddie club but not for my boys ages so again they were a little bored but we went into town and shopped at WalMart and that was ok. All 6 of us took the local transit and it cost $1 US dollar. In terms of outings we did the Deep Sea Fishing that cost us $300 and 3 out of 6 got severly boat sick. Over the course of 3 hours we caught 4 tuna and that was the beginning of the journey but we saw lot's of sea creatures like sea turtles and sting rays so it was ok. I highly recommend going on the snorkeling excursion as the guides literally dove down and came up with a blowfish and other sea creatures for us to see. The water is dark and not very clear but our guides made it fun. All in all we enjoyed the vacation but with the lack of entertainment during the day and the food being ok the time there could have been reduced to 4 days instead of 7. For those of you thinking about going it's not a lively spot for partiers it's more of a resort for persons with children or couples who want quiet time. I recommend this spot however read the reviews first so that you are not disappointed. We are glad we went but we won't not return.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Karmina Palace. The hotel itself was excellent and we found the staff very friendly and helpful. We arrived early evening on the Friday and our first dinner was the Mexican Fiesta and had we realized it was the most authentic night of food and entertainment, we would have paid more attention to the music, costumes, food and dancing - and brought our camera. The food the rest of our stay (7 days) was pretty good and we really enjoyed the a la carte meals, especially at the Carioca, situated out on the point with the ocean crashing below. The grounds were very well kept with beautiful gardens. The only downside was we were there the week before Easter and as this was a major holiday for Mexicans, it got quite crowded as the week progressed and it was hard to find a chair at the adult pools. We did miss having a long beach to walk on and the one next door was hard to walk on with a strong undertow. We had an ocean suite on the 5th floor and the view from our balcony was fabulous. The rooms were very clean and well stocked. We would highly recommend the Karmina Palace, particularly to families.

This hotel is a "great deal" for the price provided you paid less than $1050 including taxes: We travelled with another couple, my daughter and her boyfriend (the one & only Brian!!)

Hotel/Room: We rate it a 4.5 . . gorgeous rooms (800+ sq feet) and beautiful lobby. Very very clean . . were very pleased.

Food: We rate the food/presentation 7.5 . . . great selection, varied and delicious. Always somethings for even the pickiest of eaters. Im not a seafood/fish eater . . but always a chicken, beef, steak, pork, pasta and Mexican fare available. Not sure why folks would say it's repetitive . . not sure what else could be offered. We were very pleased with the food.

Beach/Ocean: We rate it a 1-2. Being "pool people", the beach did not make or break our holiday. However, we do like to walk along beaches. There is no beach to speak of in front of the hotel, although there were plenty of people enjoying what little beach there was (beds and lots of beach chairs available). HOWEVER, if you venture off the property towards the Walmart (along the beach) . you quickly realize why the ocean is not the typical blue/green Caribean colour we expect. The water along the beach was grossly polluted . . lots of jelly fish . . and smell was foul. REASON: Manzanillo is a shipping port and you will see plenty of ships coming and going . . which adds to the pollutants. (Green foamy, brown stuff was being washed up . . reminds us of Lake Ontario at its worse). We did not even step foot in the water . . was really bad! Undertows could be potentially quite dangerous . .

However, take a $5 cab ride into the town/Market area . . similar to Wasaga Beach (public) . . beach much cleaner and water seemed swimmable . . but not for us after what we'd seen (above).

Hotel location: We rate it a 4 . . beautiful setting . . in the mountains .. very very scenic. Grounds beautifully manicured. Nicely situated, close to stores, shopping, restaurants.

Facilities/Activities: We rate it a "1". There is a definite "disconnect" between the hotel and the Canadian tourists. No music around the pools, no Social Director encouraging folks to take part in any activities. Nightly shows were extremely "amateur & boring". Nothing to do after the shows but sit in the hotel lobby for social time & and hope you can stay awake long enough to go to the disco which opened at 11pm. No after hours grills if youre hungry . . nothing. Too much time between show & disco opening (approx 1 1/5 hours). Thus the disco was empty . .

NEGATIVES:
Kids pool was closed (a lot of people were very angry)
Catamarang boat trip was not available
No Kayaks as mentioned
Captain was sick so no boat cruise available
ZipLine was not available due cable snapping seriously injuring an older gentleman from Calgary who had to be airlifted back home.
Prices of organized trips varied dependant on who you spoke to.
A la Carte restaurant reservations were a joke . . inconsistant rules for bookings were frustrating. Concierge desk said computer was down . . but not so for some guests . .
Washcloths in rooms were scarce. A number of folks commented on the frequency of having to request them.
Even though we tipped the maid upon arrival . . no special service was offered . . in fact things worsened . . bathrobe was missing two days which I quickly got replaced otherwise we would have been charged . . facecloths and bath towels were not consistent.
Adult Pool . . there are signs clearly indicating "family pools and adult only pools" both in Spanish and English. People were totally disregarding/disrespecting the Adult Only signs and allowing their children to swim in these areas. After some complaining and one fella promising to take his group of 12 to another hotel and demanding a credit" did the Security finally take the rule seriously! Why have an Adult Only sign posted then? I couldn't believe it when I was told "Kids Rule the World" . .

By the 2nd day . . the pool situation greatly improved!
Pools were lovely and WARM! . . not sure why people would want them heated . . . by 3pm pools were not as refreshing.

Overall, a very relaxing holiday . . met some wonderful people (especially the Windsor group)!

This is definitely not a "budget" hotel . . and if you can get this reasonably priced . . "go for it"! Ages are diverse . .

But if you love the ocean, beaches, if nightly entertainment is important . . this is "definitely" not the place for you.
