Reviewed 2 November 2010

My spouse and I stayed at the Karmina Palace the last week of October. We had a junior suite, which overlooked the pools and had a partial ocean view. The room was very nice and spacious, but it did have a musty smell. The hot water was hot enough to scold if you weren’t careful. I asked about upgrading to a nicer room when we checked in and were informed that it would cost an additional $200 per day. We quickly forgot that idea. We purchased the internet access for our room for a cost of $72 a week. You can get free internet in the lobby as well. The cost of a taxi from the airport to the hotel is either $37 US or 370 peso and they have a taxi stand right in the lobby of the airport.

The resort is really beautiful and easy to get around. The waiters/waitresses were around the pools and beach every few minutes asking if you wanted something to drink. In fact, all the waiters and waitresses were fantastic at all the restaurants as well. I couldn’t have asked for more friendly or helpful waiters and waitresses. This was the best service we have ever had at any resort.

We ate at all 3 specialty restaurants and they were all nice. My wife, who appreciates fine food more than I, loved the food at all the restaurants, especially the Italian.

We used the workout room every day. It had a lot of different machines and weights.

We could not snorkel at the hotel beach the entire week since the water was not clear at all. The only tour we took was the snorkel tour, which we had to wait 3 days to take since they required a minimum of four people. The snorkeling was alright, but not as nearly as good as on the Mayan Riviera coast.

We took the local bus into Manzanillo and back to the hotel. It cost only 6 or 8 pesos each. The best shopping was on Mexico Street across from the big sailfish statue downtown. We also walked from the resort to Walmart and Comercial Mexicana. Both of which were about a 15 minute walk.

They had a big conference going on there for several days, and the resort seemed filled every day. 99% of the guests were from Mexico, which made for some quality time for my wife and I to talk with each other since neither of us speak much Spanish. In fact, we only met 2 other English speaking couples the entire week. If we go again, it would be in the January – March timeframe when we were told that the place is loaded with English speaking guests.

Overall, a lovely resort, great food, friendly people, and a great value for the price we paid for the trip.

This was my first trip to Mexico and after the experience I am on my way back again. It was a package deal for 7 nights over Christmas. A little pricing but for the time of year not to bad. The overall experience was beyond expectations. The hotel property itself is above average and clean. The all inclusive resort provided great food and drinks that were not watered down as I was told they would be. The resort is quite nice and is situated close to the town of Manzanillo which is a rough seaport town with a mixture of old Mexico with a Wal-Mart, Starbucks and JFK thrown. The Barcello property is next to a more upscale Las Hadas which is famous for the 80's film starring Bo Derek, as "10". I made the trip over there for a fishing trip and realized this would be the place to stay next time I traveled to this part of the world. The resort has everything you need to keep you busy day and night but there is also plenty of great food, activities and night life in the city, outside the gates. If you dare to venture out that is. The local golf course is challenging but a bit over priced compared to local tracks I play on. Minus the weather and palm trees, the course was nothing special. The property and town definitely had a Mexican feel to it and did not feel influenced by corporate America. I met some great people - all Canadians, and had a great time.

We just rebooked our trip to Barcelo Manzanillo, Mexico - this year for 2 weeks. We travel every winter - its our only way to enjoy winter (in Canada). We have a 7 year old daughter and we did not hesitate to return this year.

Rooms and View (we had mountain view last year) and we would happily stay in that room again (7th Floor). The were "suite" rooms, big enough for all 3 of us to have plenty of space to MOVE IN. There's free internet in the lobby - so putting your iphone to FLIGHT mode and turning on the wifi - you were able to check the weather back at home. We actually had 1.5 days of rain for the week of Feb 1 to 9 last year - it did not spoil our vacation because when it got hot, it was perfect, nothing a few drinks and a great book to fix. We are still not fully beach people - but enjoyed a dip in their little manmade cove and the walk to the north - volcanic black sand!

We loved the food and momossa's every morning. We enjoyed a great mix of buffet and a la carte restaurants. We did miss having brand named cognac or after dinner drinks included, if we wanted a glass - it was $5.

Entertainment for adults and kids was nice - nothing to fully entertain but we did that ourselves with the people we met and with our family. The kids club was not very busy and we found that after 2 days of a few hours - our daughter met a few children her age and she was able to fully enjoy a break or two from the sun to watch a movie or do some crafts, she spent most of the time in one of their fabulous pools.

We loved the feel of the hotel - almost a "South of France" - with villa's and hotels built into the hillsides!

WE are going again this year for 2 weeks - a bit earlier (Jan 19) and don't anticipate any surprizes!

Amazing resort, amazing people, fun, relaxing, great food, excellent staff, beautiful resort, excellent tour staff (Mago!) well worth the money . . . and even the rates were exceptional! We loved it so much in February 2010 that we are returning in February 2011 with our adult children. So much for your money and I would recommend to anyone, anytime.

My family & I have been going to this resort for 9 years now. We thought about trying a different spot, but why mess with perfection. We know exactly what we are getting when we go to Karmina; paradise. We don't want to chance trying a new spot only to be disappointed for 2 weeks. It is a worry free, spectacular vacation that keeps the entire family happy. Our kids are 14, 12 and 10 now and throughout all the years, they've never been bored at Karmina. And the nice thing is, we can snooze by the pool and not worry about their safety or what they are doing as it is all very well supervised and secure property.

We stayed here for 6 nights in August and unfortunately it rained alot. The only problem with that is that two of their signature restaurants cannot be used if it's raining too hard so you get transferred into a ballroom which has no atmosphere. Sitting over the cliffs in their main restaurant (great traditional Mexican) is really spectacular. Overall this all-inclusive has great food with many choices, always replenished, and always fresh, but don't expect them to know anything about wine. It was our first time at an all-inclusive and we were impressed with the quality and value. We chose this location for family reasons, but were happy with the spot. It has a small beach, but many patios overlooking the beach which we chose because we're not sand lovers. This was the last week of Mexican school vacation so there were a lot of families with three or four generations and the pools were overloaded with kids. Although it was good to be with locals, we did need a break after about the 4th or 5th day and checked out to the Wyndham Grand Bay about 45 minutes north of there for a much higher caliber of luxury. Be sure to take the top level Club plan so you get top priority for restaurant seatings and a special lounge just for you. It really is necessary, or you will feel like a second class citizen. We had a room with a balcony and an ocean view which was spacious with a pullout sofabed, but the king bed was too hard. They provided a foam pad, but it didn't help. Be careful with footware when it rains as the tile floors are very slippery throughout the resort. Golf next door (which is really right in front of this resort) at Las Hadas (which is a really tired grand dame resort) was good when it wasn't flooded. All in all for the money we spent it was a terrific value.

Staff was disrespectful and the so called "all inclusive" treatment was unsatisfactory. I will never stay at a Barcelo resort again. By far the worst all inclusive experience. Hotel staff actually categorized us by saying "you Canadians give us trouble." VERY disappointing. I wish I stayed at another resort and would never recommend this place to anybody. Customer service is important and I didn't find the staff here very willing to please their guests.
