“THEY STEAL FROM YOUR ROOM.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

I know what you think- you read one bad review and you think "that won't happen to me." well it just may at this resort. I had my $400.00 prescription glasses stolen FROM MY BAG in my room. This meant the maid went through my bag and took them- not like they were out in the open. When I complained they shrugged their shoulders.

The day I got home- like many writers are saying, I got TERRIBLE food poisoning.

The place is JAMMED with Mexican Locals, so if you want a relaxing vacation- I'd advise you to stay away.

The beach isn't even really nice. Cancun has much better sand and BLUE water. Go there.

This is our 6th stay at a Riu and by far the worst. I do have to say our room was clean and the bell man was very helpful. The rest of the staff just acted like we are bothering them. Food was horrible and they did not offer Top shelf liquor. The locals called it their upscale Best Western.
Will not return!

After review the options to have a long weekend in Mazatlan, the Riu looked a nice but little expensive place to be. As I stayed in 2 different hotels of the brand before, I did guess It was worth the shot: WRONG!.

It is a GREAT place, no doubt on it, the food and beverages are top quality, the rooms are nice and comfortable, BUT:

1. CROWDED (AND STINKY) LIKE A MARKET IN CALCUTA.
2. THE HALLWAYS AND LOBBIES ARE ALWAYS DIRTY (guess this is more a problem with some guests with absolute disrespect for any other persons, but the experience is disgusting).
3. WAITING MORE THAN 15 MINUTES TO GET THE (ANY OF THREE) ELEVATOR AT THE FLOOR!!!
4. SOME VANDALIZED ELEVATORS (again, the same reason at the point number 2).
5. Far away from downtown.
6. Some personnel, was not in the willing to help, some sarcastic comments and some showing the overstress of an almost out-of-control situation with too many people around.
7. In a Jr. Suite with a 32" LCD-TV 18 ft. away from the bed is or of the wrong size, or at the wrong spot to place it.
8. No desk at the room
9. NO FREE WIFI.
10.The staff were a complete disaster at the check-out time (I could count about 1,500 guests and their luggages at the lobby trying to do this at the same time), letting aside the fact that 11AM seems to me too early for this.

I will think it twice before get back there.

Just got home last night. This was our third RIU experience. Overall we had a nice stay. Our room was clean and the staff was pleasant. We had two unexpected surprises: 1) the buffet was not the best, same food every day regardless of the nightly "theme". The salad bar items tasted like chemicals, probably due to their purification process and 2) the hotel guests consisted mostly of local tourists. Buses of locals arrived and departed daily. Although these folks were nice and very family oriented, it was rare to meet an American. Our impression by the time we left was that the hotel was catering to the locals. We heard that they got quite a discount compared to the price we paid. This hotel was the least expensive RIU in Mexico. With that in mind it was an OK value.

We vacationed at the Riu from Apr. 25 to May 9 for 2 weeks. Last year we only went for 1 week and found it was not enough!! Last year was our first adventure and did we ever pick a Gem of a place. The Hotel is beautiful and the surrounding is amazing. Everything is CLEAN! Food is excellent! Service is great including items to be fixed in your room (toilet wouldn't flush). They work hard and very few people tipped. (?)! Amazing weather, endless drinks, entertainment shows were very good, I laughed so hard on the Couples Night that I hurt my stomache muscles!! Yes, there are other vacationers there!! Go earlier for you breakfast, book your evening meals, if you don't like the sound of children having fun, go to an adult resort and by all means use the stairs as we did from the 4th flr!! STAFF IS WONDERFUL!! There is nothing like returning to your room & finding a beautiful towel art animal on your bed to make you feel special and appreciated as a guest! WE LOVE YOU RIU! THANK YOU!!

Room Tip: If you don't like waiting for the elevator, I suggest asking for something up to the 5th. flr. O...

I had looked up deals for this resort several times over the last few years but always put it off. This time we made a impulsive decision and it turned out way better than we expected. We have travelled to Mexico before to Riviera Maya and done several other trips to DR, Cuba, Jamaica etc.
The food at the resort was good, pools clean, rooms very clean. the lobby was cleaned all the time. the buffet was good, alacarte's were better especially the italian and the mexican. The staff were very friendly and took great pain to satisfy you at the buffet and alacarte restaurants.
The location of the resort is good as well close proximity to the city. you can hop on a bus to go to the golden zone or the old city for $8-11 peso's or you can take a cab (open air golf carts are really cool) for $100-$140 pesos. both are very safe we travelled by both. we visited the Senor Frogs store in the Golden Zone.
The culture of Mazatlan is different to the culture in Cancun. The people have less Spanish influence and more Aztek and so its apparent in their food and way of life. Down the beach to the righ is a wonderful restaurant Mr' Lionso's if you can you should try it out. they have good food especially the grilled food in the Aztek stone dish/bowl.
We did the stone island tour very reasonable not sure if i would want to recommend it though, it was definately good for the price. we tried it thinking the beach water would be a bit calmer but it wasnt really any how they served good food there, two activities were included (banana boat was awesome).
Most people complain about the locals using the resort. we didnt find any major issues as such. the resort does become a bit busier on the weekends and so to escape the rush if required you can schedule your day out to the city or any tours on the weekend. One con that i would have to point out is that there is no supervision at the pool area at all at least when we were there. there should be as on the weekend there were some locals acting abit roudy, diving from the edges when they are not supposed to, jumping into the pool right next to you etc so we just moved to a different pool and it worked for us but some of the other guests were getting a bit annoyed.
The service at all areas we found to be excellent i have no complaints about that at all. Front desk, maids, entertainment staff all were very friendly and helpful. A bit thank you to Alejandro at the bufet, he always stopped to chat with my son - very friendly.
Rooms are all ocean view, the view is just beautiful, we saw dolphins from the balcony on many occasions. sunsets are wonderful. we would grab a coffee on our way up the room and sit in the balcony and watch the sunset - just awesome!
The beach is our only negative, because its open water its very different compared to swimming at the beaches in Riviera Maya or Cancun, here the water is rough and can have an under tow. but that said my kids had a blast trying to surf using the free boogie boards courtesy of the hotel. All in all it was our fault we didnt consider the water / beach when we booked we noticed it after. It was still fun.
If we every go back to Mazatlan we will surely stay at the Riu.

Room Tip: I believe all rooms are ocean view. we chose the 8th floor as in case the elevators are full or busy...

We went in April for seven days. Asian restaurant was the best food. Pool bar was great. Ask for premium. Do not purchase a Booze Cruise on the beach. Do it in the hotel. We did not get what we asked for and the boat was 200 years old lol. Skip the beach deal and know what your getting by booking inside the hotel with the agent :)
Elevators took forever so we usually took the stairs. Highly recommend this resort!!
