“Lovely Hotel”
Reviewed 6 April 2010

This Hotel is lovely. If you are traveling to Mazatlan and want a beautiful and restful location, this is an excellent choice. The so-called "Gold Zone" is a nightmare of traffic and noise. This Hotel, on a quiet beach north of the Marina, is a much nicer choice away from the crowds and the noise.

We should have taken a picture because you would have to see this to believe it! Right on the beach and a lovely location North of the Golden Zone, this hotel was built with virtually no balconies. All rooms face the beach and the open air lobby is attractive. Desk personnel are attentive, small sushi bar and pretty pool. All was looking well and then we got to the room.

Imagine a red, bright pink, and white interior with sleazy drapes at the entrance and again between the bed and a huge white jacuzzi tub at the ocean end of the room, lit by blue and green floodlights. Add mirrors, black lacquered furniture and a bathroom with ultra-modern fixtures that make it impossible to fit a toothbrush between the faucet and pedestal bowl sink. Water just runs down the side of the clear bowl.
The only way to see the ocean was from the tub so we gave it a try, turning on the hot water faucet to fill. The bell-person had said it takes a few minutes for hot water. Thirty minutes later, no hot water for the tub. There are many fine hotels in Mazatlan, we'd recommend find one and skip this experience.

I booked 4 nights at the Crowne Plaza Mazatlan for New Year's. Even before deciding to book, I already knew that hotels would be busy, and was somewhat ready for that. Little did I know what I had in store.

Check in: We checked in at 3:00. The room was not ready. Finally, 30 minutes later, the room was "ready." Upon entering, housekeeping was still making the bed. After she left, upon inspection, there were no towels, nor was the toilet bowl clean. Fresh towels were not available until 6:00 p.m., as they had "run out!"

Pool: We didn't realize that you needed to "run and reserve" a chair and umbrella at 7:00 a.m.. We arrived at the pool at 9:00 a.m., and there were no chairs available as people had already "reserved" them. I spoke to the grounds man, and he explained that they didn't have enough chairs, nor umbrellas. Moreover, they had run out of beach towels!?!?

Housekeeping: Out of the 4 nights, our bed was prepared for the evening only twice. Upon asking a manager, he quickly informed me that evening bed service should have happened nightly!?!? On Day 3, our bathroom was not cleaned - instead, we found wet, soiled towels left in the shower.

Decor: The decor of the hotel is supposed to be "boutique." At first, the concept was appealing. But upon careful investigation, you can tell that the hotel did not fully invest for the execution. There were water stains all over the wall. The dryer was not fixed to the wall, and consequently fell off when we tried to use it. The drawer handles were coming off the drawers! This is quite sad, considering this hotel is less that a year old.

Management: When I asked to speak to a general manager (starting on Day 1), I was constantly brushed away on a daily basis. Finally on Day 5, I spoke to a Sales Manager and expressed my concerns over the establishment. It seemed as if they were hoping that I would eventually give up, and not ask for the general manager.

I understand that things happen. But for whatever reason, I seem to have been the lucky recipient of everything going wrong. The customer service was lacking, and quite inconsistent. It is important to take note that this is an "independently owned" hotel, that uses the Crowne Plaza name.

It is quite a shame, since Crowne Plaza has a good reputation. But unfortunately, this establishment tarnishes the name. I strongly recommending investing your money into another institution.

The hotel is still being finished, but the staff is very courtious and friendly. The marina area is still being developed so there is construction noises during the day. The ocean view is breathtaking and the pool is quiet. That will change as bookings increase, I'm sure. Transportation using the cabs is very convenient. I preffered the buses. For about 80 cents CAD you could go to the central market, the gold zone, the commercial Marina, the Mega store etc. This is a great relaxing zone of Mazatlan. For partiers you would rather be in the gold zone. Not a lot of restauants in this area yet. Again only 80 cents gets you to abundant food eateries. The room I was in had a kitchenette. I ate in the room a fair bit as I travelled alone. To relax in the evening the room has 2- 32" sony bravia tv's with satellite feed. When this hotel is completed I beleive it will be the hotel to stay at for the relaxing visit to the pearl of the pacific.

I visited Crowne Plaza with my husband in March 2009, just two months after the hotel had opened, but we had a pleasant stay anyway. Hotel was a little bit unfinished at the time, but the service was very good, friendly and efficient. One thing that bothered us a little was the construction work just beside the hotel. There are quite a lot of construction works around the area anyway, and the noise is quite loud at daytime. But we spent our days mostly in the tourist centre, so it wasn't a big thing for us after all.

Location is perfect for relaxing vacation (after the construction work around the hotel is over), honeymooners, elder couples etc. About 7 km from Mazatlan tourist centre, with good connections with local bus and pulmonia taxes (almost like tuk-tuks in Thailand).

Rooms are average sized, bright and clean, every room has a seaview. Six pillows in every bed!

Hotel has one restaurant, which also serves breakfast. Nice pool area with direct view/access to the beach and Pacific ocean. Also lobby area is spacious and nice, with a view to the sea.
