This property is primarily timeshare oriented but they do offer normal nightly rates and accomodations. We stayed here three weeks and in three different units including a Junior Suite (large unit in their newer tower with a kitchen, dining area and semi-isolated bedroom area; large balcony with ocean view); a 1 bedroom in their Inca Tower (2 double beds, 2 baths, full kitchen, dining and great patio-no TV in the bedroom-ocean view) and a "studio" (basic hotel room with small old refrigerator and coffee maker, desk, nice patio. The studio unit, while adequate, was nothing to write home about and needed some refurbishing, upgrading and maintenance. The other rooms were most acceptable and quite spacious (altho maintenance was not perfect particularly in the kitchens). Check in was uneventful and all employees were extremely gracious and service oriented. We moved weekly as we own timeshares and are members of RCI so we were using trades and weeks rented from owners. During these transitions, the front desk was very helpful with information and with special requests. My suggestion toward executing any needed special requests or accomodations prior to arrival however, would be to definitely make arrangements directly with this Inn location and NOT the corporate Salt Lake City offices of Holiday Management. (The attitudes, attention to detail and follow-thru was obviously much better!).
The Inn is definitely NOT remote but, we think it has an excellent location nearby many other beach resorts, restaurants, shops, grocery, banks etc. Bus lines run by the Inn and for a few cents you can get to nearly any part of the city. The pools, grounds and flowers are impeccably maintained and truly outstanding resulting in a certain charm about the place that is almost magic and obviously under the direction and care of expert groundskeepers. The front desk and bellman staff are outstanding albeit the security staff always seemed to be a bit overzealous.
The restaurant and food is very good but a bit on the pricey side with the menu kind of outdated and on the boring side. The service was kinda hit and miss (i.e. during one meal, you might be served by 3 to 5 different wait-staff members-but NOT the same one twice! It was just like magic they seemed to dissapear.) Never once were we approached by a management/host/hostess person asking about our satisfaction. Drinks were overpriced considering the other places we visited. I guess to compensate they offer almost non-stop "happy hours" most of the day for "national" drinks. Be careful to ask the price when "calling' a brand or wine!!
Organized recreational activities are scheduled daily and posted on a board by the towel station but frequently do not happen for whatever reason. Daily water aerobics were fun and Spanish classes were good. Organized tours can be arranged through a desk in the lobby. The Wednesday night Fiesta meal and show was good.
The controversy alluded to earlier in a post about the run-down adjoining property has been long resolved and it is now a beautiful Best Western Inn. We checked out there rooms and were tempted to move there from our week in the marginal studio but didn't want the hassle of trying to get refunds etc. Besides that, we had become quite attached to some of the staff at the Inn and enjoyed the ambiance and conveniences. Staying there might be a better option for a few nights if your scheduled week at the Inn did not coincide with your travel schedule and to avoid the older studio/hotel rooms at the Inn.
A US-educated physician is at the property with a office and a full time nurse which proved to be a real plus for us. A spa is also located on premises. Wi-Fi is available to a degree (signals vary greatly) but at very inflated price ($7 per day!! ---but go to Rico's coffee house across the street, enjoy an excellent cup and get it FREE!). Local phone calls were about 45 cents US but ask for an "800" operator and you get a whopping $2.50 charge whether they answer or not. No other unusual charges were appeared on our bill. The Exercise room left a bit to be desired with most of the equipment older and poorly maintained...and the TV did not work.
Safes are provided in most rooms and if they are not, a free safety-deposit box is available at the front desk. Cable TV was available in the rooms but were primarily in Espanol other than the boring Fox and CNN International Headline news channels. A nightly movie is featured on the Inn/s TV channel and there were several other movie channels.
The facility is fairly handicap friendly although NOT completely with two of the floors in the older Hotel section requiring stairs.
Transportation TO the Inn from the Airport can be arranged prior to arrival for a small cost and via a very nice AC bus with the agent awaiting you after you emerge from customs -holding a sign). The same service was NOT available for the return to the airport and the taxi cost about $20US if I remember correctly.
The Inn at Mazatlan is actually a great place to stay despite all the above with most guests seemingly returning annually... and they are always ready to offer suggestions about Mazatlan and places to eat etc.. If the Inn's management company/owners were as enthusiastic about maintenance, refurbishing and providing value as the employees are about service and guest satisfaction, this COULD BE an absolutely OUTSTANDING & EXCELLENT property! Even though, we certainly enjoyed our stay.
