“If you hate all inclusives”

If you are a fit and adventurous traveller that wants to avoid the cattle trough at the all inclusive then this is a good place to stay. We stayed for 11 days just at the end of The Festival of the Virgin of Guadalupe and enjoyed the parades and vitality of the city. Granted it did make the sleeping a little tougher but a 5 minute walk puts you right into the middle of old Puerto Vallarta. They serve the best Lime Margaritas on the roof that I have ever had and we watched the sunset there 6 of the nights. Chez Elana, the restaurant provided excellent food the two nights that we ate there but being the adventerous type we ate at probably 30 different places and all were fine. The worst meal was the most expensive and it was on the beach. We met five new friends over breakfast and enjoyed talking with Gloria, the owner. We will definitly be back. The location is definitely not for people with with health issues as there is about a 300 foot elevation gain from sea level unless you taxi it. Clean, and with a very friendly staff.

My husband and I have just returned from our two week vacation to Puerto Vallarta. We stayed at an all inclusive resort in Bucerias, but for Christmas this year I gave my husband the gift of an overnight stay in downtown PV so we could experience the nightlife there.

I chose Los Cuatro Vientos (Four Winds) at random after viewing their website. We love ‘old Mexico’ and this hotel delivers just that. It’s simply charming, as is its host and owner, Gloria. We had a small, simple room on the 3rd floor overlooking the dipping pool. One flight up is the rooftop terrace, which view I found as stunning in the morning as at sunset. We met some of the other hotel guests and had a great chat over drinks, (terrific margaritas!) and watched the sunset before heading out for our night on the town. We also enjoyed a light breakfast with our fellow hotel guests in the morning.

Puerto Vallarta is built on the side of a mountain, so expect to climb, climb, climb. We walked everywhere during the day but in the evening we wimped out and took a very inexpensive taxi to the Malecon, a short five minute taxi ride. The hotel is close to everything you could want and the church bells added to the charm.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone with mobility issues, but it was perfect for us. Although it was a short visit, for one night only, we enjoyed our stay very much. Thank you Gloria, we look forward to seeing you again. We will return!

We had not been to Puerto Vallarta in 18 years, and the thing we remembered most fondly about our last trip was Los Quatros Veintos Inn. Immediately after getting off the plane we headed up into the beautiful hills to see if the place we'd been longing for still existed. To our complete delight, the Inn, the delicious Chez Elena restaurant, and the roof top bar with the most gorgeous view in the city were not only still there, but had not changed one bit. What a GEM! The rooms are basic but cozy, and the bar serves the finest margaritas in town! The restaurants' tortilla soup and bacon wrapped shrimp is off the charts delicious! This would be a perfect budget-friendly place to stay for a single traveller or a couple seeking a spot that is not fancy, yet intimate, romantic, and beautiful. The beach and shopping areas are a short walk or inexpensive cab ride away. The view, the food, and the hospitality of Gloria (the owner from San Diego), is beyond description. Don't miss this charming little gem!

We missed our flight at the airport in Puerto Vallarta and randomly picked a hotel from our guide book. We were SO DELIGHTED to find Los Cuatros Vientos. Such a charming little hotel. The proprietor, Gloria, (English speaking American) stayed late to greet us!! The food was exceptional at their restaurant "Chez Elena". Fine gourmet dishes with lovely presentation and Extremely reasonable prices. The rooftop terrace with the "El Nido" bar has the best view we saw on our whole trip to the Mexican coast. We were only there one night and a half day, but totally enjoyed our visit. Within a couple of minutes we could walk down to the Malecon and center of town.
We happened to be stranded at the airport during the busiest Mexican holiday week and were desperate to just find a room. We had called a couple of other hotels who either didn't have a room or gave us an exorbitant price. However, Gloria's price at Los Cuatros Vientos was very extremely reasonable.
The rooms are clean, charming and basic, everything else exceptional. Here you truly experience Puerto Vallarta's ambience.

I had my first stay at Los Cuatros Vientos last month -- and I am hooked. If you find the mega-resorts to be sterile, snooty and too removed from real Mexico, this is the place for you. Small, quaint and packed with character, Los Cuatro Vientos is a hidden jewel in old Vallarta. At first I was afraid to be without technology -- no phone, TV or A/C. But I soon realized that my soul craved a break from electric noise. Instead, I read a book on the rooftop terrace, plunged in the little swimming pool at the end of the day and actually enjoyed lugging my fat behind up and down all the stairs -- from the malecon to the top of the hill, from the street up to the main patio, from the patio to my third-floor room, from my room up to the roof...no, this place is not for the disabled or out-of-shape. But what you sacrifice in conveniences, you make up for in ambience and nostalgic simplicity. I didn't want to leave. For solo travelers, take heart. I spent a week there alone and never felt lonely. Gloria makes you feel like family and every night there was something fun to see...mariachis, a singer from NY, interesting people everwhere. The only real drawback was the noise from the disco on Friday night. Boom, boom, boom...but I didn't care. It was just what the doctor ordered. In fact, I'm going back this week...

My husband and I just returned from a 2 week trip to Mexico, mostly around the Puerto Vallarta area, where we had never been before. Our first stop was Los Cuatro Vientos hotel for three days. We were a day late arriving, due to an airline delay. On arrival were given a small room with two twin beds! I asked for a different room and we were given, for the same price, a very spacious room with a king sized bed one flight up from the courtyard. No problem at all.
It's true that if you have difficulty with stairs or walking up hills, this is not the place for you. It is located three steep blocks up from the beach. Also if you want luxury, this is not going to work for you. There is a bathroom, but no bathtub, and the water sometimes didn't work too well. That seems to be a pretty common issue in Mexico though.
We found it to be a very pleasant place, with friendly and helpful staff and an absolutely wonderful rooftop bar with the best view of the city and excellent margaritas! The price of the room includes a lovely breakfast in the courtyard every morning, with fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, eggs, pancakes, and coffee.
The owner, Gloria, is a very nice and helpful woman who know the city well.
We would stay there again. It was a very relaxing and quiet place to spend a few days.

While staying at the Los Cuatro Vientos hotel in October, we dined at its restaurant, Chez Elena. The food there was excellent, enjoyable all the more so due to the delightful and intimate atmosphere of this semi-outdoor restaurant. While dining, the manager (also its owner) visited with us at our table and we were treated to a brief history of this unique establishment, as well as info on the surrounding area. We then enjoyed anafter-dinner cocktail at the rooftop bar where we could view the lights of the city and the boats in the bay. We would highly recommend this restaurant both for its great food as well as its pleasant atmosphere.
