Three other friends and I traveled to PV on June 2012, stayed there for three days and we were satisfied with the service we received. Staff was nice, our rooms were clean, beds comfortable enough, food was ok, we had open bar for the three days and all around there are restaurants, convenience stores, pharmacy... As for location we found it just fine, 10 min or so away from the pier.
All in all it was a good experience.

Old Town Puerto Vallarta is where you want to be ad The San Marino Hotel is in the middle of the Action. With the amazing new pier within meters of the hotel. We wanted an Ocean view so we decided to go with the Junior Suite, which was exactly as shown on their website. We got room 603, our room was very big with a King Size bed, the shower pressure was amazing which is always a bonus. The View was incredible with a huge balcony overlooking the pier, the malacon and the beach. We got late afternoon sun from about 4pm until sunset which in April is about 8:15pm or so, so we got to see every sunset, it was so romantic. He spent late afternoons on our balcony because it was very private and the sun was hot. We checked in on April 8th which is a Monday, the first half of the week was quiet, hardly anyone around but by Thursday all the local people and their families came to the hotel. They were very nice but at lunch or dinner the restaurants filled very quickly. We opted in for the all inclusive deal which was an additional $300 , the food was okay, breakfast was good, fresh omlets, toast and lots of other dishes we weren't too sure what they were so we didnt try them. There was always rice and vegetables and at lunch the French Fries were really good, i know not very mexican but still really great. The drinks , no complaints, you cant really mix a bad margarita or pour a bad rum & coke. The hotel staff was more than accommodating, very nice people, very friendly. Although at check in we had to rent a mini fridge for our room, it was $5.00 a day, but it was a Huge mini fridge and worked amazing. You also have to rent the lock for your safe, i think that was .60cents a day no big deal. The room had a flat screen TV with lots of channels and also lots of plug ins in the room. Very clean although i wouldn't trust the glasses in the bathroom, but we always bring our own travel mugs. There is an Adults Only pool located in front of the lunch buffet restaurant but there was lots of kids in the pool, and the pool bar was only open on weekends, we had to go into the restaurant for drinks, which was no big deal. The hotel also has lots of palapas on the beach which i loved, because it nice to be close to the action, meaning VENDORS, they rocked, lots of stuff to buy, and being off season prices were way cheaper. The area around the hotel was great. OXXO Connivence store directly across the street. Lots of Liquor stores on the main strip in Old Town but i would suggest margaritas at Andales, amazing with great night life . . . . In closing I give The San Marino 2 thumbs up !!!

Room Tip: Spend the Extra and get Ocean View ask for 6th floor or higher

This was the first time we stayed in Downtown Puerto Vallarta instead of a resort in the hotel zone. The location is fantastic. Lots of places in old town you can go explore and eat. We did the all inclusive and for the price we paid it was sufficient.
We got our room and were immediately disappointed. The colors they choose are not really upscale like we were used to. The room has old furnishings and the bathroom shows it's age. The even have keys instead of room cards. The first night was the most uncomfortable sleep ever. The beds are hard as a rock. The next day we asked for foam toppers which made sleeping the rest of the week more bearable.
There is no coffee maker in the room, you have to pay to use the safe. The basic bathroom has a shower with plenty of hot water. They give you no shampoo so bring your own. For a 2 star resort they have very soft toilet paper. LOL.
There is a 19 inch tube TV with a few English channels. A nice small balcony facing the street. We thought it was more interesting to people watch than have an ocean view anyhow. The ocean view rooms have a small flat screen TV but I think the same hard beds.
The layout of the room is strange. The door to the bathroom is right next to the bed so there is maybe a foot and a half room to walk to the bathroom door. We would put the beds closer so we could have room to walk and everyday the bed would be pushed back. LOL. The hotel needs to get some pillow top beds, a flat screen TV and smaller nightstand to make the room work better. Or move the bathroom door to the hall.
The food in the restaurant is lukewarm at best. If you get there as soon as it opens the food is warmer. We found the temperature of the food improved during our stay. There is a very limited selection of food. There are six hot dishes and a few salads. If there is dessert grab it. There may be one or two out if any.
There is an adult pool and a couple smaller pools. The beach area is large and just steps away from the restaurant. Very compact resort so nice not to have to walk forever.
The location is excellent. There is an OXXO convenience store across the street. Many coffee shops and restaurants and the Malecon within walking distance. If you get sick of the food just go out and eat at the many cheap excellent restaurants all around.
Puerto Vallarta has lots of shopping. The locals love to haggle. Remember to counteroffer at least half of what they are asking or better yet hold off till you see all the shops in the market. The further down you go in the markets the cheaper the prices. You will be surprised at what they will accept from what they first asked.
There are many things to do in Puerto Vallarta. Take the bus or ride a cab. Remember to ask the price before getting in a cab. We went to the zoo and botanical gardens for a nice cheap excursion.
Staff and cleaning lady was good. The main areas were all freshly painted to impress the guests at the gala they were hosting.
I really hope they get new beds and spruce up the rooms a little. This is my new favorite place to stay in Puerto Vallarta because of the location. If you are used to 5 star resorts then this may be a little bit of a shock to stay here as it was for us at first but the place grew on us. For the price we paid we saved money to go out more and explore the real Puerto Vallarta.

We stayed here all-inclusive from March 15-29, 2013.
My partner and I stayed here 2 years ago and had a great time. Not so much this year. The waiters in the restaurant are great, but there aren't enough of them. They are really trying hard, but they can only do so much. As well, the meals were pretty much the same thing EVERY DAY for 2 weeks. Needless to say we ate a lot of our meals out in restaurants - which we might have done anyway - we prefer eating the street food over and being in the town to eating bland, Americanized versions of Mexican food - or at least what some tourists may think is Mexican food. On a positive note the food is MUCH improved over 2 years ago, but still nothing too special. If the food had been better we would have eaten more at the hotel and saved a bit of money.
Breakfast begins at 8am. Breakfast buffet was 90% the same thing every single day for 2 weeks. The first week there was coffee available by 7am(possibly earlier) every day. The second week nothing. Between lunch and dinner they would put out 2 buffet trays, one with fries and the other with some kind of meat right in the corner of the adult pool area so unless you looked directly in the corner you'd miss them. That was it for snacks or any "between meal" kind of foods, so if you were out shopping or whatever and got back to the hotel at 345 and hadn't eaten you could either eat fries or wait until 630 for dinner to begin.
Locals were repeatedly bringing their small children into the over 21 only pool area, sometimes would take a few hours for someone from the hotel to notice and direct them to the family pool area. Some of the guests would even inform the parents of the over 21 sign at the entrance to the pool. Some would leave and some would just say "de nada, de nada" and ignore them and stay. Adult only does not mean 5 or 6 year olds running around yelling and screaming and jumping in the pool. Toward the end of our stay was the beginning of Semana Santa and the over 21 sign dissapeared, so no more adult only pool area.
On the plus side, our first room had a view of another building across the street, we complained to our Sunwing rep and were given a different room on the 7th floor on the other side of the hotel with an amazing view of the hillside. That was a definite plus.
The second last day of our stay they finally put a second bartender on at the pool bar. There is a woman in an office in the lobby offering tours etc. Very obnoxious for the first week, she didn't bother us as much the second week.
We understand this is not a 5 star property and we don't expect it to be one(we have no interest in staying in a big fancy resort in the hotel zone), but for an all inclusive we expect more than what we got. 2 to 3 hours between meals with no decent snacks available. No food available between 930 or 10pm and 8am. Long lines at the pool bar. Constant activities at the family pool most of the day, very loud.
The staff here are very accomidating and very friendly and they are trying very hard to please the guests, but we probably will not stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor on the south side. We were on the 7th floor and had an amazing view of the hillside and part of the ocean, or pay a bit more and get a suite and have a waterfront balcony.

Well it isn't for the faint of heart. It's just ok. Upon entering the hotel the lobby looks quite nice and the grounds look nicely kept. If you're placed in the Old Tower that hasn't been renovated since it was built then you are in for a surprise. I would have rather stayed at a motel. We did complain and we were transferred to the slightly more updated rooms but they were not much to speak of. It was border line for my liking. It was almost deceiving how the main areas are all renovated but the rooms are YEARS behind. All-inclusive was basic but fine for the price paid. The food was never hot and was never fully stocked. The management cut back staff while we were there and it was way too busy for the waiters to keep up. If you are ok getting your own stuff then its not a problem but management needs to rethink things a little as things were not any less busy. The beds were hard as a rock and only half of the pool loungers had padding so it was terrible if you weren't able to scavenge a padded one early enough. I guess they didn't have a budget to bring comfort to the sunning guests.

If you are a 4 or 5 star traveler than this is not the place for you. Overall it was ok. Would I stay again....probably not.

Room Tip: Ask for a renovated room and request padding be added to the beds.
