“Beautiful Resort but BEWARE of Sand Fleas!”
Reviewed 5 May 2014

We stayed at the Barcelo from April 28th - May 3rd and had a great time (minus the unwanted souvenir of sand flea bites). The resort is beautiful in a secluded location outside of town. The staff is very friendly and always smiling. The rooms were spacious and well appointed. The food was really good at the restaurants and buffet. The bar selection was of premium quality. One point to note is the number of restaurant reservations you can make is based on your nights stay. We stayed 5 nights and were allowed 2 restaurant reservations.

Our family had a great time at this resort, however, I wish we stayed off the beach! The first morning we arrived, we took our son to the beach to play in the sand. An hour later, we were covered in red swollen bumps. The resort has bug spray for mosquitoes available, however, we didn't see a single mosquito. There was NO mention of the infestation of sand fleas on the beach. After speaking to some staff, we learned the sand fleas are mostly out in the morning and evening, however, we pretty much avoided the beach all together after this instance. One week later after our initial bites, we are still covered in swollen itchy bumps. This is not a nice memory after a great experience.

Additionally, we ran into an issue with a very rude front desk manager (I think his name was Valencia). Check out is at noon and our pick up wasn't until 2pm. When I asked for an extended check out, I was told no and then he proceeded to try to charge me 420$ per person to keep our wristbands for the extra 2 hours!!! In all the all inclusives I have stayed at in the past, it has always been a courtesy to keep your wristband after check out if you have a late check out. I understand not being able to accommodate a late check out request, however, the manager was completely disrespectful in the manner in which he handled the situation and I had to fight to keep our wristbands without a fee (by threatening to have a screaming baby in the lobby for the 2 hours instead since we would have no where else to go). Very disappointed with the end service!

All in all, it was a great vacation and we enjoy the luxury Barcelo resorts have to offer. If they took care of the sand fleas (or advised resort guests accordingly) and fire the front end manager, I would give it 5 stars! Enjoy your holiday as it flies by!

Room Tip: We stayed in building one which is closer to the night activities and music, so could be loud for so...

We stayed at the barcelo in March for a week.
Pros
The resort grounds are well kept, rooms surprisingly very nice spacious and clean.
Nice location with a "private beach" great if your looking for a relaxing quiet vacation.

Cons

Food was terrible. A lot of people got sick from the resort food.
We recommend venturing off the resort and trying a restaurant called Tony's hideaway near the zoo it is amazing and a defiance must. We ended up there for dinner 3 times in our 1 week stay it was so good.
A little ways away from pv but there is a bus that is easy to take to get to town.
Too quiet. In the evenings the bar closes at 1am and there is really no where to let loose and have fun. Unlike most resorts that have a "disco" all they had was a cantina directly under the rooms so there was no late night partying and it is very small.

All in all it was ok. If your looking for quiet and secluded it's probably the perfect resort for u but being a couple that like quiet days and lively nights it just wasn't for us and we will not be going back to this resort.

Made the trip to the Hotel Barceló in Puerto Vallarta in Mexico for a wedding for 2 weeks. There was a whole variety of us travelling from different places in the world and a diverse age range also. We all upgraded to the gold bands (VIP) before arriving to get the benefits of restaurant dining every evening and the premium lounge.

The location, rooms and pool areas are second to none. Lovely views and great standards here, especially with the house keeping.

We only really had issues with some of the service. For the first week, the hotel was mainly populated with Canadians and Americans. The service we had then was very good. We were allowed to book big tables at the restaurants without any issues. The quality of the food varied from night to night but still, couldn't complain.

On the commencement of the second week, we noticed a big influx of Mexicans on the resort. No problem with that, only when it came to trying to get a drink or book a table at a restaurant. Alcohol in the drinks suddenly went to basically nothing, even if you were at the bar first then Mexican's had priority, at numerous times I got bored waiting and just went to the premium lounge. On numerous occasions I was left sitting in the a la carte restaurant waiting to be served whilst watching lots of Mexican families sit down and receive instant service. The food in here however was very good for a quick bite to eat.

Also at the start of the 2nd week, we were also told we couldn't book in the restaurants anymore. As we had paid to go in them every night, we were a little put out by this, and only after speaking to numerous managers etc we were told we actually could book tables. Just no tables over 6 people. So, as there were many of us in our group, we decided to book different tables of 6. This wasn't an option either until we complained about it. On arriving at different restaurants, we were told at numerous times that we had missed our booking, despite having a ticket that proved otherwise. We were also booked into restaurants that were actually closed. After numerous more arguments, we often managed to get into these restaurants, only to see other groups with tables of 20+ which we were told we were 100% not allowed to do. We often sent food back also as at numerous times we were sent the wrong meals. Not a major issue though and we generally got what we asked for if we asked to change.

This review may sound overly bad, but apart from the service at times, we had a great holiday here. The facilities were great and if we found the right people, then the service was very good. Just be prepared to argue at times for what you're entitled to. We didn't let it spoil our holiday. Would like to give it a 3.5/5, however not an option so gone with 'Very Good'. If service was better it would be 5/5 all day every day.

Room Tip: Higher the floor, better the room. Upgrading does get you a better room.

Beautiful pools, simple rooms, varied activities. Beach is pleasant, and private, but I wouldn't swim in that water. Rooms are basic - all you need since you spend all the time at the pool. Pools are beautiful, warm and clean. Pool side chairs are not the best, but doable. Pool side bar service is attentive. The swim up bar is fun, but the bartenders at the lunch spot make much better drinks. The restaurants are convenient, but the food is average. I do recommend the resort. I also recommend getting the all inclusive, especially if you have kids. The 9th floor does not receive wi-fi very well, so you need to go to the lounge, which is a nice reprieve. The the public bus back to the town area is simple, cheap and right out the front door. The tours they have are limited and you would be better off to do your own homework and book on your own. We did go fishing and brought fish back to the resort for the dining restaurant to cook for dinner. They accommodated us and did it at no extra charge. We loved our stay and would recommend it and return!

Don't believe everything you read!! After staying at this resort with my husband & 2 teenage boys (13 & 16), I was very surprised by the negative comments I had read. A vacation is what you make it. If you go away with an attitude that everything must be perfect, you will always be disappointed no matter where you go. The other guests that we spoke to felt the same – they were shocked by the negative reviews & had nothing but good things to say about the Barcelo.

Sorry in advance for the long review but I feel that this hotel deserves more credit than some are giving it.

Check in: We arrived around 1:30 PM. We were met with drinks & a smile. Check in was very quick & we were upgraded to a family suite. We had full use of all of the facilities until our room was ready. We were told that it would be ready at 3:00. It wasn’t ready until 3:45 PM. We were pretty tired from a full day of travelling but it wasn’t a big deal & didn’t let something so petty ruin our trip.

Room: We were upgraded to a larger room with 2 king size beds, 2 bedrooms & 2 bathrooms. It was heaven! Bedrooms were huge – each with a TV. All rooms have a balcony with amazing views of the pools &/or ocean. We were in building #2, floor #4 - with a perfect view of the outdoor nightly entertainment below & the sunsets. We did notice that we didn't always get towels daily but if you asked, you received. The beds were very comfortable. The rooms were very quiet at night.

Hotel: Very clean & well kept with friendly staff. Beautiful grounds & surroundings. Ocean on one side & mountainous jungle on the other. Smaller hotel than most we’ve been to but it had a great layout & was easy to get around. Had a great selection of gift shops.

Food: Excellent, with great variety. The service was good & the staff were friendly. I especially liked the omelets that were made to order in the buffet. My husband loved the crepes. Plus they also had a daily theme in the buffet. Eg) Italian, Mexican, etc. We tried all 3 of the A La Carte Restaurants – the Spanish one was our favorite but all of them were good.

Nightly Entertainment: The theatre was quite big with tons of seating. The shows weren’t bad with a different one every night. There was also outdoor nightly entertainment regularly.

Activities: Our 2 boys found plenty to do. There was a list of scheduled activities by the pool. Archery, pool, ping pong, shuffle board, tennis, water polo, basketball, volleyball, etc. They even had Yoga & Aquasize. Special shout out to Lucy at the activity centre. She was great & was always there to help. She worked long hours & always had a smile on her face.

Spa: Was on the 2nd floor – overlooking the ocean. I had a pedi & a facial. Both were great.

Tipping: All of the staff work extremely hard to serve their guests for very little. The waiters in the buffet only make $5/day!! A couple of $$ to them goes a long way for them. You can tip in either pecos or US $$.

Transportation: The hotel is located about a ½ from Puerto Vallarta & 45 minutes from the airport. The red/white city buses stop right outside the hotel gate & across the street. Bus = 8 pecos/person (approx 50 cents US) vs a $20 cab ride – one way. We felt very safe on the buses & had no problems.

Excursions: Great variety! They had something for everyone. We did 2 different Ziplines through Sunwing – Canopy River & Vallarta Outdoor Adventures. Both were great. Staff were helpful & skilled & put your mind at ease with their quick wit. We also went on a City Tour of Puerto Vallarta. None of them included meals. Bring cash or credit card. We heard many excellent comments about Rhythms of the Night – a romantic dinner with a live show, on a secluded island that is all lite up with candles & lanterns – no electricity. Never went – maybe next time.

Beach: The beach was pretty but small. There was a pathway along side the ocean to go for a short walk. At the end, we were presented with a great view of the resort. The beach sand was very coarse. A hurricane came through about 8 years ago & took every grain of sand off the beaches. They trucked in river sand as a replacement. The ocean was very cold & the waves/undertow made it difficult to swim in. There are some vendors selling stuff on the beach but they were not aggressive & backed off politely if told “no”.

Pools: 2 nice sized pools (1 with a swim up bar) & 1 hot tub. The water was great – very warm. We had no problem getting drinks by the side of the pool. The waiters were always very accommodating. The pools were open late – up to 10 PM! Like any resort, the pool chairs were reserved early in the day but we always found chairs to sit in.

All in all, it was an excellent vacation. I’d highly recommend it. We have traveled a fair amount & found this one of the nicest places that we’ve stayed at. Please disregard the negative comments & enjoy! If you want a party place, this hotel is not for you. If you want a family, safe environment, the Barcelo is a great hotel.

Room Tip: Higher floors = less noise from the pool & nightly activities.

I stayed at the Barcelo with my husband and adult son April 5th to 12th, 2014. We have been to Puerto Vallarta many times over the years and it is second home to us. The Barcelo is set in a piece of paradise in Mismaloya, it's out of town and surrounded by lush palm trees, greenery and beautiful flowers! We took the bus into Puerto Vallarta twice, the bus stops just across the street from the hotel and is just 8 pesos each for the trip in. We also visited the Zoo (walked) and the Vallarta Botanical Gardens was also a short bus ride away, highly recommended! I had read some negative reviews but found the Barcelo to be a lovely hotel in good repair, the rooms are very spacious and everything worked, which is unusual for Mexico and the beds are very comfortable! The balconies are great and all rooms have a good view I would think. We have stayed at many all inclusive hotels in PV and would put the Barcelo as one of our favourites and a definate one to return to. We really enjoyed the food in the buffets, the breakfasts were great. Thanks you all of the staff (especially Claudia with her lovely smile for us each day). The a la cartes were easy to book, the food was OK and the wait staff could do with a little more charm (take a lesson from Anselmo at the Royal Decameron). The beach was a little small for our tastes (we like to take long walks) but beautiful just the same. We were checked in efficiently by Ana at reception and Vanessa (Concierge) booked the a la cartes for us in the same pleasant way. The pools are very well designed and were always busy, waterfalls make this a very attractive area. We will be back hopefully for 2 weeks next time.. Lynn, Mike & Garry - Calgary, AB.

I want to acknowlege Veronica Sylva in guest relations.
She makes our trip extra special and her attention to detail is exemplary.
She goes above and beyond to make our stay extra special.
Its an all inclusive resort but the employees provide amazing service.
