We just got back from Melia Puerto Vallarta ... We had a wonderful time. I wasted my time being nervous about the trip after reading some of the crappy reviews (here). The Lobby and Pool area are gorgeous... just ask yourself how your backyard looks compared to these pictures. I spent many days at the pool, and it was NEVER dirty. I don't know who these people are who are complaining - do they expect 5 stars by American standards? Maybe they have never vacationed in Mexico before. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The food was very good - one funny thing. One previous reviewer (Family Friendly Average Resort) Loved the Mexican food, but not the Italian. We had the EXACT opposite experience. I think it is just individual tastes. Do not be afraid to go here. It is a great place to vacation. We went without kids and were a little worried it would be too kiddy friendly, would we be surrounded by screaming kids the whole time? But no it was fine. Plenty of adults there too, and lots of room to spread out. I would definitely go back. There is always a bar and/or a place to eat open somewhere. The beds are firm, but I love that, so it was great for me. 5 minute taxi drive from airport is a plus too.

Room Tip: We were in tower two ... we heard the air conditioning is stronger in tower three, so if that is imp...

We stayed one week at Melia after a wonderful week in Sayulita. So to be fair we were spoiled and nothing will likely live up to that first week. We also knew from other reviews that this was a family resort.
The room was decent sized and clean although there was a strong musty smell in the room that made my husband wheeze. The ocean view was wonderful.
The buffet for breakfast was decent and we also enjoyed the dinner at the Mexican reservation dining option but were very disappointed in the Italian restaurant. The drinks were pretty good and plentiful. Maid service was good also.
Our biggest complaint is just the upkeep of the pool and common areas. There were areas around the pool deck that were so rough you would cut your feet if you weren't careful. The pool was dirty and many tiles falling off of the sides.
Staff was friendly except for a couple of the concierge. One afternoon when we had neglected to make reservations for dinner the young man who was working the concierge desk was very gracious and said "we will always make room for you" and then the very next afternoon we were told by a different person that it was just too bad we needed to make our reservation first thing in the morning and she didn't even look to see if there was anything open. Yet when we walked by several times we saw many open tables.
Several days (most of the week actually) we had barely lukewarm showers in our room. The bed was ok, a bit firm but OMG those pillows were horrible! Lumpy and flat! Also seems to be a lack of stair rails anywhere!
So we get that this is a family resort but why are there children in the Lobby bar after 9pm??
This is our last night at Melia and I will say that we are not likely to return unless we just need cheap lodging with cheap all inclusive. There are so many other places to stay and of course there is always anywhere in Sayulita!!

My husband and I (from Minnesota) just returned from a 26 night stay at the Melia. During this time we also had our 3 children, their spouses and 6 grandchildren for one week (ages 2 months to 7 years). The staff was amazing and the kids had the time of their life in Kid's Club. There was so much for them to do one week was hardly enough time to do it all. The evening shows were outstanding. Very very professional. The rooms were comfortable and very clean. The grounds are beautiful. Great location, with a great beach and a block from the Marina with many restaurants to choose from. The bus stops right in front of hotel if you want to go downtown. The food was good. You could always find something you liked on the buffet line. The specialty restaurants were pretty good, but the best part was the excellent service. We will most likely visit again next year.

Special thanks to Marco, Raul, Daniel and Carlos (the activities people), Nancy and the rest of the kid's club staff, Jonathan, Simon, Raul, Daniel, Benjamin, "Chili Willie, Julio, Antonio and so many more I can't even remember all the names. The front desk staff were also exceptional.

Here is our negative comments: This is a 30 year hotel and not everything is perfect. There are a few tiles missing in the pool, the timeshare people can be a bit overwhelming, but this is Mexico.

The Wi Fi was free in the lobby but not the fastest.

If you get the chance see Gabriela for a free photo session. She did a great job.

My partner and I visited with other members of his family. We enjoyed the food, the staff were friendly, and it was SO NICE to have our bed made for us. We were in Tower 2 which faces the ocean and overlooks the lagoon. It was a bit swampy smelling but watching the iguanas in the trees was cool. There is a very old, large iguana that likes to station itself either at the foot of the bar stairs, or it sprawls across the sidewalk and sleeps. Photo op! Just make sure you wash your hands after petting it, and please remember, they do bite.
Unfortunately I was really sick with a head cold most of the time I was there and struggled with the air conditioning...it seemed to really aggravate my symptoms, and other members of our family (who were not sick) mentioned the same irritation. So we turned it off. Problem solved.
There is an on site clinic and the staff are very professional and caring.

Room Tip: Tower one probably has the least noise and best view.

Thank you so much for your comments! As you may know Puerto Vallarta is located on a tropical wet zone so maybe that make you feel uncomfortable. We are really sorry that you couldn´t enjoy it more. I think that will be a pretext to come back and we will be ready to received you again.

Best regards!

We first stayed here nearly twenty years ago (Royal Maeva?) and, since then, four or five more times, and have always enjoyed the staff, food, bars (remember, if you ask for the Skyy, you can get it), and the sometimes-half-assed but always spirited resort shows. We do always go during a January slump and perhaps get better attention and service than we might get otherwise, though this year was unusually quiet, especially the week nights. Nonetheless, the buffet food is consistently way above average and often excellent. And "buffet" is a partly incorrect description because there are always at least two or three chefs cooking specialties to order, from omelettes to quesadillas, to -one night, outside on the patio flanking the stairs to the beach- a gigantic wok of stir fry! In fact the only disappointing meal we had there was in the semi-formal Italian restaurant which, even with a mandatory reservation, we shared with just two other tables. One peeve - I mention "semiformal" because I mistakenly went in a short-sleeve shirt (not a t-shirt) and nice shorts; rather than simply tell me that I needed to change into long-pants (which I was able to do and return before our reservation time), the maitre'd wasn't jovial or cautionary or goodnatured or kindly-pointing-out my abysmal wardrobe faux pas; he was rude and condescending (as corroborated by others in our party) - not the end of the world and I won't even dent the resort a star for this give-me-a-break type of attitude, BUT I have to point out that the meal we had there was the only one for which I shouldn't have had to wear pants. For crying out loud. Sorry for that tangent. Steer away from the Italian restaurant, ask for the Skyy, befriend the excellent bartenders, tip the maid, tip the servers, relax (Mexican Lucky and all that) and you'll have a wonderful time (or at least during slump season). Downtown and the
Marina are great and easily accessible for pubcrawling if you want. And though we too got a bit of a salespitch, we were able to pleasantly wrap it up in about fifteen minutes (note to Melia - when people first arrive, they still have work/deadlines/stuff-back-home in their heads; maybe you should give them a day or two to de-stress before inviting them to a presentation).

I agree with ignore the bad reviews!!!! I am a single mom of a 4 year old boy and we had a BLAST! The hotel is friendly and clean. Yes, it's old. It's beautiful.
The food was as to be expected in an all inclusive ,..but the marina is directly across the street for some great dining experiences. Walmart is a short 60peso ride away( we went to get some cool treats) the taxi waited for us to. We were in there 45 min and then 60 peso home! We also needed sun crean as we ran out any the resort was charging $40 cdn a bottle!!! The gift shop seemed to charge whatever they wanted for things even if the price tag was on it tho. You could safely eat everything at this resort and the drinks flowed. Beach area is small but you can really "swim" on the PV side of Mexico anyway. All in all the hotel and experience was great. We didn't want to leave. I do recommend ocean view rooms tho. Garden I heard was pretty poor. I stayed I'm a kid and co room. 1121. Great room!!!!!! We will definatly go back. As for kids club... It looked fun but I'm on holidays with my kid. Not to have them babysat.
