“Excellent resort”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 February 2010

Great resort with incredible staff. We purchased the "M" experience and would highly recommend. The food was amazing, pool was huge, lots and lots of things to do for free at the resort. Could not ask for much more in a resort.

The one negative to me was the "tours" desk, stay away from it. They lure you in right in the lobby and tell you about tours, seems very helpful and then comes the sales pitch to come see the presentation for the Melia vacation club. They swear up and down it is not a time share. We sat through our 90 minutes that we signed up for and were out of there. Let me tell you these are time shares!!! I think it is pathetic that they would do this to their guests right in the lobby of their own resort. This almost ruined our trip as the sales person did not want to let us go after 90 minutes, we ended up having to get up and walk out. He tried to tell us that the free massage or whatever was promised to us would not be given to us if he did not sign our paper saying we stayed for 90 minutes, are you kidding me. Wow I am getting worked up again just thinking about it.

We warned our friends who arrived a day after us to stay away from the "tours" desk. On their 4th morning they got a call to their room saying they had a package at the front desk. When he got there they instructed him that his package was at the "tours" desk and it was a welcome package (on day 4??). They obviously saw on their list that they had not pissed off the guests in room 14XX yet. I just cannot believe that a hotel would do this to its guests, telling them they have a package at the front desk I mean come on.

This is a great resort, but be warned that the time share employees could ruin your day.

The tours desk are the only people on the whole place that will disappoint you, the rest of the staff is amazing.

this hotel was very kid friendly (ages 6,4) with lots to do around the resort. there were many other families which made it a relaxing environment for us but if you're a couple w/o kids looking for romance this may be a little annoying for you. i've stayed at other resorts where the timeshare staff hounds you but no one approached us all week which was a relief. nothing too fancy, but the room was clean and grounds pleasant to walk around with fish to feed, iguanas, banana trees, etc. food was very good but probably wouldn't impress a foodie. several computers in lobby to check emal and wifi throuought although we didn't use it. i would defnitely come back for this fine family resort(especially with the low-key time share people which i find this to be a really annoying thing at mexican resorts when you can't pass through a lobby without getting ambushed). the only down side was there were two different hours (12-1/6-7 pm our time = 11-12/5-6 local time) when the main restaurants/snack bars were closed and of course this was the usual meal time for our kids and they got pretty cranky waiting to eat. we solved this with a non-alcoholic "pina colada" snack.

We just returned from a fabulous winter getaway to Melia Puerto Vallarta. We are a family of five with a 5 year old and 2 year old twins. We feel very fortunate that our travel agent booked us into the Melia! It was excellent! The size of the resort is perfect, large enough for a good selection of restaurants and activities, but small enough that it's easy to maneuver with young children. The pool is huge with beach like entries on every side, which again is ideal for young children. It was always easy to find a beach chair, and the serving staff was always attentive and friendly. The food in the restaurants was excellent, particulary if you like Mexican food. The Mexican Corner in the buffet restaurant was always good. The rooms were clean and the grounds were well kept and beautiful. Best of all though for us was the kids club. Our 5 year old loved the Bam Bam Club and was anxious to go there a little everyday. The activities were age appropriate and allowed her an escape from the heat of the midday sun. We especially loved Elena and Corina who truly seem to care about the kids, and do what they can to make it a lot of fun! The evening kids activities were excellent. Tristan does a superb job entertaining the kids, while entertaining the parents at the same time. The focus on children was so greatly appreciated. It made the trip extremely memorable and enjoyable for our kids, which in turn made it even better for us. We will definitely return to the Melia Puerto Vallarta, in fact we didn't want to leave.

We rarely do all-inclusive resorts. We went here with parents and young children.
Positives: excellent service, friendly staff, decent to very good food. Excellent evening entertainment every day of the week.
Negatives: Poor quality rocky beach . They say it is seasonal and it confirmed by locals we trust. The sand is supposed to be redeposited naturally in a week or two!
One of the reasons we picked this place is because of their kid club which we read rave reviews about, on this site. We were sorely disappointed. Our son is 5 yrs old and the club is for 5-13 yr olds and majority of the kids were older. The staff were not willing to engage him with age appropriate activities.
BTW, the property is older and a bit dated. If rooms are important, pick M experience. They have upgraded bathrooms, sightly better interior and guaranteed views.
We would go back here but with realistic expectations

We stayed at the Melia PV from January 10th to the 24th 2010 with our 3 ½ year old daughter. We arrived from the airport after the 5 minute drive in the mid-afternoon and had no issues checking in. We took other reviewers advice and simply told the ‘info lady’ who was standing by with our welcome package that we were just interested in going to our room. We were never bothered again.

The room:
Our room was in building #1, which was close to the pool and beach (although this is not a huge resort so you’re never too far away from anything). The rooms in building #1 looked directly onto the ocean.

The room itself was fairly basic, but clean and comfortable. The beds are quite firm, but the hotel quickly offered up some mattress pads upon request. After trying out the mattress pads for a night (with little or no difference) I asked the hotel if they had any other suggestions. While we were at the pool they had traded out our beds for pillow top mattresses. Again, thanks to manager Julian.

The food:

There is a buffet restaurant that is open for breakfast and dinner. We ate breakfast there daily, but only had dinner there three times. The food in the buffet was plentiful, fresh, and they had a decent variety.

For lunch there is snack bar by the pool the served burgers etc (cooked from frozen in front of you) and ice cream. Another lunch option was the La Palapa, which is a sit down restaurant. There was much more variety here (including decent Sushi, salads).

For dinner there was the buffet, Mexican, Italian, and La Palapa restaurants. We decided to rotate through the restaurants and their menus to maintain variety. We enjoyed all three, but seemed to favor the Mexican. Again, all of the meals that we had were well presented and tasted good.

Over all the food was plentiful and of good quality. It is up to par for a 4 star resort.

The Kids Club:

The Kid’s Club was great. Our 3 ½ year old fell in love with the caring staff at the Kid’s Club. They offered a variety of daily activities that kept the kids busy and happy in the clean and cool play area. Some of the activities included face painting, arts and crafts, physical games (such has hide and seek). The Kid’s Club had daily visits from one of the Flintstone characters.

-Free WiFi

The shows at night were entertaining and we made it to most because of the Children’s portion that takes up the first 45 minutes or so. Great for everyone.
The Marina is very close by. We would recommend getting a 90 minute massage at ‘Venus’ for only $50! There is a laundry mat a couple of doors down from Venus…drop it off and pick it up two hours later, folded and bagged.

Overall we really enjoyed our time at the Melia. It’s our opinion that if you are looking for a romantic couple’s getaway this is probably not the place for you. This is hands down the best family resort we’ve visited. I would and have recommended the Melia PV to friends and family. We would stay at the Melia again.

Please remember to ask the staff ( I would recommend 'Julian', he is a manager at the front desk) before you get frustrated. The staff at the Melia immediately took care of the minor concerns that we had.

This was our third visit to this resort, and with the economy in slow recoverery,it was also
the best value for our money, alot less money then previous trips with the same resort.
This resort has extremely nice grounds. The food is inconsistant, ranging from excellent
to sometimes not acceptable. We found that it was often cold, and on other occasions it was excellent. The staff are wonderfull and very helpfull, with the exception of maybe one or two.The bottom line is we would deffinitly return if the price was right.I was a little put out at the fact that the lounge chairs at the pool were dirty and some had sand fleas, also
there were bed bugs, but this is probably at every resort in Mexico. Please dont skip this resort, you will love it.

This was the 10th trip to Mexico for my wife and I to an all-inclusive resort, so we have a pretty good idea of what to expect within a given quality and price range. We also went with two other couples and stayed from January 15, 2010 through January 23, 2010. We all upgraded to ocean view rooms and the upgrade was well worth it. My wife and I were on the 8th floor and the views from our balcony of the resort itself and Banderas Bay were great.

Overall, we were very pleased with the Melia and could not collectively come up with any major complaints. Some minor complaints included a little difficulty climbing into and out of the tub for a shower if you were of shorter (5' 2") stature, a somewhat narrow beach, and fewer entree items in the dinner buffet than we have seen at other resorts, but that's about it.

The rooms were very nice and looked like they have been recently updated. The bed was reasonably comfortable and not as hard or firm as we have experienced at other resorts. There were only about 10 or so wooden hangers in the closet but from past experience we always bring extra wire hangers anyway. There is an electronic safe with a programmable lock, small refrigerator stocked with bottled water, soda and beer, and a wall-mounted hair dryer in the bathroom.

The hotel grounds were beautiful and well maintained. There was always a work crew out early in the morning power-washing tile and concrete, sweeping up and sprucing the place up for the coming day. The pool was large and clean with a swim-up bar. There is a pond/lagoon with a large koi population that you can feed from machines that take 5 peso coins, several resident iguanas including "Pancho" who appears to be the king of the hill, several ducks and geese. Always something entertaining to walk by on the way to or from your room. It was always easy finding lounge chairs around the pool or beach but I suspect that the hotel wasn't full due to the state of the economy.

There are four restaurants for dinner - the buffet, Italian, Mexican and steak house. Contrary to other reviews I have read about the Melia, we all found the Italian restaurant to be our least favorite. The portion sizes seemed small and the food was not all that memorable. The Italian restaurant was the only one that required a reservation. The Mexican and steak house restaurants take you on a first-come, first-served basis. We preferred those two restaurants over the Italian. The buffet normally had dishes with beef, chicken, pork and fish with a salad bar, pasta bar, Mexican station and dessert bar. Breakfast was at the main buffet and a lunch buffet was out at the steak house restaurant by the pool. The best item at the lunch buffet was the the burrito stuffed with various combinations of chicken, beef or seafood and fresh veggies, then heated on the grill. Overall, the food was decent and about what you'd expect for a resort in this price range. You could always find something at the buffets to enjoy. However, if you are coming expecting Michelin 4 star quality in the restaurants, you will be sadly disappointed.

The evening entertainment was (just) okay. The hotel staff that makes up the core of the entertainment staff were quite good dancers, but we've seen the same types of shows elsewhere. The shows were generally short, 30 minutes or so, and that mitigated some of the repetition in the types of shows we had seen before.

Overall, we found the service in the hotel to be very good. Small tips to restaurant, bar and pool waiters and the maid staff certainly help in that area. We have enough experience with past trips to know how to avoid anyone involved with time shares, so we were not hassled by anyone.

The Melia is located in the Marina area and you are just a short walk from the marina itself and additional shops, restaurants and convenience stores.

Would we consider staying at the Melia again? Definitely yes.
