“One of my favorite places in the world”
Reviewed 13 May 2013

I love this place. I have stayed here for 2 Decembers in a row (a week at a time) and am coming back for more next year. The price is UNBEATABLE for an entire apartment (bedroom, kitchen, balcony, dining table) with the best location in PVR in my opinion - right in the middle of the city by the rio cuale, just 2 blocks from the beach! The staff has always been great (I forgot my passport and called panicked from the airport, and they found it for me), the check-in process easy, and the other hotel guests friendly and pleasant. Having access to the 2 pools on the roof of the suites AND the larger one in the main building is a bonus; I just wish the rooftop bar was still in service, but I can see how it wasn't much of an investment. I wish I could live here.

Our party was a group of 9 people in 4 different rooms total (some 1- and some 2-bedroom); we took up most of an entire floor and it was great for "room hopping" at night. We even got to see a meteor shower from the roof! The only 2 cons, if any, would be the hard beds (which I hear is standard for all of Mexico) and the proximity to the crazy church bells during the Guadalupe Festival that is going on when I visit, but it's SO worth it. Oh, and we did get stuck in the elevator for a few minutes before climbing out, so don't be lazy, and I would recommend taking the stairs.

this is our third trip to PVR and our third stay at Hotel Encino/Suites Del Rio. However, this is the first time we used the suites which were wonderful to have a place separate from the bedroom. It was nice to make coffee and sit on the balcony watching birds and the people. Everyone goes out of their way to make you feel welcome and feel like you are at home away from home. You can't beat the price and location. I look forward to many more years of staying with our friends here in PVR

Room Tip: The jacuzzis are at the suites and the pool is at Hotel Encino. Good to know if one of these are a...

the maids, front desk, and management team treat everyone great --- puerto vallarta
has so much to offer -- great side trips, great food, nice beaches, art, big clubs, economical
food/transportation/drinks --Police presence is big and seems bigger every year with 4 or more
levels of police (tourist municipal traffic state and military) seems safe but we are not out late

This was our 4th year in one of the outside master suites, and we will be back next year, we stay for Jan and Feb, the Suites are spacious, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and adequate kitchen facilites and a long thin balcony which we sit and street watch on often...the roof with the small pools is a great meeting place of all the residents, and as many of us return each year its like one big family...the staff are great and we look forward to seeing them all each year also, the apts are so central, 5 mins to the Beach and the Malecon and walking distance to all the great restaurants downtown in the romantic zone..the apts are basic, but clean and homely and we cant wait each year to go.

Very large apt. King bed in each BR. 2 full baths. Perfect location. Nice view of river. Adequate kitchen. Gas cooktop, new good sized refridgerator, coffee maker, toaster & blender. No dish towels, paper towels, matches, or dish soap provided. Very hard beds and pillows. The place was very clean but some of the furnishings were very old. Intermittent Internet. 19" tv. Helpful staff. Very small pool but the pool area was nice to sit out on with good views. Beach towels provided. Felt very safe at all times. Price was great for the location and size. Our family w/ 2 teenaged boys was looking for a place with a kitchen & Internet. We arrived at 5 am and they let us in our room much to our surprise. We loved being so close to the malecon and south side restaurants. If you are looking for luxury go elsewhere. Would stay again.

My husband and I were looking for a hotel where we would be immersed in Puerto Vallarta, not tucked away in a cozy chain hotel outside the city, and Plaza del Rio was perfect. It is located adjacent to Rio Cuale and the flea markets, perfect for trinket shopping. It is also about two blocks to the beach and boardwalk/Malecon. The hotel had a large living room/dining room/kitchen, functional though small bathroom and good sized bedroom. The kitchen had pots, skillets, full service for four and a number of utensils, a four-burner stove and full-size refrigerator, and a breakfast counter with three stools. The living room/dining room had a table with four chairs and two long bench seats along the wall.

The kitchen did not come with any food or related accessories. Be prepared to bring or buy salt and pepper, dish liquid, paper towels, aluminum foil. The bathroom had a small bar of soap but no shampoo. Luckily, a small grocery store is just a few blocks away, across the river, where you can pick up basics cheaply. A bigger grocery store is just a few blocks further.

The bedroom was large, with a good-sized closet and a dressing table with chair and mirror, and two night tables. The bed was--as expected--quite firm, but comfortable.

The room had a balcony which stretched the length of the room from the LR/DR to the bedroom. View was of the street and neighborhood, nothing special, but a nice place to enjoy an afternoon margarita. No A/C, but the sliding glass doors had screened panels that you could open, and both main rooms had ceiling fans, so we were quite comfortable throughout our week-long stay.

The hotel had a nice rooftop pool, with two smaller pools and a larger one, along with lots of chairs. All this was partly in the sun, partly in shade.

Check in and front desk were at a hotel on the next block--not quite convenient, and we never did have a taxi driver familiar with our hotel building (we learned to give the street intersection instead of the hotel name). A taxi stand was around the corner, so we never had a problem getting a taxi from the hotel.

The hotel was incredibly convenient to EVERYTHING--strolling up the Malecon, heading south to the local restaurants and beach. It was even close to the local (read: cheap and delicious) street food. This is by no means a luxury stay--most of the people we encountered in the hallways, pool, and in the main hotel's lobby appeared to be Mexican families on vacation. We did hear street noise--both evening revelry and morning delivery trucks--to be expected in a downtown area. This is not the place to go if you need peace and quiet with sealed windows and A/C, with hotel staff to wait on you. If you are looking for a more authentic experience, want to feel semi-independent, and value the convenience of a kitchen--whether it's to keep margarita supplies cold or cook the fish you caught on a fishing trip in the Bay--this is definitely a place to consider.

The location could not have been better. Walk to everything and buses to beyond a short walk away. The suite was roomy and clean. The bed was very hard, as are most in PV. Good water pressure and temperature, all the appliances worked fine, no AC but the ceiling fans were quiet enough for us. Our room on the 3rd floor gave us a narrow view of the water and the cathedral. Front desk (at the Encino) was friendly, fast and quiet efficient for check in and out, and any questions we had. Did not use the safe deposit boxes because we felt quiet safe. We will definitely stay here again, and will recommend this hotel to others.
