“Great Mexian Getaway”
Reviewed 6 July 2007

Our intention was to getaway for a few days for a little rest and relaxation. We were interested in an all-inclusive resort, preferably adults only, where we would feel safe and have above average accomodations. Well.....the Golden Crown Paradise was an outstanding choice.

The room: The rooms were clean and the combination of air conditioning and ceiling fan kept the room very comfortable. The bed was very hard. However, that seems to be pretty common in Mexico. There was a musty smell at times but it didn't really bother us too much.

The property: The pool was awesome. My girlfriend spent many an hour floating around the pool, ordering drinks and reading her book. While the hotel was supposedly full, it never seemed to be crowded. You could get a "choice" lounge chair pretty easily. The beach was ok. This area of Mexico is not known for their beaches.

Dining: We were very pleased with the dining choices. Room service breakfast was served promptly. Lunch and snacks were at the poolside snack bar or restaurant. Dinners were outstanding. Paradise and Salvador are the 2 restaurants on this property. You also get a voucer to go next door to try their restaurants. Our meal at Salvador on our last night would have been $100+ in the states. Don't miss the "sexy coffee" at the end of your dinners. It's both a show and a great beverage.

Service: Overall, the staff was very friendly and accomodating.

Overall: We really enjoyed this hotel and would go back. We stayed for 3 nights, could have easily stayed a 4th. While there were guests in their mid-20's (lots of honeymooners), most were late 30's - 50's. The hotel did provide activities throughout the day. If you have kids, the property next door would be perfect. It was much more lively with lots of activities, buffet meals, etc.

Warnings: Watch out for timeshare salesman. Make sure you know exactly who is supposed to pick you up to take you to your hotel. As you exit the terminal, you are accosted by your new best friends, who actually want to sell you a timeshare. We booked with Funjet and even though we told the guy that, we took us to a friend of his who had a great hotel. Just keep walking past those people and look for your tour company.

To begin our trip, our agent had recommended this resort as an adults only, all inclusive hotel package. It is located next door to its sister club the Crown Paradise that is a family resort. This arrangement gives you access to both resorts with a unique choice of entertainment. Let us be perfectly clear that one of our main reasons for going to PV was the deep sea fishing. The location of this resort was in our thoughts in relation to the location of the marina where we would board ou charter fishing boat.

We departed St. Louis one hour early for PV via Funjet/Ryan International Airline where we found that the flight attendants were very knowledgeable about their jobs and shipping back extra cargo from Mexico. We arrived in PV where the pilot said it was 83 degrees farenheit but 83 there doesn't feel like 83 here due to the humidity so dress light. After a short bus ride to the terminal, clearing Mexican customs and securing our luggage we ran the gaunlet of Mexican timeshare salespersons (not a big deal just politely say no gracias) we located our FunJet rep who wisked us away to a car headed for the Golden Crown Paradise Resort. Once there we were greeted with enthusiasm from several staff members and a cool and fragrant towel. We presented our travel documents at the front desk and received our wristbands allowing us access to both resorts. And since our arrival was so early, we were informed that our room would not be ready for 45 minutes. Our luggage was secured and we spotted a bar near the pool area and asked if we could wait there for our room. We were informed that with our wristbands we could go anywhere and eat and drink anything we like. The bar that we headed to while we waited for our room was called the The Pub and Victor was our bartender and immediately welcomed us to PV and began assaulting our livers with the finest beer, tequila and frozen mixed drinks in PV. LOL! We spent more than an hour and a half drinking and shooting pool not realizing that our room was ready 45 minutes earlier. When we finally realized we had been there for an hour and a half we went back to the front desk and they said they wondered what happened to us, w e were escorted to our room by Jose' who while toting our luggage gave us an overview of the resort which was easy to follow. The room was spotless and cool. The air conditioning worked perfect. The water pressure in the shower would knock the conditioner out of your hair and our beach front room overlooked a perfect view of the beach and ocean.

To address several points the drinks were plentiful and as strong as you asked them to be made. We brought our own large thermal mugs and they filled them with whatever we wanted with absolutely no complaints whenever and wherever we were on the resort. Oftentimes we received chuckles from the other guests and bartenders but what can we say we like to drink. The sandwiches at The Breeze Bar during lunch are nice, light and refreshing. Make sure you set your reservations for Salvador's or the Paradise Club restaurants as soon as you get down to the beach or pool at the activities bar where both menus for that night are located. And say Hi to Melvin for us. We preferred Salvador's over Paradise but they were both good. The Sexy Coffee is a must even if you don't normally drink coffee. As we had stated before we did go deep sea fishing and the fillets of sailfish (60 lbs. worth) that we brought back to the resort, were readily prepared by the girls at the Poolside Grill and later by the chefs at the Bella Vista Cafe. No we did not eat 60 lbs. worth of sailfish ourselves we shared with at least 30 or so couples. And for the record we caught almost 700 lbs of sailfish that day. If you are interested in deep sea fishing in PV drop us a line we will direct you to what we think is the best.

The resort in general is awsome. There are plenty of activities everyday when you are not outadventuring. The tequila volleyball is a must play everyday at around 4:30 p.m. If you are thirsty drink. If you are hungry eat. Breakfasts are a little bit different depending on where you get it. The Breeze bar has fresh fruit and omlets and cereal and it's in perfect view of the waves crashing on the beach. The Bella Vista has sit down dining and freshed squeezed juices and heavier fare (eggs, pancakes, bacon, etc.) Must try the Tenderloin tips in mushrooms, onions and chili sauce for breakfast, a real treat, but menus change daily in all restaurants. As far as drinks, I (Tammy) liked the Swimming Pool, the Snowball and the Miami Vice (all frozen drinks!) Max drank mostly Sol (which tastes a lot like Miller Lite) is the only beer served on the resort except for Club Nitro (across the street) which serves other brands of bottle beer and is included in the all inclusive package. The shows at Club Nitro vary night by night and are vaguely entertaining. The venders are everywhere on the beach just politely say no gracias or pretend you are asleep in a chair. The shopping is better dowtown in the Malecon on days that a cruise ship does not land which we heard was Wednesdays when prices double. Yes this was an all inclusive resort but tipping for good service provides superior service in the future and beyond. We are already in the planning stages of our next PV trip and would encourage anyone to book with this resort.

A couple more points or notes, bullfights at La Paloma are on Wednesdays and start at 5 p.m. but are seasonal and are worth your time. Please act respectful as this is a huge part of Mexican culture. The rythms of the night tour is worth every dime and is very romantic and both are very close to the Golden Crown Paradise.

In summation, our trip was fantastic, if you go hungry it's your fault, if you are thirsty you must have missed the service staff or are too lazy to walk to the bar. the food can range from standard american fare to local gourmet. The people that we met ranged from in their 20s to their 60s from the U.S., Mexico, Canada, the Netherland and Great Brittain. If anyone has any specific questions, you may contact us.

My husband & I just returned from a 5-day stay @ GCP. We chose this resort after reading all the great reviews.
The good: We had a suite, which was very large, plenty of space, clean, well-maintained, with large balcony & fridge. The housekeeping was very thorough, cute towel art & flowers daily. The resort activities were fun, pool games, shows, water aerobics. Sunset photographer wonderful. Check-in was quick & easy. Don't get there early if you plan to check in right away. We arrived around 430pm, went straight to room. Never a problem finding chairs on beach or by pool.
The BAD: NO HOT WATER, never, not once the entire trip. I tried 2am, noon, 10pm, 5am. NEVER a hot shower, lukewarm at best, mostly cold. A MAJOR ISSUE if you enjoy hot showers (we do).
The food was pretty bad overall. Paradise restaurant was best in resort, beach buffet next door was best casual dining. Ate outside of the resort the last 3 days due to terrible food @ resort. Room bathroom very awkward; partial glass "wall" instead of shower door. Situated in awkward manner causing you to contort your body between toliet & around glass wall to turn on water. Perhaps would work better if wall was on same side as toliet instead of opposite. Don't know how anyone larger than me (160 lbs)could manuver it. Bumped my knee/stubbed toes on toilet nearly everytime getting out of shower.
The drinks; totally watered down, no matter how much you tipped. No name brand liquors or beer, NONE. Drinks in child size "cups", even soft drinks, ice tea, etc. Finish entire drink in 2 swallows. If you're @ the pool, you can't get beer in a mug, only if getting it "to go".
Timeliness: Nothing opened on time from beach towel booth onward. This doesn't happen w/ 5-star service.
VENDORS: too many, too much. The resort should be able to limit the time they are allowed to spend around the resort. By day 3, I was tired of saying "no gracias", especially when they stand right over you while you're eating. Not just one, they keep coming interrupting the meal constantly. Very irritating. After being harrassed by 4 vendors during the meal, I finally yelled "I'm Eating" to one as it had become so ridiculous. I have been to Mexico, different parts 7 trips, 2nd time in PV & have never experienced vendor invasion to this degree. It should not be allowed w/out some limitations, like certain hours, not approaching people throughout the meal. etc. Did not experience this @ other resorts.
Went on a few excursions, they were all fine, ATV, Las Caletas & Rhythm of Nights, toured the city on our own, where we shopped & found some good restaurants. Overall, I'd rate this resort no more than a 3-star mostly due to the drinks & food. Golden Crown could learn a thing or two from Paradisus Riveria (Cancun/Playa, truly a 5-star). We definitely would not visit this resort again if we retun to PV in the future.

This was our first trip to Mexico and our first all-inclusive trip, and it definitely exceeded our expectations. We're low-budget travelers and we felt spoiled. We read lots and lots of reviews before choosing GCP - mostly positive, some not so positive. Our experience was definitely positive.

Staff members were very, very friendly and attentive; food was decent to above average (but I'm pregnant and very picky right now); room was comfortable and clean; drink service was great (lots of mineral water!); breakfast was AMAZING - my favorite meal of the day.

There's a family resort next door, which you can use while staying at GCP. It has even more restaurants (including a buffet), activities, etc.

What I'm glad I knew beforehand: the water in PV is not crystal clear. It's rougher and has waves, as opposed to other places with blue waters and good snorkeling. To snorkel, you'd want to take a side trip to a nearby island.

What I wish I'd known beforehand: the gym is very decent and people actually use it; the timeshare people are sharks and 90-minute presentations actually take six hours; SPF 30 sunscreen doesn't cut it.

What I didn't care for: cream-cheese-filled sushi (but I didn't go for the sushi); tequila volleyball (which I didn't play); the occasional jellyfish sighting, which didn't keep us out of the water at all.

I'd highly recommend this place and we'll definitely choose it again if we return to PV.

This was our first time staying at an all inclusive resort, and we were kinda nervous. Our first night there we met some great people and ended up with them by the pool every single day! If you don't want to have fun...this is NOT the place for you. If you want peace and quiet, go on a cruise to Alaska!!

Noah, Milton and Miriam made our pool experience the best we've ever had. (ROTATO!!) You must do the "Sun Dance" right before Tequila Volleyball.. Ask Milton to play the "CHICHARONI" song!! (tell him Gary says Hello)

We loved this place and WILL be back next year.

We arrived at the GCP about 3:30 June 8th.Check in was only a few minutes, then up to our rooms.Very nice clean room.Could not ask for better,as it was ocean front room on the 4th floor. We got into our swim gear and were off to to pool.We found chairs to sit on no problem and went right to the bar to see Aldo.He is amazing to watch in action.A tip of a few dollars now and then, and he would have a new drink ready for me almost before the other one was finnished. That is what I call great service. The pool was warm, but cooler than not being in it.We found the music was in very good taste and not too loud like at a lot of other places we have been.We stayed until evening, then went to dinner at the buffet next door.Dinner was good.Next day we had breakfast at the buffet next door.Great omlettes. Then back up to the room to change into swim gear and out to the pool for a day of relaxing.I must of ate about 10 pork tacos a day at the pool snack bar. They are awsome. We ate dinner at Paradice twice and Savadors once.Good food but small portions as I already new.But just ask for more and you get more,no problem. We took a poolside scuba class with Lisa, and went on a scuba dive out in the ocean the next day. That was amazing. We want to scuba dive more now.We watched the pirate ship almost every night shoot its cannon and fireworks. That was awsome.Mostly we just hung out in the pool talking to differant folks from differant places and one day in the ocean in front of the hotel.Very relaxing trip.I will more than likely return there and stay at the GCP again.Every body on the hotel staff was very nice and polite. That makes it much more enjoyable. We checked out Wed June 13th.Very simple and fast check out.We stayed in the pool until we had to go to the airport at 3:00.There hospitality room is very nice. They even have someone there the hole time watching your luggage. That is a nice touch. Can't wait until next time........

Since our first visit back in Dec 2003, we have been back twice-Dec 2004 with another couple, and in Jan 2007 I took my 68 yr old mother. Now my husband and I are booked for Dec 2007.

Why go to the same place when there are soooo many other places to see? My husband and I have never been disappointed with the GCP and her staff. 2005 Club Marival in Nuevo, 2006 Couples Ocho Rios, both nice but ehhh. (I have reviews posted on those properties) We take several 4 - day trips throughout the year and one week with family .This trip is "our" only 7-day and we really do not want disappointments. Midwest winters are tough and in Dec. PVR has the most dependable weather (truly paradise). We have five kids, love them all dearly-really, but this is our vacation- adult only properties are a must. PVR has a handful of adult-only properties. The Get-A-Way is 18+ and kind of a dump-- a little more hedonistic for our tastes. The other two are 16+ -- no thank you (did I mention that our 5 kids ARE teenagers!!!) GCP is priced very well if you book early.

Since we just booked and we are so excited to return. I thought I would update from my last trip.

GCP remains an excellent choice to meet our criteria. One of the best all-inclusive properties we have experienced. In 2007, The food was excellent. Plenty of choices for breakfast. Lunch at the Patio is my favorite--pork tacos and the chicken--ooh la-la. Fruits and vegetables are plentiful. Dinner, try all of the restaurants even the ones next door. They are all good. Bring some nicer clothes. Make your reservations early to have more dining options. Belle Vista is my favorite--for breakfast and dinner-something about sitting outside. One meal was mucho caliente and Javier was back with the menu offering another choice.

Drinks are great, service is 5 star. If you want call ask for it. (With all the booze flowing and going to waste, it is prudent for the staff to serve rail unless a specific brand is requested) My latest kick is champagne and drank it all day and night--:~ Enjoy the Breezes bar on the beach watching the sunset while sampling some sushi. This is our favorite stop before we go up to get ready for dinner. (Actually it is our favorite stop most parts of the day!!) The Patio bar is great place to hang in the shade and play some pool.

The entire property was clean and well maintained, maintenance crew visible all day . They still use plenty of bleach. Rooms and room service outstanding. BUGS, they come from the fresh flowers- do not keep fresh flowers in your room. We received a bouquet and kept them on the patio table. If the bed is too firm, housekeeping does have foam toppers. Plenty of seating, Nice sized beach and clean. The pool still clean- yes bottle blondes may turn green from the copper in the pool. Bring a hair clarifier with you and be sure to rinse your hair when you get out. This is not exclusive of GPC. Pool activities, yes music absolutely, Obnoxious people, I suppose I've seen a few by the end of day, but really how bad can a bunch of 45-50yrs olds get??? If you want quiet the beach area has plenty of lounge chairs and shade

Towel issues-- i don't get it. I have never had a problem with towels; beach or room. Bottle water.. there again we got two daily whether we needed them or not.

Massage and spa service is pretty good. We had the massages-relaxing. I had a pedicure--pretty toes!! Good prices, pamper yourself.

Definitely do either the Pirate Ship or the Rhythms of the Night.. Both are fun. Pirate Ship is a booze cruise with outstanding comedy skits and crowd participation, fireworks, and dancing, decent meal. Rhythms of the Night, semi-booze cruise to a private island to watch an ancient Mayan wedding ceremony, quite erotic. I took my mother to this, there is a lot of walking up hill and it is dark- lit with tiki lamps--very navigable though, so don't let this discourage you. The ceremony is followed with a buffet dinner that had a wide variety of choices. It was really good. The ride back is more of a party since they keep the beverages to a limit on the way out so you do not spend the time on the island in the bathroom. Both ships have 'heads'.

Downtown PVR--what can I say, DO IT!! $4.00 taxi ride. Explore what the city has to offer, sightseeing, great restaurants, bars, shopping. The week we go they celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe everyday with streets parades, mariachi bands, and
fire works--super fun street festival. The city is safe day or night, just don't leave your street smarts back home.

Okay - I will be sure to update the up coming trip( more timely) Perhaps that review will just say---It' s Still All Good!!
