We stayed but one night prior to leaving for home and wanted to satay downtown close to the Ocan, shops and restaurants. Hotel Catedral is in an EXCELLENT location for it all. The hotel is very clean, serene, comfortable with great outdoor areas for lounging. Service was fantastic with friendly greetings when you walk in to great assistance with any of your needs. The hotel is a basic old style Spanish hotel so don't expect alot of frills and spaciousness like in a big resort. It has exactly what you need with the personal touches from the staff and the decor. Just as described on their website. We would definitely stay here again.

I had a wonderful week long stay at Hotel Catedral. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. They did a great job of answering all my questions about the area. The hotel is older and has a wonderful Mexican charm to it. I enjoyed starting my day with a cup of coffee in the courtyard. The hotel is clean, comfortable and centrally located. I found it was very easy to walk to the Malecon as well as shops and restaurant.

Just back from our quick (4 night) trip to Vallarta. My husband and I love staying in Zona Romantica, away from all the BIG resorts and BIG prices. Hotel Catedral is in a GREAT location; 2 blocks to the beach, across the street from the Mercado Artesenias; 2 blocks from the Malecon, and a quick taxi ride to anywhere in Vallarta!

As for the beach - we just find an umbrella and lounge chairs at a nice little restaurant/bar on the beach and negotiate "all day" prices for drinks and food (speaking Spanish really gives us the upper hand here). Hotel Catedral DOES have a beach club partner, it is called Si Senor. We went to Si Senor the first day and were treated very well...they had great food and drinks, but it is a bit far from the hotel.

The room we had was WONDERFUL! 3rd floor, right on the street (Rodriguez) with a balcony. Didn't notice noise at all during the night. Room was very very clean, well furnished and had a great A/C unit.

Bathroom was fine, a bit small...but who really needs a giant bathroom on vacation. Let the hot water run for a min or two if you want to take a hot shower...otherwise, enjoy a refreshing cool shower. My husband didn't really like the hard beds, but I didn't mind them at all!

The lobby and central courtyard were incredibly charming with lots of plants and beautiful furniture. We arrived about an hour before check in, we were given a room to shower and change clothes in, went for a quick lunch, and by the time we were back our suitcases were already in our room!

The service here was fabulous...all employees were very polite and helpful! Will definitely stay here again!

EXTRA TIPS: We ate breakfast and fresh licados (fruit juices) every morning 2 blocks away at Malibu's. Take a taxi to Ay Carimba restaurant for dinner ---> AMAZING view of Vallarta and delicious food! For authentic and cheap Mexican food in a beautiful atmosphere head to Gaby's or Restaurant Fusion.

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony on the street!!

My wife and I wanted to stay downtown close to the Ocean, shops and restaurants; this hotels location met all objectives. The view from the penthouse was great and there is a private sundeck above the room. Many very good restaurants were but blocks away and the boardwalk along the Ocean w/ the many shops, bars and eatery's were all right there. the staff is great...very friendly.
This is NOT a resort hotel, it is an authentic hotel you would find in Spain or other old parts of Europe. Beds are decent and there was a pillow and soap choice. You are not paying for a Hilton, so don't expect one. The bathroom did not have an electric outlet so we used on by the bed and had the mirror on the closet...no big deal. It may be a good idea to bring ear plugs if you are not use to city noise as the Church Bells ring often.

To call the Hotel Catedral Vallarta a 'boutique hotel' is a vast overstatement. Many of the services listed on the website do not exist or do not work: the security box / safe in both rooms that we tried did not work, there was no 'pillows menu', no choice of hand-made soaps 'to personalize our room', and no membership to the hotel's exclusive beach club - the Amapa Sunset Beach Club.

In addition, although one of the two rooms we were given had been given a superficial, cosmetic uplift, both bathrooms were in desperate need of renovation and basic maintenance. There is a reason why there are no photos of any of the hotel's bathrooms on the website.

Plus the room we were assigned for the first night had a heavy industrial chemical smell making you wonder what sort of toxic fumes you were inhaling while you slept.

And finally, since the windows in this hotel have not been upgraded, the all night traffic noise is horrific making it impossible to get a good night's sleep.

Only coffee and a Oreo cookie for breakfast.

Room Tip: There appear to be some longer term rental rooms that might be upgraded and quieter -- but that is just a guess.

Thank you for your review. I should confess that while reading it, I got kind of confused.

You are 100% right about the safety-boxes. We did have a problem with the model of security boxes we selected, but... I have good news, we are changing them all (as I am writting this March 6th, 2012) we will install 3 - 4 per day so in 5 - 7 working days they will all be replaced, with a new 5101 Honeywell Digital security safe.
But, the other services you mentioned, are all available at our Concierge desk.
The 'pillows menu', The "Hand-made soaps" and the 8 different fragances to choose from, they are all available for all our Guests (at our Concierge desk), and, our Beach Club, is now called "Si Señor" Restaurant, Bar and Beach Club at "Los Muertos Beach" It is there, you just have to walk down and they will take really good care of you ( I keep getting excellent comments about their new Menu and service).
When you wrote : "Only coffee and a Oreo Cookie for breakfast" I must specify We never offered a complimentary Breakfast. We do advertise "Complimentary Coffee and Tea Service 7 am to 11 am" and that is exactly what we deliver.

About the Washrooms, Do not take this as an excuse, but no one ever complaint about the type of Bathrooms we have. We do get comments since some rooms do have a rather European configuration of the Bathroom, but, honestly, while We refurbished this Puerto Vallarta 50´s landmark hotel, there were some things we did not wanted to change, to maintain the Character of the property, We kept the original set up and we keep getting excellent comments about it. I thank you again for your comments, and We do understand

We cannot please everyone, although I want you to be sure That is our Main Goal. : )
