“Fantastic stay!”
Reviewed 29 January 2012

Our stay at this hotel was simply wonderful! The staff were friendly and attentive, the pool side service was wonderful and the food delicious. The hotel and rooms are spotless clean and stunning, way beyond my expectation, views are amazing as every room has ocean view.
The music and ambience of the pool and dining area were relaxing and pleasant. All the meals were prepared to order and I enjoyed that there was no "herding at a buffet". It really did feel like you are a guest and what ever you asked was attended to. This was a relaxation getaway for 9 days and our stay was perfect! I would not hesitate to recommend Sunset Plaza.

"In order to 'set the stage' I first must say that I tried to contact Sunset Plaza Beach Resort via e-mail 3 times with questions regarding our stay @ their resort ( they acknowledged receipt of the e-mails). NO REPLY>so upon arrival I already was frustrated. Check-in was delayed due to multiple check-ins; however we were placed outside (resort side), given our champagne and then forgotten. Not really a big deal but added to our frustration. Standard room was a 'hotel' room with wonderful floors, great bath (shower exhilarating) and fabulous extra large balcony. Next issue was the smoking from the adjacent room--on the balcony and with our doors open to enjoy the waves we had the smoke in our room--needless to say we were unhappy since the hotel is a 'non-smoking' facility. It took till the next day to get this issue resolved--by moving us to another room.---'Yes we had to move, not the smokers' (I understood that the smokers were charged $500 for violating the no-smoking policy)! This also meant that the people we were traveling with had to be moved. The 'Butler' manager offered us help to move--2 butlers for each room. Our butlers decided to tell the bellboy to help me and they disappeared--too lazy to help a guest and outright insubordination. I ended up having to repack everything and do the move which should have been handled by the 'butler'. Turn down service and pillow menu a nice touch. In my opinion the 'butler' service is just a 'glorified request service' just like you would expect to receive @ a hotel. The bellboy delivered the luggage and the maids took care of the room and turn down service. I will say that one butler helped me the day I had the flu and stayed in our room--thank you. The 'Butler' service was confined to the rooms. The rest of the service was provided by waiters, bellboys, towel service and grounds keepers. In reference to one of my questions was the confusion many other reviewers have stated about whether or not there is a buffet. NO BUFFET, menus the same each day for both restaurants (Tues-Thurs-maybe Sat? for the Italian one). The third 'deli' food place has not yet opened. Basically you eat every meal @ the same restaurant. The web-site does state that there is a buffet and I pointed that out to them. No buffet but our dining experience was amazing---waiters were able to have prepared for us meals 'our' way if we did not order from the menu .Quality fresh food and premium drinks---can't go wrong. Grounds were immaculate and nice warm pools. Great that the 'sun beds' on the beach came with the all-inclusive package. Speaking of 'all-inclusive' the tips are not included as in other resorts. No presssure to do the 'time share' thing and the usual tour service one finds at a resort. Presently I consider Sunset Plaza to be a 'hotel'--not a 'resort'. There is no evening entertainment as you find @ a resort. Grounds are small but adequate for the 112 rooms they serve. I 'heard' that the owners have plans to tear down the 2 adjacent resorts now in operation and build facilities such as Sunset Plaza in their place. If this happens it will be a wonderful expansive resort. It however is located in a 'dirty' part of Puerto Vallarta---surroundings are pure city. Sunset Plaza is located to the center of the bay and gets direct ocean currents---not the more soothing waves in other parts of the bay that are more secluded. All in all I believe that Sunset Plaza strives to be an upper end 'resort' but it is just a hotel with great decor and fabulous dining."

Room Tip: Go for the suite if you want any luxury---the rooms are just that---hotel rooms.

We just returned from this hotel and I would never recommend it to a friend. It is new and there are a lot of new people not only new to the hotel but new to the hospitality industry. We were dissapointed in the room, the air was not working and there were no less than 6 different people working on the problem from 5 pm till 2 am with no solution. The second night they finally agreed there was a problem and moved us. The manager Renee was hard to reason with. Then there were these crazy over promises. Again Renee, after a bad experience in their top restaurant, promised a gourmet meal with two waiters on our last night. We arrived at the agreed time 8:30, no one had our reservation or information, at 9:15 still no one had it figured out. The manager on duty actually told us to just leave there was no way this dinner would meet our expectations...Nice...Then the manager on duty agreed to take care of a few things on our bill and sent us on our way. That didn't happen either..All I have to say about this place is you get what you pay for. It was not worth wasting our precious vacation time!!

Room Tip: Higher floors are better.

Stayed 6 nights during second week of January. The weather was beautiful and allowed for full use of all pools which are heated just in case the weather doesn't cooperate. We used the adult pool which is enclosed with a bamboo fence. Quiet and relaxing. The staff is friendly and attentive. The turn down service at night was particularly nice as towels and washcloths were replenished, and in addition they tidied up and put the blanket on the bed. We were all inclusive and the food was all served ala carte (no buffet!) and was delicious. It was reasonably priced as well. We will most certainly return. The location is great with easy access to downtown shopping and wonderful restaurants. We take the bus down and a taxi back. We always feel safe in PV.

Room Tip: All rooms are ocean front, so you can't go wrong.

This is new facility in the northern hotel zone sandwiched in behind the Villas Vallarta. The building is a 14 story structure. Each floor is only one room deep so all units have a great ocean view. Large terraces for each room.

We stayed in one bedroom which was huge. King bed with foldout in living room. One bedroom unit has kitchenette which is fully equipped and two full baths. Two flat screen TV's with cable, mix of Spanish and English stations.

Grounds are well kept and public areas are spotless. Has free wifi, small gym, three spa's, large infinity pool and smaller adult pool. Very nice kids club for young children(probably best for under six)however there is Wwii machine for older kids.

Staff is very nice, helpful and accommodating.

One restaurant that is open air with cooking area behind the servers bar but they open an indoor dining area 3 times a week with an Italian menu. Menu varies every 2 or 3 nights. Appears there are three basic menus. All inclusive is an option and you order from menu. Snack menu for poolside is pretty much the lunch menu. Thankfully there are no buffets or "fiesta nights". Food variety and selection is above par to PV hotels. However it is a bit pricey if not on all inclusive plan
.
Two bars, poolside attached to restaurant and lobby bar with sports on TV.

This is a quiet place, during our stay mostly adults with a few young children. Outdoor music is low key and played at low volume.

The"concierge" will try to get you to go to vacation ownership presentation. You can say no and they will stop pestering you. Don't fall for the pitch, it is no deal!

Again great staff! I recommend this place.

Downtown is a 7 minute bus ride costing six and a peso's, save the cabfare for something fun.

I can't say enough good things about this place...we visited Jan 3-10, 2011 and this was one of the best all-inclusive resorts (all inclusive is not mandatory) i have ever stayed at (and i've stayed at about 32!). There was people selling time shares but they told us about it once and that was it...never heard from them again. The hotel is new, so of course everything looks great....the rooms are modern and well appointed with beautiful ocean views and large baclonies. The service is amazing...everyone is very attentive and friendly but not over bearing. Aside from a few miscommunications about food orders (be very specific if you are asking for alterations to menu items) everyone was professional, well mannered and for the most part social. My biggest reason for choosing this resort was the a la carte dining...you order everything from a menu and each item is prepared fresh for you....the food was good to excellent, but is probabbly the best i have ever had at an all inclusive. Lot's of choices...amazing fillets and ceviche...and delicious buffalo chicken wings on the snack menu.
We spent most of our days at the adult pool under a cabana where we had the most amazing service by Gustavo who was awesome and kept our drinks coming and our bellies full! Nice jazz music played throughout the resort and dance / top 40 in the lounge /bar. We like to tip for good service and we tipped well...just like we would at home. A few pesos goes a long way to really enhancing your vacation and they are really appreciative to receive them. Generally when we travel we often leave the resort to eat b/c we get tired of the buffets ...but the food was so good we never went for dinner once elsewhere!
The pools are awesome and the drinks were always amazing!
The location is close to town...a 30 minute walk or 50 peso cab ride...we went out to bars and clubs a few nights when we were looking to party a little or dance. For kids there is a kids club...but thankfully there was no poolside childrens games or loud music from the "entertainment team" which generally drives me crazy at other resorts.

Will definitely by coming back to Sunset Plaza! If you are looking for a relaxing vacation in a modern hotel with amazing service and great food...this is the place for you!

Room Tip: If you spend time in your rooms or there are 3+ people, definitely go for the suite... they are huge...

We stayed two nights at this resort and only moved to a different one to be closer to some family who had rented a place much further south. We booked a one bedroom suite and the accommodations were outstanding. The room was spacious (seemed bigger than the square footage quoted on the web site) and had a completely equipped kitchen. The decor was lovely and the design very thoughtfully done. There were multiple outlets for electronics, plenty of lighting, a jacuzzi tub, and double sinks in the bathroom. The deck was big, with two sun beds and a table and chairs. We have stayed in some world class hotels and I would say the accommodations were equal to the best. At around $220 per night all inclusive, it's a steal. The beach is small but sandy and beautiful. The food was ok. We did not think the breakfast was great, and we only ate one night at the Italian restaurant. It was not one of the lovely open air restaurants that you find at some of the all-inclusive hotels, and does not have the variety of offerings, but, at that price, who cares? We enjoyed going to town one night and eating at Pipis. We ended up staying at Dreams Resort for the remainder of our stay because of it's proximity to our friends. My husband liked Dreams better because of the variety of restaurants and activities and beautiful grounds, but it was more expensive and the rooms not nearly as nice as Sunset Plaza.

Room Tip: Go for a one bedroom suite. It's a great value.
