I attended a yoga retreat at this resort from Dec 29th to Jan 5th and overall I think the place has a lot of potential, but the staff have to work a bit harder to make it really competitive with other yoga resorts/retreats. The website advertises it as an "eco friendly" resort, which is cool - but it felt a bit more like a camp than a resort. First, I stayed in the Big Palapa shared room during my stay. To get to all the rooms you must climb up really steep stairs, then once the stairs stop you have to follow a dirt path to your room/cabin. Now, if you are fit, this should not be too much trouble except when it rains, when it then becomes very slippery and actually quite dangerous. They advised us to bring flashlights but did not make it clear just how dark the place gets at night. In the Big Palapa shared room, there is one light switch for the whole place, including the bathroom. This meant that if you woke up early (as is often the case when taking a morning yoga class) or came in late you either had to find your way in the dark or otherwise wake up all your roommates.
The place is beautiful and when the sun is shining you do feel like you are away from it all in a very special place. Also the spa is very good - though a bit pricey by Mexican standards. Everything is priced in dollars so it is clear that they are catering to an American clientele. In order to draw in the Americans though, they really need to work on their customer service. 90% of the staff were really very kind and helpful, but the restaurant did not cater to varying diets - at all - and though they widely advertise additional activities they were not very helpful with setting them up. All in all Xinalani is okay, but if you are looking for luxury, pampering, healthy diet or activities, go elsewhere for your yoga retreat.
