“Great time at Casa Iguana”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 February 2009

We have just returned from a 2-week stay at the Casa Iguana hotel. We usually go all inclusive but this time we were doing a budget vacation and from what we read this hotel seemed to be a good fit. We were a little unsure of our decision when we first arrived as it was a very long ride from the airport. We then had to drag our luggage up to the third floor as there is no elevator. When we awoke the next morning we were pleasantly surprised by the fantastic view. The room is rustic decor and the kitchen is equipped with most of the necessities. We were able to get a hairdryer and iron from the front desk but not an alarm clock so I would suggest taking one along. It would be nice if the rooms were equipped with an alarm clock, microwave oven and toaster. There is only a 2-burner cook top which takes quite awhile to heat up. Having said that we did get used to it and managed to cook several meals during our stay. Our daughter loved the little dog hanging out at the hotel and wanted to take it home.
We are a family of four (2 teenagers). This is not the hotel to stay at if you like some nightlife as there are really no bars around and is quite a long way from downtown PV. We liked it though as it was peaceful to come back to after spending a hectic day out. We bused into town several times for shopping and meals as the bus fare is cheap.
We ate dinner at the attached restaurant the first night and breakfast quite a few mornings. The meals were good but a little pricey for a family of four to eat at very often. Staff and management was helpful and solved a couple of issues we encountered.
The beach is a 5-7 minute walk and make sure you take some money if you want a chair/lounger to relax on.

We had an extraordinary problem - my traveling companion became ill on arrival at PVR. She was taken to the hospital where she was diagnosed as having had a heart attack.. After three days she was able to proceed to the hotel, Casa Iguana, where I had already been staying. I continued on the itinerary, while my friend stayed at the hotel alone. I say "alone," but she really wasn't, as the staff treated her like family. The warmth and generosity of everyone, from the owner on down, was unbelievable - they waited on her, brought her food, ran errands, checked on her often. In addition, in the comfort and beauty of the surroundings, my friend actually enjoyed herself. You won't find a better place to stay.

Wow ! My husband and I were here from 1/29/09 to 2/5/09 with another couple and wished we could stay another SEVERAL days/ weeks . We have never found a vacation paradise quite as amazing as Casa Iguana !
First of all , we had an over one hour delay in our arrival flight but we were still met by smiling , relaxed Alfonzo from the resort to give us a ride . He was very pleasant to chat with , understood english quite well and was more than happy to provide us with answers to all of our questions along the way to the resort. The resort itself is nestled in the mountains and provides you with a total sense of peace and beauty . The grounds are beautiful .... the pools are cleaned daily , towels were available by the office , and we never once had to battle for a lounge chair . In addition ,the ability to sit on the balcony in the morning with your coffee and enjoy the sunrise , hear birds singing ( including the roosters crowing) and watch the Mismaloya kids walk to school was great. While in the pool area later in the day , you could even see iguana's in the trees sunning themselves !
The restaurant , Boca Bento, is run by Stewart and his wife , Monika ....... it has 5 star food and drinks all day long and is it's own hidden paradise ....... make sure you try the fresh squeezed orange juice ...... there is nothing as wonderful as that flavor in the USA this time of the year ! Our group also greatly enjoyed their "mexican eggs" .....the breakfast potatoes ...... the brown sugar cinnamon french toast ...... guacomole and pico ......, shrimp dishes ,pasta , ribs .....in addition the beef was wonderfully prepared and was as high quality as any top restaurant in the USA . You will also love the desserts ....all of them .... we made a point of having dessert every night .... the passion fruit sorbet , the three flavors of creme bruelle , the chocolate heaven , the key lime pie , etc..... there is clearly NOTHING on the menu that will dissapoint you !
If you are wondering about "things to do " , Stewart is happy to chat and assist with details as are the front desk staff . We found that "Willie" was very helpful and set us up with the most amazing day trip ever ! ( whale and dolphin watching with the availability to scuba , snorkel , kayak , and have beach time all in one tour ) She and Stewart also encouraged us to explore the Zoo and the Botanical gardens which were fantastic.
I could probably go on and on for quite some time , but in summary , I just want to reinforce that if you are lucky enough to spend time at Casa Iguana you will have one of your best vacations ever and will walk away already planning a way to set up a return trip in the near future ...... it is truly a piece of heaven on earth . Feel free to contact me you have questions , want more info. ,etc. Thanks !

We stayed at Casa Iguana twice. It is a good deal if you have little kids, like us, because you get a two bedrooms and a large living room, whether you need it or not. So we were able to place one child in one bedroom, one in the living room and the adults in the second bedroom. It worked very well. The kids loved the little pool there. There is a shallow end, where they could splash around. The restaurant has a high chair. And the kitchen made us dishes that were suitable for kids (as in, not too spicy) and were happy to make pasta for us, which was not on the menu.

Negative: Both times we stayed there, we walked around with flip flops because the floors were rather dusty. There is no elevator. We were first placed on the fourth floor and though the view is nice, when you have kids, you have a lot of stuff to carry. The kitchen stove didn't work well, but eventually we managed to boil some eggs on it. We did make use of the fridge and that was handy. The staff don't automatically give you pool towels, you have to ask for it.

Like my title says, if you are looking for a nice quiet place this is it. The grounds were immaculate and cleaned every day. The room was very clean. The beds are quite stiff but my wife put the extra blanket under the sheet and that helped. The A/Cs are new and have some quirks that they are working on, but we were comfortable. For all the people that complained of stray dogs: Don't go to Mexico! They are every where and if one or 2 find their way onto the hotel grounds it's not that big a deal. They were very tame and left everyone alone. I never saw more than one and it was just sleeping in the courtyard. Vicious little poodle! ;)

If you are looking to use the Kitchen be aware that some items are missing. We had a coffee maker but no filters. We just used paper towels. There were no forks so we ate with the spoons. We actually cooked several meals and saved even more money. If you decide to do that make the short hike up into town to the other little mini mart. It is much cheaper than the one at the hotel.

Yes it is out of PV proper but we were really happy it was. So much quieter and no Diesel fumes! It is an easy ride on the bus at the corner. It costs 6 pesos and comes every 8 minutes or so. It runs from 5 am until 11pm.

The Staff was very nice! Stewart is the manager and he drove us to the airport himself on the day we left since there was some dispute with the city about shuttle buses going to the airport..

The on site restaurant is REALLY good! Not exactly authentic Mexican but super tasty.

Overall we really enjoyed our time here. If you are looking for the perfect Americanized place, go elsewhere. If you want a relaxing enjoyable stay and like a little local flavor this place is perfect!

This is the best kept secret around. I have stayed here since it opened a few years ago. For a low-priced hotel, all the amenities of a big chain are provided. I was able to get help with airline reservations and quirky phone cards from a manager who was also desk clerk, concierge and a million other things.

The only complaint I had, and I was very candid with the manager, was the music coming over the speakers in the reception area and the pool. Personally, I do not like background music around a pool when I want to relax. I want to choose my own sound if I want it at all. The enclosed area produces an echo effect, magnifying the noise. I told the manager that the music adds absolutely nothing to the ennvironment and that I would rip the speakers out of the wall upon checkout.

Don't let this both you, though. This is a super place and relatively undiscovered.

  • Liked — The value for dollar, pool area
  • Disliked — The music over the loudspeakers - totally unnecessary

We really enjoyed our trip to Puerto Vallarta. Casa Iguana hidden paradise, still very affordable. The hotel was absolutely beautiful and so peaceful. The staff is very welcoming and a joy to be around. Very good place to stay if you'd like to get out and explore the area. Local bus system runs about every ten minutes, only .$60 to town.
