The Canto Del Sol was a fun place to stay and they had done some renovations to the bathroom in particular the bath tubs which were removed and new ceramic tile shower stalls were put in. The hallways also looked like newer floor tiles were installed. The beds of course were a little harder but on a whole they were very clean and the Maids were very efficient and friendly. There was a 40 inch TV in the room also. We were overlooking the pool area and also had a view of the Ocean. The Kids had a room with a balcony looking straight out at the ocean. Gorgeous view. If you want quiet I would get something like the kids had ( room 394) as on our side there was also the bar which stayed open till midnight and you could routinely hear some party revellers till two or three in the morning. There were poolside activities every day starting with aerobics at 10 am and then beach volleyball at 11am and water volleyball and polo (in the pool) and fun blackjack poolside for prizes. I won a bottle of tequila. There was music poolside all day and it wasn’t at all over powering as you could carry on a conversation with no problem. At night they had a stage which had an evening show at 8pm each evening with a different show. It started out a little lame but picked up towards the middle of the vacation. The views were beautiful and by the ocean there were the regular Mexican vendors but not really annoying. The staff was absolutely fantastic. Alec was the M.C poolside along with Saul (pronounced Sa-uul) and they were just amazing. Very patient, polite and always willing to help and give you whatever information or directions that they could to help you out. The poolside staff, especially Jorge who was our poolside waiter and was always there with a marguerite, cervesa, pina cola or whatever you wanted from a selection of maybe 20-25 drinks!!!! The bartenders, all, were courteous and very prompt on your drinks. There was a buffet setup and there was a large selection of food to choose from. A portion of it was repetitive but not to the point where you wanted to leave and go and eat out somewhere else. Always a fresh selection of fruit. Specialty omelettes cooked for you the way you like for breakfast and specialty pasta for supper. Near the ocean there was a cabana where you could be served breakfast over looking the ocean. During the day this was a snack bar with French fries, hamburgers, nachos, tortillas and all the fixings’ and drinks. The food here was also good for a fast snack. With our stay we had two specialty restaurants included in our week stay. One was Italian, which was across the street at the Sister resort. I think it was called Verraza and it was nice and acceptable. My wife had the Mahi-mahi and was not feeling to well after! My kids and I had the pasta, pork and chicken and it was good. The other was a Fine Mexican right in the Resort and it was very good. Waiters were fantastic and very friendly and the food was very good. We tipped at both restaurants but it was not mandatory and nothing was posted or mentioned to guilt trip you into tipping. Front desk staff was unbelievable as were the bellboys and the rest. There were time share people on site but they were not bothersome. There were some absolutely beautiful clay and hard surface tennis courts. I am not a tennis player but for those who are this would be a great spot. The resort has a board for you to post for matches. Also on site was a workout facility. Although my workouts were limited to lifting drinks I accompanied my son there and it does have enough equipment to do a full workout. There also was an activity center for kids on site. We had older kids so can’t comment here. The yellow cabs out front of the resort will take you downtown for 50 pesos and to the marina where most of the cruises by boat leave from.
We went whale watching which was accidently booked by the onsite agent. We were to go snorkelling but schedules changed and she was unaware of the change. There were lots of whales but my teenage kids were very bored. Paula Charboneau was our Transat rep and she refunded our money no problem. We then booked Las Caletas for $85.00 per person which takes you to John Huston’s former residence and is accessible only by boat. This was absolutely the most fun trip. The boat ride took 1 ½ hours and you arrive at paradise. We went on the 11:30am cruise and as soon as we arrived we were greeted by a Woman in traditional garb with a huge snake. They took pictures and later you could purchase them if you wanted. We then had lunch. Ribs, chicken, veggies and lots of other food and fruit which was very good. Again there was an endless supply of drinks here and on the boat. We then went snorkelling and saw loads of fish. Sat around on the beach, kayaking, a nature walk to the jungle and if you pre booked scuba diving. The staff was unbelievable here. Emilio was our host on the boat and he was totally entertaining. He had a dance contest with the children and then he dressed in a pink wig and fake breast and he and another staffer did Olivia Newton John’s Saturday night fever. It was hilarious!!!
My only complaint was we could smell cigarette smoke every morning. Next door there was a smoker and on checkout they asked how our stay was. We informed them of the smoke smell and they told us we should have gone to guest services and they would have addressed the problem.
In a nutshell I wouldn’t hesitate to go back to Canto Del Sol at all. Yes it’s not the Sheraton but I’m not a Sheraton type person! This was a resort that gave you the real look and feel of Mexico and the guests were friendly and we met a lot of other people no problem. All in all a fantastic vacation.
