This is one of the finest boutique properties we have ever stayed at in the world. The owner/manager that established it acquired over time homes and their gardens on the hill behind the cathedral. She obviously had deep pockets with which to work, but that's not infrequent. What is unusual here is her extraordinary level of taste and the superb ability to turn these various homes into a unified whole that works sublimely. In this creation she also assembled one of the finest collections of Mexican antiques in private hands, and they are displayed throughout the hotel and in the rooms.
The gardens are beautiful and well tended. We're always amused to sit in the large entrance lounge and watch newcomers walk through the wooden doors from outside. Without exception
jaws drop. They're greeted by a large bubbling fountain and surrounding plantings. The interest builds, as the hotel is located on a hillside and one walks into and up and down various levels, with surprises in each.
While there we found that two friends who are architects were visiting from New York. We invited them over. Architects don't often impress easily. In a word they were speechless, and they pointed to details of workmanship that a layman overlooks.
The service is, like the hotel, exquisite and efficient. The restaurant on site serves excellent food with views of Puerto Vallarta. We dined there several times during our 7-8 day stay. This was, I believe, our fourth or fifth time here, so we look forward to a return. It never disappoints. How could it with such beauty, service and food. The sheets are linen, giving one an idea of the quality and comfort that exists here. There are various sized suites, some offering stunning views of the city. In a word it is magnificent. Many websites exaggerate. The beauty shown on this website is very, very real.

Room Tip: Rooms away from or above the restaurant tend to be quieter at night.

Sometimes you just have to splurge and boy are we glad we did. We've never stayed in such a quaint, romantic, charming, and beautiful setting. With the luxury pricing we were originally hesitant to stay here but are thankful we did. We'll remember our HSA experience for the rest of our lives and wouldn't think of visiting PV again without staying here.

Room Tip: Rooms in the main building are closer to the pools and set inside the stunning main hacienda. Rooms across the street offer a little more privacy but require a little more thought when heading to the hacienda. The church is closer to the rooms outside the hacienda and if you're a light sleeper the constant ring of the bells throughout the night is quite loud if you're a light sleeper. My wife barely noticed but I was up all night. Next time we go we'll shoot for a room in the main hacienda.

If you are into an experience you have to try the Hacienda San Angel. A beautiful restored hacienda restored into a smalll luxury inn and restaurant. Amazing views, open terrace and the best part is the Mariachi band, horns and violins. They are amazing. Oh, and the food and service will make you happy too.

As of January 1, 2014, all restaurant must include the 16% IVA in the prices on their menu. In addition, HSA adds 20% to the bill as a tip for your convenience. This means that a standard margarita is now 148 pesos including tax and tips.

The place remains as magical as ever, the food is good and hot, and the mariachis have improved from last year. They play many stringed ballads in addition to the usual fare. They seem to react well to some well-placed applause too.

One word to the wise. Ask for the bill to be detailed in pesos. We did not specify, and being Canadians, they assumed we were USians. We asked them to recast it in pesos so we could reconcile it. There were lots of discrepancies in prices not matching the menu. And they had overcharged us at least 500 pesos. It took them half hour to redo the detail. This might just be the result of all the new prices.

We still recommend HSA as the goto place for PV. Just ask them for a bill in pesos at the outset.
And, if you have a large group of 8, make a reservation on the rail. Stay away from the pool area because that is where the mariachis play.

This place has a MAGICAL feel about it, when you walk in your eyes will see lights on the stairs, antiques, paintings, fountains and then you will be escorted to the balcony, where you will dine and if you go about sunset, you will see a marvelous view and colors reflecting from the sky into the water.
There is no detail that has been missed, (even the napkins and plate has a monogram on them). Yes this is a little high. but well worth it, because you will take your time dinning and listening to the lovely mariachi band.
Two different people said you must go there, and now I can tell other to do the same.
