“La Bomba--La Excellent!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 February 2014 for a stay in January 2014

4 of us stayed here the last week of January 2014.

I have to say, the pictures don't do it justice. It is an exceptionally beautiful property--and enormous! I got lost looking for my room the first couple of nights.

But what really made this a first class place to stay was the service. We hired Claudia (also the maid) to cook breakfasts and suppers for us. Her cooking was amazing and I already miss it. She would start or breakfast with fresh cut tropical fruit, yogurt, granola, daily bought bakery pasties, and fresh squeezed orange juice. Then on to the main course which consisted of a different Mexican dish everyday.

As we were eating breakfast one morning, I mentioned to our group that I love mangos. The next morning we were service fresh cut mangos along with the other fruit. Her attention to detail is uncanny.

Her suppers were equally amazing. All were incredible (except when we deviated from here menu--and asked for stupid things like hamburgers (frozen patties) and frozen pizza that we cooked---sorry again about the mess in the oven Claudia!). I have to say, too, for the hamburger meal--we BBQed late one night, she gave the meal her all by preparing French fries, a huge salad with homemade dressing and cut up veggies for the burgers.

We were told before hand to just let her do her thing in the kitchen, and learned she is the expert and should have left well enough alone--who knows what she would have whipped up those nights.

I should also mention, because she uses fresh local ingredients and lean meats, the food was also very heathy and I didn't gain a single pound the entire time--even with all the Coronas and margaritas. Speaking of which, there were more than a few times she went above and beyond while she was cleaning to stop and squeeze limes so we could have fresh lime juice in them!

As for her maid service, again, outstanding. She has to be the hardest working woman in Mexico. The place was always spotless by the time she was done. I made my bed each morning, but she'd come and make it right each day. LOL.

On to Tomas, the concierge. What can I say, the man has superhuman powers and left us in awe on many occasions--including our first meeting--when he was giving us the lowdown while I was trying to inflate an exercise ball I brought with me (along with the wrong pump--that was only putting in a slight puff of air at a time). He saw I was having trouble and insisted on giving it a go. He said he wouldn't leave until it was inflated, and after much sweat on his part, he stuck to his word.

Another time he booked a private tour of PV for us in van. The guide picked us up at our door and started down the very steep and narrow cobblestone street and when we got to a very hard to maneuver L turn there was a car parked in the way. We thought, now what, because backing up wasn't an option, only to see Tomas with the situation fully under control. Somehow he had managed to make it down the hill before us, find the driver and had him in his car moving it.

Another time we took a cab from the neighbouring zone back to the casa. As we got out I heard the driver say it was 500 pesos. I thought that sounded high, but couldn't get my money converter running until after he drove off. Luckily I made a note of the cab number, and when we did the conversion it turned out he charge us 10 times the rate. We told Tomas about and about a half hour later the cabbie was at the door giving us our money back.

Tomas really knows his stuff and he was a wealth of information on any topic we asked him about. If he didn't know off the top of his head (which was rare) he'd find out immediately by making a phone call.

The casa itself...

It is huge and sits on five to six floors (if you count the laundry room).

Each bedroom is on its own floor with its own bathroom. The living room/dining room and kitchen are on their on floor with a half bath.

There's also a half bath off the rec room which on the same floor as one of the bedrooms--so people using that have access to two bathrooms.

The casa is carved into the side of a hill that overlooks a river and an island and the populated hills/mountains beyond.

The building appears to be made of concrete and as a result we never heard each other in the other rooms. In fact, if we called to each other, we usually had to go looking as you couldn't hear much from floor to floor.

Three of the bedrooms are outstanding! We all thought we had the best shower in our room. And there was no shortage of water pressure or hot water. We all commented that once we got in the shower, we never wanted to get out.

All the bedrooms have decks off of them with great views. The mater bedroom on the top floor also has a view of the ocean--and we planned to watch the sunsets from there, only to discover (unfortunately) a high rise hotel has been built that totally blocked it--at least at the time of year we were there. Instead, we saw the sun sink behind a building.

While this is listed as a four bedroom unit, when we were shown the fourth one, which is located down a tricky concrete staircase and the closest room to the river, it had a musty smell that had us all opting for the other three bedrooms. It's too bad, because the room was nice enough and had its own bathroom, but the smell was a turn off.

I should mention that due to his sheer size and the amount of floors and it's location, this is not a place for the frail. Most of the staircases have handrails, but some do not.

There is no bedroom on the main floor when you walk in from street level, so unless you want to sleep on the couch or the daybed on one of the main floor decks (yes, there's two), you'll have to climb stairs.

Location...

This place is located around the corner from the old Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton casa Kimberly, so it makes a great reference point if you get lost. Another great landmark is the bridge/stairs right next door to the casa that lead down to the island which then leads to downtown and the malacon. The stairs may look imposing at first, but they are at a very gentle slope and easy enough going up and down. Unless your big on an ocean front property, which none of us are, the location can't be beat.

Wear and tear...

As with anything, there is some wear and tear to the casa. A couple of chairs need some work, and the water fountain and the waterfall weren't working. The air conditioning in one of the rooms was working when we first got there, but Tomas had it fixed the very day we told him about it.

The pool (which is not heated) is beautiful with the dolphin mosaic, but some of the tiles are missing. Kind of a shame because it is one of the nicest features in the home and even recognizable from Google satellite maps.

Anyway, these are minor quibbles in the grand scheme of this grand home.

We feel fortunate to have experienced the service and surroundings of Casa La Bomba, and hope to do it again soon.
