“Boutique Hotel”
Reviewed 17 October 2012

Stayed at Casa Cupula for ten days recently. The service is truly excellent from the manager, Tina to the concierge, Fernando and to all of the waiters in the hotel restaurant, Taste. A special shout out to Chino who was the pool bartender. It was also a pleasure to meet and spend some time with Don the owner.

We stayed in room 201 which has a good view of the water (unfortunately a newly constructed condominium building blocks about half of the view) and a great terrace, shower and mirror. It is just above the restaurant Taste so you hear the conversation once dinner begins, not a sound we found bothersome.

The hotel does have to get the wi fi straightened out as we had numerous problems; although the staff did their best to assist.

As far as overall rating we put it down as very good (as opposed to excellent) as we think it is a little expensive, especially for the rooms, breakfasts, drinks and tours. The hotel provides a 50 peso voucher for breakfast but it is not sufficient to cover even a small continental breakfast. If money is no object and you do not mind a 10 minute walk to the beach this is the place to stay.

It was our first time to Puerto Vallarta and we really enjoyed the experience. Beach is great, people are friendly, and food is very good. In addition, it is the most gay friendly place I have been, other than perhaps Provincetown and Key West.

We would in particular suggest Los Veranos Capopy Zip line tours, which you might consider booking through Diana tours. It was a hoot, once you get over initial jitters. The staff was excellent and lots of fun. Also the parasailing from the beach in front of Blue Chairs was reasonably priced and lots of fun, a piece of cake after the zip line tour.

Also if you want really great bar food and a very lively atmosphere check out Hot Fridas on Los Altos. Owner Chris and his dj partner and staff are very welcoming. A great place for a quick dinner, good drink, wild videos, and all in all a great time. I think we went four times in a 10 day stay.

Tip for a romantic dinner is La Palapa on the beach. Waiters are very professional, the restaurant is beautifully appointed and there is a very romantic view of the beach and sunset. For a fun ending to the evening check out any of the flaming coffee drinks. It is worth the show from the waiters.

Room Tip: Ask about the views as this is a real plus in the better rooms. There are cheaper rooms on the pool...

Thank you for your kind words! The guest is absolutely right, our new season's review of our new WiFi system was plagued by a finicky server that wouldn't keep running for more than a couple of hours without a reboot. It has been replaced, and as our throughput has more than doubled since last year and we have installed new WiFi towers and load balancers we think everyone's experience will be better than last year for free, with a new premium option for even faster service. Thanks for your patience with opening week jitters!

Had booked 4 nights at Casa Cupula ( CC ) and 4 nights at the Sunset Plaza in the Hotel District of Puerto Vallarta …. We cancelled Sunset Plaza after going to the Hotel area of PV which was rather trashy touristy and full of kids everywhere so ended up staying at CC for our full 8 nights in Romantic old town of PV. Loved the hotel, staff, food and our room…room 303 was fantastic. Was also nice being in the lush green valley in old town and 5-10 minutes’ walk to Blue Chairs Beach and all the local restaurants, bars and clubs. Hotel was very clean, facilities were well good…pools, gym and the restaurant called Taste was fantastic. Will definitely stay again : )

This is our second time staying at Casa Cupola. The last time we stayed here was four years ago and had an amazing experience that we decide to revisit. For this trip we decided to treat ourselves and rented the penthouse. The pictures online look great but when we saw the room in person it was just breath taking. Its spacious with 1500 square feet of space. The suite has just recently been redecorated with tropical colors. The suite comes with all the amenities you need to make a perfect trip rememberable. Everything from surround sound music that plugs to your iPhone to amazing views that are priceless. The suite has a very homey feel to it but with a modern edge to it. The bathroom is very spacious. It has duel head shower, double sink and your own stand up urinal. Next to the bathroom there is a jacuzzi with beautiful views of Puerto Vallarta. The suite also comes with a washer and dryer. The penthouse is two floors. On the second floor you have your very own private infinity pool, two lounge chair, out door dining table, out door shower, out door urinal, sink and your own grill. What else can you ask. There's basically no need to leave the property if you are just looking to relax or entertain guests. The staff is very welcoming and friendly. They go above and beyond to make your stay very enjoyable. The restaurant has been incredible. We have had three meals so far each meal has been terrific. The dinner meals are reasonably priced. The property has a gym. The beach is just a 10 min walk or you could take a cheap cab drive to the beach. If anyone is looking for romantic get away or just a relaxing place to go to please check out this beautiful gem in Puerto Vallarta. My partner and I love Casa Cupalla, and you will too.

We stayed in the jr suite the first two nights and fell in love. Wish we stayed there the rest of the time.
We then moved to a king bed room which was underneath the restaurant. My partner woke at 8am every morning when they were setting the chairs up at taste. They didn't bother me.
The rooms were kept clean and the pools were relaxing.
Mosquitoes were brutal up there on the hill and they ate me alive. That isn't the hotel fault. But we found a gap in between the screen door frame and the brick that allowed them to get in. Along with the loud lizards.
Overall, we would return. We enjoyed ourselves a great deal.

We're glad you'll come back and the problems noted are already being corrected. As part of our summer renovations, we're installing new flooring for Taste Restaurant which includes a sound barrier to block noise to the rooms below. The screen has been adjusted, but the little "Cuizas" (geckos) that make a sound like tapping keys on glass are part of our jungle setting, and they're considered good luck and worth protecting because they eat the mosquitoes!

It might also be worth noting here that we are also renovating the pool area, with new floor tile, new fountain, pool bar and cabanas...more luxury for our guests! As part of this, the terraces in front of rooms 101 and 102 will have more privacy.

Best vacation I ever had. Wonderful staff, fantastic food and superb amenities. Can not wait to return this winter.

Hands down this facilities at Casa Cupula are equivalent to any 5 star hotel in the states. The professional staff and Concierge service is superb. Facilities are maintain at a very high level year around. My compliments to Don and his entire team for making Casa Cupula the destination to stay when visiting.

Room Tip: All the rooms are superb. One tip I would recommend is the Short Ribs on the dinner menu and Eggs B...

From the amazing rooms, to the best food at "taste", and the fact that the entire staff knew our name, the "get away" vacation turned into the perfect week.
A day trip out of the resort made us realize we didn't want to leave and we quickly returned.
Not only will we be coming back, but will be spreading the word on how amazing this resort is. Run, don't walk!
Special thanks to Tina, Victor and Pancho for taking great care of us.

An incredible place! I would definitely recommend staying in the Romantic Zone instead of the Hotel Zone - the hotel zone seemed sterile and Americanized. Casa Cupula is located in the Romantic Zone, an area better situated for an authentic Mexican vacation! Yes, there will be an incredible amount of steps that you will be climbing up and down (going to the beach and town), but that is actually part of the fun (and you know your legs could use a work out)!

We stated in the Cupula Suite - it was a huge room with kitchen and 2 floors (a large bedroom is located upstairs, just below the hotel's cupula). The onsite bar and restaurant (Taste) was superb, but a bit too pricey to eat there every day. Great for drinks by the pool, too! Breakfast was lovely, eating on the terrace with a wonderful view and nice weather. No worries, though... plenty of fantastic cheap eats available a short walk away in town. The staff was very friendly as well.

Due to the location, there was a bit of navigation that took some time to figure out. Once you walk down the stairs from the hotel, there are several more stairways you can use to reach the beach and city. One could simply walk down the road on the hill every time, but there are shorter routes depending on where you are heading. (This will make much more sense once you've walked into town). For a quicker route to the blue chairs beach, take a left on 200 (the main road) and look for a hidden, very long stairwell beside a white building. For a quicker route into town (where the bars are), walk to the Convenience Store at the bottom of the Casa Cupula drive, then look to your right. It will be just across the street.

For a fun side trip, head to the botanical gardens, about 30 minutes south. To reach the gardens, catch a bus at the corner of Carranza and Aguacate streets (the bus trip can be an adventure as well... it is a rickety bus and we had to stop at one point due to a mule in the road). Nice gardens with a fantastic restaurant on site.

One suggestion - the office (which you walk thru to get to the gym and some rooms) frequently had a couple of dogs lying around. The dogs stunk.

Overall, the trip was fantastic and Casa Cupula was a major factor. Highly recommended!!

Room Tip: Choose a room with a balcony!
