What a great place to stay in PV. Beautiful rooms, great views, wonderful food, amazing staff but oh too many stairs! You really need an elevator boys, I stayed the first 4 nights at the Casa Cupula Suite which was nice but more stairs up to the bedroom. Last 4 nights was in the Penthouse Suite and I could have stayed here forever. The private pool is my favourite spot.

Room Tip: Penthouse Suite is the best

Excellent staff (helpful, thoughtful, and pleasant!), great location (40 peso cab ride to the beach or a short walk), nice big room (room 102), comfy bed, CLEAN (that's important to me). The restaurant was good but not fantastic. If you do stay in room 101 or 102 be ready to get up early. These two rooms are direcly under the patio seating for the restaurant and when the morning staff comes in to open the restaurant the banging of the chairs on the patio will definitely wake you up. Again, if you are an early riser like me that's not a problem but if you wanna sleep late better get a different room. The property is well maintained, not super crowded (which I like), it feels a bit secluded (which is good). This is a legit property for people who want to relax and enjoy themselves. A gay property for sure but not one which is overly sexual. The guests I met were all respectful professionals. Overall a fantastic trip! Thanks Jose, Edwin, Logan & Jesus!

I stayed at Casa Cupula July 18 - 25, 2014 and I could not have been more impressed with the accommodations. I was looking for something upscale and not part of an all-inclusive and Casa Cupula delivered. Casa Cupula exceeded every expectation. Room 101 was wonderful, and a few steps away from one of the hotel's 2 pools. After a long day at the beach or walking around town, I could jump right in the pool to cool off and lounge poolside before heading back to my room. When I wanted a pool with the view, the rooftop infinity pool did not let me down. Nothing feels more luxurious than sitting in the infinity pool overlooking the hotel and the town, with a view all the way to the ocean. The staff and Casa Cupula was incredibly knowledgeable and courteous. They go all out to make sure your experience is as pleasant and safe as possible. Yes, you'll always hear comments about the hill, but it was walkable, even in the heat of July. Plus, cheap cabs are everywhere. I'd recommend Casa Cupula to anyone who's looking for an alternative to the all-inclusive but not willing to sacrifice luxury. And Taste has some of the most delicious food in Puerto Vallarta. Definitely make it a point to eat at the restaurant at least once during your stay.

Thank you very much for the comments.

As you mention, we are in the tropics so it does get hot in the summer. Cabs run $50 pesos, which at 13:1 is under US$4 to go anywhere in the "centro" area. In most US cities you can't get in a taxi for this little. So if it's hot or raining the plentiful taxis are a good choice as you mention.

And we're really glad you liked the food at our Taste Restaurant. Because we know it's impossible to please all the people all the time! ;)

Room 101 was recently remodeled so we're glad you enjoyed it.

This review is a little late. Our visit was the first week in June, 2014. We stayed in a suite, 1 floor down from the reception desk. The suite had a king bed, full kitchen, balcony, and living room area. Also washer dryer. We liked the suite a lot. The washer dryer was a great addition that you don't usually find at a hotel. We used it 3 times in our 7 night stay. The bed was comfortable. We were quite happy with the room. The sofa bed in the room was terrible. The mattress dropped around 4 inches where your hips are so you wake with a back ache. The facility was nice. Reception boys were cute and helpful.
Now, what we didn't like so much. Lock on the door to the balcony was broken so anyone could get into the room from the balcony and enter the room. We complained twice during the visit but it was never fixed. The safe in the room was not bolted to the wall. It was just sitting on a shelf. Anyone could have easily walked off with it. The location is on a hill and is close (overlooks) the Zona Romantica. But it is not in the Zona Romantica. There is a steep unpaved road from the main road that goes up a steep curvy road to the hotel. You really need to call a cab every time you leave the hotel. We walked once to the zona romantica from the hotel, and it only takes 10 minutes, but you have to cross a busy street with poor visibility (curves) and fairly heavy traffic. The footing is not great on the steep hills to the main road. You would certainly not want to walk back to the hotel because of the hill and footing problems. You wouldn't want to attempt the walk down the hill from the hotel after dark, in fact they warn you not to do so in their literature in the room. The biggest disappointment was the Taste Restaurant. From the hype we read in Trip Advisor and on the Casa Cupula web site, we expected some decent food. It was terrible. By far the worst restaurant we experienced during our trip. It was expensive to boot. The flavors were off. We sampled many items on the menu and were unhappy with them all. The pool is tiny, as is the gym area. The Friday night party was boring. For all these reasons, it is doubtful we will ever return. The room was the high point and had it not had a broken door to the balcony and a broken safe, we would say it was excellent. When we checked out we explained what we were unhappy with and what we liked. The seemed very interested in what our experience was. But when we explained about the door that wouldn't lock and the safe that wasn't bolted in place, they said that it was a very safe area, as if that meant that it was ok to have these security problems.
Housekeeping was very good and air conditioning worked well.
Summary, we were happy with the room, but didn't like the location, which was inconvenient. We hated the restaurant. Would probably not return. Although they can't do much about the location, it would be a relatively minor fix to properly bolt the safe to the wall and fix the balcony door so it would lock. Had these things been working properly, our review would have been better. We didn't feel that what we considered to be serious security problems were taken seriously by the staff and management. As far as the Taste restaurant goes, that needs a major makeover. Lastly, I'd like to make a disclaimer. We arrived at the start of the slow season and occupancy was low throughout Vallarta. Restaurants were empty, Occupancy was low. Perhaps things are better during high season. We wanted to love Casa Cupula, but it didn't meet our expectations.

While we're glad you liked the room I would definitely have titled the review " A Glass Half Empty", because it seems quite negative for minor issues. Here are a few factual replies:
1) the little alley to our hotel is city property, we do not control it. However, as we write it the road is being repaved with Casa Cupula's financial support, so it will be much better for this season. Can't fix the hill though.
2) The room safe was probably replaced and the bolt-down was overlooked, it will be fixed. I doubt that a reaction of "the room location is very safe" which is quite true, means we don't need to fix such things. A simple report from the guest is enough; it's already done.. We have 24/7 reception and watchman service, and cameras all over the property. No one was getting in we didn't know about.
3) Taste gets very good reviews and is generally listed in the top 20 or top 5% of all Vallarta restaurants. That said, someone who referred to a summer-season party as "boring" (e.g. the fault of the hotel) and the food as "terrible" might have required a grain of salt on both the food and the review. We cannot please all of the people all of the time, but a "makeover" is both non-specific and rather drastic.
4) We are a small boutique hotel with 3 guest pools. We have left the Olympic sized pool out of our development plans. Was there no room at those 3 pools?
5) The gym is larger than most hotel's gyms with hundreds of rooms. Again, perspective. Is it Gold's of West Hollywood? Nope.
6) We have yet to discover a comfortable sofa bed that isn't ugly: recommendations are gratefully received. Upon request, we will put a queen sized mattress and platform in the room instead of the sofa, but it's really one or the other. It's summer season, rates are really low, maybe spring for two rooms?

Hope that helps.

I have stayed at Casa Cupula three times over two years and have always had a consistently terrific time. The service is outstanding--friendly and attentive. The rooms can be a tad quirky. We try to stay in the main building. The hotel is a short walk to the Blue Chairs Beach.
