My wife and I spent 10 days at the Hotel Irma. We booked it based on the favourable reviews of other travelers and we were not disappointed. The location is excellent - however with that being said it is on a hill (heart attack hill as one hotel guest mentioned) and after walking up and over to La Ropa beach (only a 10 minute or so walk up and over another major hill) or walking to town (another very pleasant 5 or 10 minute walk) you do get to appreciate your thigh and leg muscles a little bit more. On the walk to town there are numerous excellent small family restaurants who all make you feel like part of the family after a couple of visits. Certainly a highlight of our trip.

As for the hotel, they have an excellent pool area and a great little bar and apparently a good restaurant. Unfortunately, we didn't eat at the hotel but rather ate out at numerous of the nearby excellent restaurants. Our room was on the 5th floor so if one didn't get enough exercise walking up the hill to the hotel, the stairways to our room ensured the exercise quota was met. The room had fantastic views of the bay. The room itself was typical, older hotel room but our excellent maid (Santa) kept it spotless. Our shower was a bit dodgy at times with the hot water running our before the shower was finished but a lukewarm shower was OK as the weather was hot so a cooler shower didn't feel too bad. The front desk staff were wonderful - efficient, helpful and friendly. Would we go back - absolutely - we loved it there.

Room Tip: We were on the 5th floor, corner room 501. We loved to sleep with the window open but from time to...

The Hotel Irma.... what a great find! Eight of us spent 4 days at this wonderful hotel. Great rates. None of us had stayed there before but, for sure we will come back again and again. The rooms were clean, the pillows were a bit hard, The staff were very helpful and courtious and spoke very good English. The infinity pool is a great place to admire the view and meet others staying at the hotel. It's a great place to enjoy 2 for 1 happy hour drinks. The resturant food was reasonable and good. The spa was great a little place, pricy but enjoyable. The hotel sits on a hill side and cabs are available at the hotel entrance. 20 pesos, less than 2 dollars for your trip to town or other places. Air conditioned rooms, TV, hair dryers. Very good value.

Room Tip: Room #12 has a great balcony ended up being our meeting place.

We stayed based on the reviews. Staff are very nice & friendly, no question. Meals in the restaurant-very affordable & tasty. easy walk into town 7 you get to go up & down heart break hill daily! stairs everywhere so be fit & have a strong heart! liquor prices-the most expensive of all the places we ate at, but it didn't seem to deter many. old home week it seems, everyone seemed to know everyone & they all seemed to come back year after year. the pool was just the right temp. But, no one seemed to mention the different levels of rooms available. we got a crappy 1. yes, 2 beds-nice & hard & a shower big enough for at least 6 people at once! Would have been nice to have hot water for washing & showers! our TV had a problem that wasn't fixable 7 that was annoying! Too bad! No compensation on the rates-we'll tell the owner. otherwise, spot on with the rest of the reviews. And we're walkers1

Room Tip: Try for a room facing the ocean with a balcony-you get a great view of the pool area & Zihua har...

I've been wanting to stay here since I discovered it this year. I went to Zihuatanejo 2x this year already (it's only March, 2013). On my 2nd trip this year, I make sure I stay at Hotel Irma to see what everyone is raving about.

The restaurant is refreshing to hang out with a stunning view of Playa la Madera. It's great after our sweltering drive to the south. Great location, I really don't mind the uphill/downhill walk to town, it's good for you right?

Ok let me summarize the pros:
Great location
Clean rooms
Infinity pool - love it!
Laid back atmosphere, ZIH is not your party place after all
I like the restaurant, reasonably priced, friendly staff
Rooms are "ok" priced

the cons:
Dark rooms (our non-ocean view at least, but maybe other rooms are ok?)
Thin blankets (this may be a personal preference, so mileage varies)
they charge P250 for a lost beach towel (what???)
Crowded pool (by noonish or so, most chairs already are occupied)

What I found out, early in the morning (as early as 8am or 9am), people already lay down their beach towels on chairs strategically located. How would you feel about that? Then you're inclined to do the same right? You don't need anymore stress on your vacation.
By the time it gets warmer, the pool area is already 100% occupied with no chair/s to lay down.

The good thing is, if you're more adventurous, there's the beach and other beaches to visit in the vicinity, like Playa Las Gatas or Isla Ixtapa, or go to Barra de Potosi.

The 250 fee may be suited for smaller/B&B type places but on the places I've stayed here in Ixtapa, we didn't get a pre-set rule that we'll be charged if the towels don't come back.

Thin blankets - I guess I could have asked for a down or thicker blankets?

Overall, it's a nice place to stay if you just want a place by the beach, close to everything, etc. We had a great time, but maybe I'll try another similar place nearby, like Hotel Palacio or something.

If you're looking for quiet time this is the place to be. Very friendly staff, decent food, good value. Not a place for kids, nothing to do. No pool activities. No elevators but very good location, many restaurants and shopping within walking distance.

Room Tip: No elevators, ask for lower floor unless you don't mind a lot of stairs.
