“Wonderful view, decent hotel”
Reviewed 12 November 2006

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Irma for 5 days and 6 nights. The first night we were there we noticed that the water pressure in the shower was terrible. You had to wait for the water to get warm enough and then the pressure was barely there. We had a nice room right above the restaurant overlooking the bay and the pool but during most of our stay there were children in the pool screaming and playing loudly. There were no ice machines but you could buy some ice from the restaurant. The restaurant food was average but the staff was very nice.

Other than that, there are plenty of wonderful restaurants near the beach and there is a restaurant right next to the hotel called Kau-Kan that has AWESOME food!! The hotel is located where you can walk to the beach and its shops or downtown. The view of the beach from the room was beautiful and hearing the waves at night was great. Housekeeping did a great job of keeping the room clean and the hotel itself was very clean. It is definitely not a 4 star hotel with all the bells and whistles but the price for the hotel was good and that is what we got for our money.

The Hotel Irma, was a lovely clean hotel. We had requested an Oceanfront Room through the tour company, but apparently they didn't have access to these rooms. We ended up in a room so large we could have had a fiesta in it. It was spotlessly clean and the cleaning staff were terrific..very friendly. The pool area was great, although they have limited numbers of loungers. I would get up at 5- 6 am and sit in the pool area watching the sun come over the Bay..drinking my coffee (which left alot to be desired) and reading a book. But the setting was so fantastic I can forgive the coffee. The Restaurant was ok, nothing to write home about, however the restaurants in the town were so amazing, who wants to eat in the hotel anyway. There's a great little breakfast place just down the road called the Casa Cafe which had the best coffee in the town (Starbucks, I believe) and banana pancakes with fresh coconut syrup that was to die for, and I don't like pancakes!!

I highly recommend the Hotel..it really was great, and if I can find a room I will be back this winter

We stayed at the Irma for 4 nights in June, 2006. We had come down on a weeks' package to Ixtapa, but delayed our return so that we could travel in Michoacan for a couple of weeks, and then top off the holiday with a few days' beach time in Zihua.
We walked the beach and inspected several Zihua hotels before choosing the Irma, and we were glad we did. They had a package promotion going on - third night free, discount at the restaurant, 2 free breakfasts, welcome drink and glass of wine with dinner - a good deal.
You can't beat the view from the restaurant and bar, and the two pools were great. One is an infinity style, where you can hang on the edge and gaze out at the bay - lovely. No problems getting lounge chairs - no one is selfishly "reserving" chairs with towels as sometimes happens at resorts.
Ask to see the rooms before you choose one - some are less private than others. We got a lovely spacious renovated room with new air conditioner and vista of the bay. Spotlessly clean and simple, lovely Mexican colours, big bed with fun towel/hibiscus flower arrangment each day.
Quiet and peaceful, but friendly and relaxed. Desk staff professional and efficient - all staff very friendly.
Flexible - it was stinking hot in June and they kept the pools open after the official 8pm closing time so guests could bob around, chat and enjoy the evening.
Breakfast was excellent - eggs "al gusto", good coffee, etc. We were generally disappointed with lunch, though - salad with rotten lettuce, food cold when it shouldn't have been, especially when it was wasn't busy at lunch - definitely amateurs cooking at lunch time! We walked into town for our evening meal - it's a pleasant stroll.
Laundromat is a short walk down the hill - very resonably priced.
Staff will direct you.
I don't know if people speak English as we like to speak Spanish when in Mexico. The desk staff definitely do, as I heard them talk to other guests, and I believe it was Irma herself I spotted one afternoon, giving her restaurant staff English lessons.
I don't recommend swimming in the bay in front of the hotel - especially after any rain - didn't look clean. But take a boat to one of the nearby beaches like Las Gatas and enjoy.
We would definitely return here. Glad we found the Irma.

My husband and I spent a week at Hotel Irma in March. It was wonderful!! The view took my breath away, the rooms were clean, the pools nice and refreshing, and the staff friendly. Be sure to take advantage of their daily happy hour (5-7). We are definitely going back to Hotel Irma next year!! Can't think of a better place for the value. We liked the location...easy walk into town and also a quick trip to LaRopa. Thanks Hotel Irma!

A wonderful place!! Friendly staff, from hotel receptionists, to the wait staff, to the onderful maid service that left "towel animals" on the bed everyday.
The rooms were fine, with 2 beautiful pools which overlook the ocean. Walking distance to town and Playa Ropa.
I can't say enough good things about this hotel, except it was magnifico!

Hotel Irma surely deserves more than one star. True, it doesn't have spas, tennis courts, and all the other trimmings usually found in higher-rated hotels but it has everything we needed. And the location on a hillside overlooking Zihuatanejo Bay provides a lot more character and atmosphere than the "built-for-tourists" city of Ixtapa. But if you want to spend time in Ixtapa, it's only a $5 taxi ride away.
Most of the rooms overlook the bay and have a patio or balcony. They are relatively small but spotlessly clean (everything in the hotel was clean). The front desk and restaurant staff are friendly and almost all speak English. Plus there is a travel desk in the lobby manned by reps from three different travel agencies who will help you book many different types of outings. The restaurant is open-air and overlooks the pools and the bay. It is not 5-star but everything we tried was nicely done and delicious (try the waffle for breakfast).
Playa Madera beach down the hill from the hotel is not very attractive but Playa La Ropa is a 15-minute walk or $2 cab ride away and Las Gatas beach is across the bay and reached via a $3 ferry ride from the pier near downtown. Plus the hotel has two salt-water pools which were very nice.
Shopping and dining spots are within easy walking distance of the hotel. Downtown Zihautanejo is 15 minutes away with lots of shops in town and restaurants along Principle beach (Daniel's was excellent). And 5 to 10 minutes up the hill from the hotel will take you to The Bay Club, Puerto del Sol, and Il Mare - all very good (Il Mare is the best and of course, the most expensive).
In summary, for people who don't use or need all the fancy extras of a 5-star hotel and who want to get a feel for the culture of the area, you can't go wrong with Hotel Irma.
