The perfect spot. This trip was a compromise for us between my desire for solo travel in isolated regions of Honduras and Mardie's desire for something more civilized but definitely NOT of the all-inclusive genre. Treetops hit the perfect balance.

Jeffery and Magali are charming hosts and my chats with Magali helped my Spanish enormously. I also have a weakness for rescue dogs and was charmed by the eclectic selection here! I think it was the first time I've met a Chihuahua that I really liked.

We enjoyed eating at their beach bar/restaurant, as well as a delicious simple meal at the restaurant next door, run by an equally charming and hospitable Mexican family.

If you want peace, quiet, and sand between your toes all day this is the place.

Room Tip: We took cabin #1 as it has a bar fridge.

Jeff and Maggie strike the right balance between being always around and available when you need anything (a drink, Maggie's delicious guacamole, advice about which Playa Blanca beach restaurant to try) and blending in to the chill background vibe at Treetops so that you can truly relax and feel both isolated and at home. Highlights are Maggie's tiritas (the local ceviche of fish strips), the beach fire pit (ask Jeff to build an evening fire right after sunset), the sunset, walking way up the beach, and hanging out with Jeff and Maggie. Jeff has great stories about being an expat in Mexico, and Maggie is warm, energetic, and helpful with local food. My girlfriend and and I stayed for two nights before moving on to Las Azucenas on Playa La Ropa and Casa Cuitlateca high on the hill between Playa Madera and La Ropa. It was our first trip to Zihua, so we wanted to explore a few different locations and styles. Treetops was certainly the most memorable. It is the only place that offered a real getaway from crowds and schedules. Meals are served whenever you want them, it is quiet at night and in the morning, and the beach is practically empty (and deserted at night, perfect for checking out the bio-luminescence of the ocean, which is much brighter than the bay). If you are coming to Zihuatanejo it would be a big mistake to miss this place. Even if you are the type of traveler who loves opulent luxury, you should add a few days at Treetops to your itinerary before heading to the cushy resorts.

My girlfriend and I stayed in bungalow #1 for three nights over Christmas, and our friends stayed at one of the other bungalows. We could not have picked a better place!

Jeffrey and Magali welcomed us and made us feel at home in every way. One day, while out shopping for food at the local supermarket, we called them to see if we needed to pick up wood for the campfire. When we got back, the fire was already going on the beach and all we had to do was crack open a beer. The next day, our hosts got the coals ready on the grill so we could make carne asada for our tacos.

Whether you prefer swimming with dolphins in the ocean or taking a dip in the pool under the palm trees, at Treetops Bungalows relaxation is guaranteed. The cabins are charming and rustic -- a far cry from the large, soulless hotels of Ixtapa. (Be sure to sleep under the bed net, to avoid the hungry mosquitoes. Bug spray and long sleeves/pants are recommended.) The long secluded beaches only minutes from downtown Zihuatanejo make you feel like you are many miles away.

Thank you for making us feel welcome and creating a wonderful, relaxing experience!

We had a fantastic time here. My girlfriend and I stayed in what I believe was the smallest bungalow. Room was ample and there was space outside in the sand to hang out. The vibe at this place is fantastic. There are very few people there at any one time and it makes for a much better experience than the general impersonal atmosphere of most hotels.

My wife and I just returned from a 5-night stay at Treetops Bungalows….it was great!!! While we have been to numerous destinations outside the US, this was our first trip to Mexico. We were looking for a place outside of the typical resort setting, a little off the beaten path, but certainly with a few amenities. We found Treetops after several weeks of searching the web and talking with travel agents. We sent an email to the address on their website to ask a few questions. Jeffrey and Maggie responded quickly with answers and took the time to help set our expectations on what they have and don’t have at Treetops. In the end, we booked our stay several months in advance and started the countdown.

We arrived as scheduled and used tips provided by Jeffrey and Maggie to exit the airport and found a taxi they arranged for us. We arrived at Treetops about 5 minutes later and began a wonderful experience of relaxation, great food and fantastic company. We stayed in the penthouse bungalow and it was worth every penny. It was a large studio apartment, very clean and very comfortable. There was plenty of room for my wife and I to stretch out inside, relax in front of the TV or sit on the deck and listen to the waves.

Jeffrey and Maggie gave us privacy throughout the week, but whenever we saw them, they were always smiling and ready to chat, not to mention making sure our stay was going well. Jeffrey and Maggie helped us get into and out of town by arranging taxis and also giving us the local bus experience….which I have to say was quite fun! They recommended a few fun things to do in Zihuat and introduced us to another US couple staying at Treetops for several months. Maggie even invited my wife to a spinning class one morning, which turned out to help create a good bond between them.

The food….well, it was simply awesome! We ate most of our meals at Treetops and while the menu might feel a little limited by US standards, everything is prepared fresh in perfect proportions! We never went away from the table hungry. I never ran out of cold beer and my wife enjoyed a variety of tropical drinks.

If you’re looking for a place to really relax and don’t need the pomp & circumstance (or crowds) of a 5-star resort and don’t need to be in walking distance of nightlife and stores……head to Treetops!!! We are already starting to think about when we can go back…maybe even taking our two kids.

Jeffrey & Maggie – Thanks for a great time!!!

My wife just completed her MBA and wanted a place to decompress - no stimulating poolside stereos, obnoxious pool boys, loud mega resort type stuff, just someplace quite. Treetops more than met all of our expectations for exactly that. Peaceful, off the grid - and I mean really off the grid - no land line phones or WiFi here. Just the ocean, three dogs (whom we absolutely fell in love with - especially Bago (Bog-o), and the owners, Jeffery and Maggie - who take care of this gem meticulously. Jeffery and Maggie are pleasant, friendly and just fun to be around.

We stayed in the 'Penthouse' for our two week stay and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Outfitted with a small kitchen, comfortable furnishings, a patio with a wonderful view (hammock included - I spent a lot of time on that....) and a thatch roof that makes the room feel like 'Swiss Family Robinson' meets the 21st century. We loved it.

The food is excellent - Maggie is a wonderful cook and enjoys cooking for their guests. Everything is made to order - everything that we had was fresh made and delicious - save for the pizza which is frozen - but Maggie adds fresh ingredients to it that more than make up for it being frozen.

Jeffery and Maggie take extra care to make sure the property is clean and inviting - sweeping the path stones multiple times a day, Jeffery drags the sand with his quad and a small section of chain link fence to keep it fresh looking (I think he just enjoys riding around on the quad, too... :) ), and Maggie's dad comes in and rakes the sand giving it a groomed, landscaped affect once a week (or there abouts from what we could tell).

There are two palapas to sit under / next to while out on the beach, which provide welcome shade from the sun - it does get intense in this climate, so be sure to bring plenty of the right SPF.

Playa Larga is about a mile north and an enjoyable walk on the beach to get to. We were told that there are a couple of good restaurants there, but didn't get to any of them during our stay.

Playa Blanca is about a half hour taxi ride to the south and offers a variety of things to do - fishing, kayaking, and snorkeling amongst others. We went fishing (unfortunately we didn't catch anything...) but did enjoy having dolphins swimming next to our panga, jumping stingrays and a seeing a sea turtle.

Going into Zihuatanejo is a short taxi ride away - costs about 150 pesos each way, so have some extra cash on hand. Ixtapa is about half an hour away and costs about 200 pesos. Zihua is a lovely, quaint fishing village that has kept it's charm - Ixtapa is the mega resort destination of the two, yet still enjoyable for a short stay.

Some things to keep in mind when booking at Tree Tops... There are no cool, air conditioned rooms at Tree Tops - only fans to help keep the heat and humidity at bay. The Bungalows themselves appeared to be on the primitive side - but that's part of the allure, right? They offer all of the basic necessities - bed, roof, restroom facilities, but little else. Mind you, I'm not bashing them, just trying to give an honest critique of what we saw when we walked through them.

We read in one review a complaint about planes from the airport, which is right behind Tree Tops. Yes, planes do fly right over Tree Tops, but you hear them for maybe (underlined and italicized...) ten seconds. At most I think we heard six or seven planes in one day. Hardly worth a mention, but wanted to counter the complaint that we had read on another post.

Overall, we absolutely loved Tree Tops and would stay there again in a heartbeat. We have found our 'new' favorite place and town to travel to. Thanks Jeffery and Maggie. We miss you guys already!!!

Room Tip: If you're looking for comfort features, shoot for the penthouse.

My family of 5 recently had the opportunity to spend a week here. We started our trip to the area with a week at a luxurious all-inclusive that stimulated every sense, and kept the whole family busy. And then we spent the 2nd week of our trip at the Treehouse Bungalows. We had a truly wonderful experience there. The bungalows themselves were private and clean. The owners (Jeffrey and Maggie) made some adjustments to allow all 5 of us to sleep in the same bungalow, and it was a thrill for the kids to sleep in a loft that overlooked the ocean. The unti was cozy, comfortable, clean, and we set the bar high. The location itself was a big contrast to the all-inclusive resort. It was peaceful, and relaxing. The ocean was right there, and the waves soothed us to sleep each and every night. We used the peace and quiet to re-connect as a family spending some welcomed time playing games, throwing frisbees, playing in the sand, walking the beach, and reading. We were concerned about the undertow being too severe too safely swim. And so we did not swim, and it turned out we were okay with that. The bungalows are nestled in between tall palm trees. The shade combined with the breeze from the ocean meant we were a good 15-20 degrees cooler than at the other resort. But what really made our time her especial was the wonderful hospitality from Jeffrey and Maggie. They treated us like friends from the moment we first met. And the food Maggie prepared in the kitchen was remarkable. We ate like kings and queens for a mere fraction of what we spent our first week. When we left, our kids were near tears to say goodbye. We will be going back to Treetop Bungalows in the future, and we'll be bringing friends when we do. Thanks so much for the kindness and hospitality. If you like a more genuine experience from people who care, try this place.

Room Tip: All the bungalows face the ocean. The setting could be romantic but it worked well for our family as...
