Yes, my fellow intrepid travelers, there IS a still a hidden paradise in Zihuatanejo, a place to get away from it all: unique, rustic, historic, charming and affordable, with fabulous views and some of the best swimming, snorkeling and seafood restaurants within steps of the property. Anyone who is familiar with Zihuatanejo has heard of Owen Lee and his space on the point – or far end – of Las Gatas beach. The Hotel California, Owen’s own hand-made home and the bungalows in their various incarnations are an integral part of Zihuatanejo’s history.
We spent the night at this property in November 2012 and it was a lovely romantic experience. Once the last panga (ferry) leaves at around 6 p.m., all the restaurants on Las Gatas close, the beach is empty and you are masters of your universe. The sun sets, the stars come out and you may imagine yourselves as castaways on a desert island (albeit with running water and electricity, but who’s nitpicking?). The panoramic view of Zihua Bay is spectacular and it is soothingly quiet, save for the waves that lull you to a deep and restful sleep.
There are many restaurants to choose from on Las Gatas Beach and/or you can bring your own supplies to cook your meals. Owen can arrange for a water taxi to take you to and from the property at a reasonable rate. In short, stay here before the last bastion of Zihua wilderness disappears. Oh, and did I mention how affordable it is? Very. Such a deal!

If you are tired of the old tourist resort destination and long for the real tropical paradise of your favorite adventure childhood novel, this is the place for you... out of the way and only minutes by boat from the main town of Zihuatanejo, it will provide all the R&R you crave and need in a rustic beach setting. No phones, no roads, no internet... during the day, the beach is crowded with tourist and day visitors, after sunset, the entire beach is deserted leaving you and your companions entirely alone to enjoy the warm waters and sand and the only noise you'll hear will be the surf pounding on the rocks steps away from your sleeping quarters. I recommend this place to young and middle age adults that really enjoy nature and are not afraid of spending time in a place that is surrounded by it. You won't find hot water showers nor air conditioned rooms, it's a step up from camping in the beach, but what this experience will do for your soul will stay with you forever...
