Once a very small town in ruins that has been discovered for better or worse. I lived there for four years in the nineties in a house built in the 1700's Things changed slowly. The local eateries grew and became more numerous as the town grew from six hundred to a thousand. Many ex-pats, Swiss, Italian, German, and so forth lived there to do art or have small restaurants or stores. The tourist trade grew rapidly. The Huitchol see it as religious center where the sun was born. Catholics have a cathedral there where every October thousands upon thousands come there to worship. Today the tourist effect is detracting for the quaintness and the way it used to be, simple and quiet is being disturbed by ATVs and boisterous tourists. Hollywood has found the place and makes movies there. Mexico City and Monterey tourists defend on the town in droves and the charm is wearing off but it is still worth the effort to go there. I still ;one the place, but then I know a lot of the locals who are my friends.

A very nice place hidden in the desert. The cobblestone road winding up the mountain and the narrow tunnel helps keep it isolated. It was cold but beautiful in this town. We had no TV, cell phone service or central heat but it was nice.

Being there made me wonder about how the town was a hundred years ago when was the biggest town in the area, when there was a full population and the place was working and people have a different life, the graveyard, the church, the food, i like the place.

Hill tops in Mexico can be very enticing. Real de Catorce is a wonderfull town to visit. It takes a bit of work to get there but once there it is a quite town with views of the surrounding hills (10,000 feet). A very peaceful place to get away.

My friend drove me there, she is Mexican and has done a great amount of experimental drugs for her artistic endeavours. The place was magical without the drugs, lots of hippies living there.

I had severe altitude sickness because it is high up in the mountains, an old town from the 16th century that used to be a mining town. I can almost feel the past spirits around me, and I was completely at peace with myself there.
I was converted to believe that there are magical places after a visit to Real De Catorce.
