We did this tour to get the experience while saving money. The tour guides and drivers are very professional, billingual (Spanish and English), and they come pick you up and drop you off directly at your hotel. You can make reservations easily online at www.tequilatours.com.mx and they will email you back to reconfirm the reservation. If your hotel isn't listed, give them a call and they will change that.
The bus was comfortable, the drive isn't very long and seeing the agave fields and seeing how the farmers harvest the "pineapple" was very interesting. Then the little town of tequila arround the main square is very cute, especially the road that has been re-made by the Jose Cuervo Destillery. The people who give you the tour at the destillery are very nice and you get two free margaritas. After the destillery tour, you have time for lunch in the city - we recommend going to the market, located behind the church for inexpensive and delicious local food.

The town of Tequila was worth the trip alone. Clean, very friendly and picturesque, we spent several hours walking around - sampled and shopped for tequila. We hired a driver and did a day trip from the coast. The many miles of blue agave fields were spectacular. We visited a small local tequilleria, had an extensive tour and sampled more tequila. A definite "must" if travelling this part of Mexico.

This is a great way to spend the better part of a day while visiting Guadalajara. We made arrangements easily through our regular waiter at the hotel (I'm pretty sure he gets a commission, which is just fine). We were picked up as promised and taken to meet the other tour members. Our group had ten folk, all of us Spanish speakers so we were spared having to hear everything in two languages. Tequila is actually a city, one of the few places where tequila is made (similar stuff is made elsewhere, but can't be called tequila if it's not subject to the rigorous controls ... like champagne). On the way, the tour guide gave a lot of information about the history of tequila in Mexico and the place it occupies in the culture and economy, as well as describing some of the places we were passing. Before reaching the city, there was a stop in an agave field, where the process of harvesting the plant was explained and demonstrated. Then on to Tequila and the "Mundo Cuervo" (the Cuervo brand of tequila being the sponsor of the tour). Upon arrival at the Distillery we were offered margaritas and time to wander around before the 1 hour tour started. The tour takes you step by step through the process of making tequila in its various forms and I appreciated learning enough to make good decisions about what kind of tequila to buy for what purpose. After the tour, there was time for lunch (on your own) and a little more shopping. A small discount is offered tour members for shopping in Cuervo's shop, but there are lots of others nearby. Our lunch at the recommended restaurant (10% discount) was fine. One tip about buying tickets: if you book through your hotel you will likely be given a ticket in exchange for a 50 peso deposit. Be sure you are clear about how much more you have to pay. At this writing, the advertised price of the tour if booked in advance is 300 pesos, so the balance owing would be 250. But our guide first said we owed 300 more, that the total price was 350. I'm not sure if this was an attempted scam or just a misunderstanding, but she backed off quickly when we repeated what we had been told at the hotel. This was a minor thing, but worth watching out for.

Visited one of the tequila plants in this city, and it was awesome! Our tour guide was very informational and educated in the entire production of the Agave plants. From the fermentation to the distillation of the product, to of course TASTING the tequila, the tour is a must see! My family and I are definitely glad that we made the long drive to visit this city!!
