We decided to splurge and stayed here for three days last summer. We enjoyed our time there very much. They were extremely attentive and helpful. They helped us arrange some excursions, and suggested places to dine. The service was impeccable; our room was clean, cozy, comfortable, and beautiful.

We had a great experience, the staff was gracious, professional, and very caring.

It is out of the way, but it was a great place to retreat during the afternoon rains.

I brought my husband to Guadalajara to visit the Tequila Trail for a 50th birthday surprise. While all aspects of our trip were really wonderful, the highlight was our time at Villa Ganz.

Everything about our experience at Villa Ganz was perfection, starting www.mexicoboutiquehotels.com, where we booked the property. Their English was impeccable, and they were highly responsive. They went above and beyond the call of duty by continually asking "what else can we do for you?" I asked them for suggestions regarding dining and tour guides and they offered many which all proved to be very good. They even asked if this was a special occasion. I explained it was my husband's 50th birthday, and so they arranged for a small cake and balloon bouquet to be in our room! They did all this without me asking for it, and without charging me!

While at the hotel our expectations were also constantly surpassed. Some of these were:

* Breakfast was was a wonderful spread with lots of fresh fruit, juice, fresh pastries, eggs to order and more, served in the beautiful garden, or where ever we wanted it.

* They have free internet and a laptop in the lobby for free guest usage.

* Every time we walked past the front desk there was some treat available for guests (wine, snacks, lemonade, etc).

* As we left for our day of tequila tasting they handed our guide a bag full of ice cold bottled waters for the journey!

We loved our room as well. We felt at home where ever we were on the property and felt very well taken care of while there. While the price of our room might be high for Mexico ($190 US/night), I felt we got fantastic value and I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a boutique hotel in the area.

My husband and I travel frequently to Guadalajara on working trips and have always stayed at the Fiesta Americana as that was our recommendation from a friend who lives nearby. We've always been let down by that hotel for it's general lack of character. For example it's always bothered me that you cannot control the room's temperature or open the windows. This time we wanted a more personal, boutique style experience and our friend found Villa Ganz for us. From the moment we stepped into the door we were graciously welcomed to the hotel and offered a drink. From the lobby you could view the beautiful back garden. Upon entering our room we were so happy to find a large terrace that looks onto the garden. The tall ceilings, assortment of candles and small lights all created a wonderful ambiance. The bedding was superior, the bathroom was very clean and the bathtub was large. The water pressure was good and the staff was perfectly attentive yet respectful of our privacy. What a wonderful find - beautifully decorated and on a street with a good bookstore and a delicious Mexican bakery. Highly recommended even at the risk of us not getting a room when we come again...

  • Liked — Relaxation, peaceful hotel

I can certainly echo those praising the Villa Ganz’s old world charm, relaxing ambience, antique-filled rooms, fresh flowers, and lovely gardens but I disagree with criticism of the location. The Minerva/Chapultepec neighborhood is easy walking distance to numerous restaurants, shops and sights, including the Expiatory Temple and amazing Orozco murals at the University. Indeed, we chose the Villa because it’s away from the bustle of downtown.

What really gives this boutique a hotel an edge is owner Sally Rangel. A total professional, Ms. Rangel is as savvy as she is personable and attractive and truly understands the meaning of “attention to detail.” (Indeed, how many hotel owners are on site every day?) Ms. Rangel and her able staff, in particular Armando and Bernie, anticipated our every need and politely answered questions they surely heard every day. We never passed the front desk without being asked if we wanted a bottle of water or a taxi and upon return were offered a complimentary glass of wine. The staff was frank in their response to queries about restaurants, telling us where to go and, more importantly, what places to avoid.

Our weekend package included a dinner prepared by the Villa’s chef who worked closely with us in planning the menu and prepared exactly what we requested with style and beautiful presentation. Served in the Villa’s subtropical garden, it was one of our best meals in Guadalajara. That’s saying a lot in a city with an abundance of excellent eateries. Our package also promised an evening at the Ballet Folklorico, and when the performance was cancelled Ms. Rangel countered with a bottle of fine French champagne one night and a bottle of excellent tequila another. In fact, there seemed to be a surprise every evening with turn-down service, and the kitchen happily prepared sandwiches for our flight home. Last but not least, when American Airlines caused us to miss our flight to Guadalajara and our first night at the Villa, Ms. Rangel generously comped the suite for that evening. When you factor in the reasonable rates, the Villa Ganz experience is almost impossible to beat.

My recent stay was in a Grand Mater suite (#14) overlooking the much commented upon garden, for 4 nights. Whilst not expensive on the international stage (US$250/nt), it is up there for Guadalajara, so expectations can run high. This small (10 rooms) hotel does indeed offer an oasis of calm in the middle of the city, and the service is indeed friendly, efficient and discrete. Suggestions for restaurants, bars etc were spot on.
Having acknowledged all that, however, the term "luxury" still does not spring to mind. Luxury does not normally accept broken office chairs doubling as a work area chair, peeling plaster in the bathroom, a cheap and tatty metal frame sofa bed in the lounge area of the room, a TV with a small monitor size screen, a leaking washbasin and squeaking wardrobe sliding doors. All of the maintenance related issues are obviously seen and cleaned by housekeeping every day, yet not reported.
What the hotel does have though is charm and character in abundance, which put the faults into some perspective.
Would I stay here again? Almost certainly as it is an escape from standardised corporate hotels. Could it be improved? Most certainly, laurels should not be rested upon.

Dear Mr. Hong Kong Memeber:

Thank you very much for your comments.

Definetly is very important for us to know all the little details you mentioned you found in room # 14 during your stay at Villa Ganz, so we can improve and arrange any damage or faults that the rooms, the amenities and the hotel would have.

As one of the owners of the hotel, I appologize for the inconvenience, and really hope you give us the opportunity to have you as our very special guest in your next visit.

Most of the "details" have been fixed by now.

Best regards

A real find. My room was spacious and full of character -- terracotta floors, antique furniture, beveled glass door off a comfortably furnished terrace. Linens and towels were fresh and immaculate, and the bed and pillows were very comfortable. Common areas of the hotel are lovely, elegant without being pretentious. The small garden provides a welcome sense of space -- Villa Ganz is squeezed into a small urban plot -- and lushness, and the cozy gardenside bar had a welcoming fire going in the evenings. Location was great: although the historical center of town would be a bit of a long walk, calling a cab was easy. More importantly for me, there were several good restaurants within walking distance, as well as convenience stores and drugstores (my bag did not arrive with me, so these were particularly welcome). Service was warm and friendly without being intrusive; the young people at the front desk called cabs for us, recommended restaurants and made reservations, and helped me track down my lost luggage. I'd come back to Guadalajara just to stay at Villa Ganz again!

From the moment we arrived we felt the warmth and charm of the place. The decor and architecture of the hotel were inviting the enough, with beautiful candles and amazing Mexican antiques. Every detail of the place was carefully and lovingly thought out with the comfort of guests in mind. The rooms were very charming. The bed was unbelievably comfortable with very high quality bedding. The shower was also fantastic. There were a wide variety of Spanish and English television channels on the small color television. However, true character of the hotel came from the wonderful staff who took care of our every need. Sally, Juan Manuel, Alex, Eric, Rocio, and Veli were at efficient, friendly, and informative. Although we speak Spanish, I heard them communicating very well in English with other guests.

Passing through the lobby, we were always offered a drink. Who can turn down a delicious glass of white wine after a long day of shopping? Sitting out by the fire on the patio, we sipped tequila and wine before bedtime. The fireplace is 5 feet tall, and the entire back patio is decorated with beautiful candles. There are comfortable chairs and a sofa as well as a fantastic antique coffee table made from a 4 inch thick antique door. The ambience is simply not re-creatable. It could not have been more romantic and relaxing.

One of the definite highlights of the trip was our in-room massage from Maru. She had a very gentle demeanor but some of the strongest hands I've ever felt. She knew exactly where my sore spots were, and was able to work them very effectively. I felt so relaxed and rejuvenated after the massage. We couldn't leave without having another one, so we called her back two nights later! The price was extremely reasonable, and she even went over time to give us her best treatment.

The hotel location is in a charming residential area, close enough to the sights, but just far enough removed that you don't feel like you're in the center of a large city. On Sundays they close down our Avenida Vallarta for walking and biking. We cruised all the way down to the Expiatorio! There are plenty of things to do near the hotel, but one should probably take a taxi to go to the center.

Another highlight of the trip was our excursion to the town of Tequila. Our tour guide, Melchor, was fantastic! He was a walking encyclopedia, with a working knowledge of Guadalajara and the surrounding areas. He helped us with our Spanish. He helped us with all our bags and equipment. In general, he was just a great guy and a gentleman. We liked him so much, that we invited him along with us the following day to go shopping in Tlaquepaque.

We had breakfast every day either in the garden or in the covered patio. The mornings that were cooler, the staff offered to make a fire in the enormous fireplace. The breakfast was excellent. We had a large selection of delicious fresh fruits as well as a basket of fresh pastries. The coffee and juices were also excellent. There is an à la cart menu which we only from one time. We shared in order of chilequiles one morning which were delightful.

The surrounding area has a wide selection of restaurants. Our first night we went to a place called Nude. The ambience was not Mexican, to say the least. We felt like we were at an ultra-modern restaurant in Los Angeles. The food was supposedly "fusion," but was unimaginative and not that great tasting, especially for the price. Our favorite restaurant in the area was Kamillo's 333. As soon as you sit down, they give you a plate of grilled baby onions and fresh radishes, as well as fresh chips and salsa and a bean-based soup. You almost don't need to order a meal. I would recommend trying the queso fundido. Get this baked cheese dish with chorizo and mushrooms. Also excellent was the karne en su jugo, their specialty.

Overall, I would highly recommend that Villa Ganz. We hope to return there very soon.
