“Best Lodging EVER”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 September 2008

We stayed at Villa Ganz for two nights and were exceptionally impressed by every aspect of this property. We are frequent travelers who have stayed in fine (and not so fine) accommodations in Mexico and in many other countries, but Villa Ganz certainly set a new standard in service, amenities, location, and staff attention and professionalism.

In addition to the fact that Villa Ganz is centrally located within walking distance of banks, restaurants, bookstores, cafes, and other sites, this property stands out because from the moment you arrive, you are treated with exceptional professionalism and authentic warmth. The staff are truly knowledgeable about the property, about the city, and what it has to offer, and are actively seeking ways throughout your stay to make your time with them pleasant and memorable.

The property is clean, charming, and each of the rooms is spacious. The garden is beautiful and the evening is a particularly special time to enjoy Villa Ganz, as candles are lit inside and out at 8 pm. This is a great time to sip wine, tea, or coffee or have a quiet conversation in the garden.

The property also has a private chef on site who will prepare dinner at your request, and while Guadalajara boasts a number of restaurants that are of fine quality, the chef made a wonderful cream of basil soup-- unexpected and delicious--among other delicacies.

We recommend this hotel without reservations and with the highest praise.

  • Liked — The exceptional service and comfort.

Villa Ganz is a gem of a find. Not knowing Guadalajara, we sure lucked out on the location. It is safe, upscale and within walking distance to lots of great restaurants (we particularly enjoyed Cocina 88 and El Sacramonte). We have 2 children ages 13 & 15, so were unsure if the room size, beds and atmosphere would be conducive. It would not be a place for very young children as indeed it is a small boutique hotel and guests, I'm sure, appreciate the calm, serene atmosphere. Our children are both small, so the fold out sofa bed in the sitting room of the suite worked fine. Our king bed was very comfortable and the linens/pillows were really nice. Room #14 overlooks the rear garden which is lovely and quiet. The staff were VERY accommodating, always going the extra mile to satisfy our requests (drivers, tours, suggestions for kid-friendly activities, etc).
We especially recommend the Tapitio double decker bus tour...a great way for an overview of the city. You can get on and off and even take in Tlaquepaque in the same day. We hired a driver to take us to Lake Chapala and Ajijic (don't bother). Wish we had been there on a Sat or Sun to take in a futbol game, or a performance in the opera house. Weekends would also be nice to rent a bicycle on the pedestrian only boulevard.
We highly recommend Villa Ganz...Sally Rangin and her staff, Carina, Manuel, Alan, Ivan and especially Armando who helped customize our stay. As far as the previous comment about slow internet in the rooms, we had a laptop with us, and had no problem whatsoever.

We arrived to Guadalajara with little knowledge of the history, where we were staying or what we should see and do. We typically research the heck of where we are traveling and have a basic understanding of how we want the trip to play out, but this was not the case for our trip to Guadalajara. Our plan was to take a vacation to Mexico and spend the first few days exploring the culture and city life of Guadalajara and then hop a flight to spend the remainder days relaxing on the beach of Zihuatanejo.

When we arrived to Villa Ganz, we were happy to discover that the hotel is located in a charming neighborhood, full of fun eclectic restaurants and shops. Villa Ganz, like most of the hotels and restaurants in the district is an old restored villa. We were greeted with a glass of fresh fruit water and four smiling employes that were eagerly awaiting our arrival. After explaining that we had little idea of what to do for the next three days, the manager quickly responded with recommendations of places we had to see and restaurants that we would enjoy.

If you are in the mood for a nice wood-fire pizza and pasta, we highly recommend the Osteria 10 for lunch. Casa Fuerte was also a great place to have lunch with live music, tasty faijias, and great margaritas (try the tamarindo flavored margarita). For dinner, although both touristy, we loved Cucina 88 and Santa Coyote. Both restaurants are old restored mansions that have amazing ambiance and service. At Cucina 88, the waiter will actually escort you to the fish room or wine room so you can physically pick out what you would like to eat and drink. Santa Coyote is an experience in itself where you will have the opportunity to see live dancing, have homemade salsa prepared at your table, and you can even have a live mariachi band preform at your table for a pretty penny of $20.00 per song. We sadly found out about the set rate after requesting 2 songs.

When we were not eating and drinking, we were visiting the shopping town of Tlaquepaque, where you can buy typical mexican gifts, art and food. We also visited the Mercato Libertad and spent hours on Sunday walking down the street adjacent to the hotel that they close down for pedestrians and bikers on Sunday from 8-2pm.

On Monday, we hired a private driver to escort us to the city of Tequila where we had arranged a tour at Herradura. The short 40 min. drive was worth the long and interesting tour of how they make tequila, followed by a tasting of five different tequilas.

During the night, we actually saw a movie at the mall, went to folklore ballet at the old Theater, and danced at night club that is right down the street from Villa Ganz.

Villa Ganz proved to be a comfortable hotel that provided us with great ideas and recommendations of things we should do during our stay. We had a beautiful room, always felt safe walking around even during the night, and walked away feeling that Guadalajara has the most friendly people.

Other than the slow internet connection and a few mosquitos that found us while we were playing chess in the garden room at the hotel, we had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend Villa Ganz to all travelers who are interested in planning a trip to Guadalajara.

We decided to splurge and stayed here for three days last summer. We enjoyed our time there very much. They were extremely attentive and helpful. They helped us arrange some excursions, and suggested places to dine. The service was impeccable; our room was clean, cozy, comfortable, and beautiful.

We had a great experience, the staff was gracious, professional, and very caring.

It is out of the way, but it was a great place to retreat during the afternoon rains.

  • Liked — Beautiful and comfortable. The staff was amazing.

I brought my husband to Guadalajara to visit the Tequila Trail for a 50th birthday surprise. While all aspects of our trip were really wonderful, the highlight was our time at Villa Ganz.

Everything about our experience at Villa Ganz was perfection, starting www.mexicoboutiquehotels.com, where we booked the property. Their English was impeccable, and they were highly responsive. They went above and beyond the call of duty by continually asking "what else can we do for you?" I asked them for suggestions regarding dining and tour guides and they offered many which all proved to be very good. They even asked if this was a special occasion. I explained it was my husband's 50th birthday, and so they arranged for a small cake and balloon bouquet to be in our room! They did all this without me asking for it, and without charging me!

While at the hotel our expectations were also constantly surpassed. Some of these were:

* Breakfast was was a wonderful spread with lots of fresh fruit, juice, fresh pastries, eggs to order and more, served in the beautiful garden, or where ever we wanted it.

* They have free internet and a laptop in the lobby for free guest usage.

* Every time we walked past the front desk there was some treat available for guests (wine, snacks, lemonade, etc).

* As we left for our day of tequila tasting they handed our guide a bag full of ice cold bottled waters for the journey!

We loved our room as well. We felt at home where ever we were on the property and felt very well taken care of while there. While the price of our room might be high for Mexico ($190 US/night), I felt we got fantastic value and I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a boutique hotel in the area.

My husband and I travel frequently to Guadalajara on working trips and have always stayed at the Fiesta Americana as that was our recommendation from a friend who lives nearby. We've always been let down by that hotel for it's general lack of character. For example it's always bothered me that you cannot control the room's temperature or open the windows. This time we wanted a more personal, boutique style experience and our friend found Villa Ganz for us. From the moment we stepped into the door we were graciously welcomed to the hotel and offered a drink. From the lobby you could view the beautiful back garden. Upon entering our room we were so happy to find a large terrace that looks onto the garden. The tall ceilings, assortment of candles and small lights all created a wonderful ambiance. The bedding was superior, the bathroom was very clean and the bathtub was large. The water pressure was good and the staff was perfectly attentive yet respectful of our privacy. What a wonderful find - beautifully decorated and on a street with a good bookstore and a delicious Mexican bakery. Highly recommended even at the risk of us not getting a room when we come again...

  • Liked — Relaxation, peaceful hotel
  • Disliked — Only 9 rooms so it may be difficult to book in the future.
