We so much enjoyed out week's stay at Villa Ganz. We'd never been there before so we were hopeful it would be as nice as the website made it look. Well, it was much better than we expected. We loved our room. The room was nicely decorated and had a comfortable bed and a beautiful bathroom. The hotel is quiet and we slept well every night and during afternoon naps. The hotel grounds are beautiful, quiet and calming. We sat in the garden every morning for breakfast and enjoyed the comfortable, candlelit patio in the evenings. Our days included walks to the theater and shopping areas. When we'd return we received a refreshing glass of fresh juice in the afternoons, or a glass of wine and food morsels in the evening. The last thing I'd like to share is how wonderful the staff is. When we had questions about a theater event or a restaurant they gave us their recommendations and then made reservations for us and arranged a taxi too. They even sent someone out to the theater to pick up our tickets for the evening's concert. It was all so easy, relaxing and fun. Although the vacation is over and it's been back to work for a week, it makes me smile to think back on what a great time we had.

We had read about Villa Ganz in some travel publications and the reviews were so great that we decided to try it on our next trip to Guadalajara.

My husband and I arrived and while checking in immediately we were giving a cold refreshments. The staff was amazing, very polite and ready to help. Our room was so comfortable, the bed, the sheets, the bathroom every single detail was thought of and they made us feel like royalty.

The general manager, Sally Rangel, was simply extraordinary. She arranged for us a guided trip to Tequila, about one hour from Guadalajara. Every single detail was taken care of. Sally never made us feel as she just was "doing her job", she is genuine and she really wants her guests to have the best time ever.

The breakfasts were always delicious, we really enjoyed the garden and terrasse, where we had breakfast every morning. At night it was really nice to relax after a long day in the terrasse by the fire with a drink.

The publications where we read about Villa Ganz did not lie, this has to be one of the best hotels in Mexico.

Villa Ganz has a lot going for it. The hotel is small, quiet, and in a safe neighborhood. The decor is cleverly executed, in that the furnishings are inexpensive but arranged in a manner which exudes charm and elegance. For instance, many of the items could be found in a secondhand store, The pictures are in old frames, and some are taken from magazines. The "oriental" rugs are faux. Still, over-all, the result is attractive. The house itself is very nice, and in good condition. The draperies in #13 were made from a very handsome fabric, and the kingsize bed was very comfortable. The bed linens were crisply pressed and the comforter was lightweight yet warm.
Everything said about the service here is true. The young group who man the desk are wonderful. They can't do enough for you. I don't know when I have had better and friendlier service at a hotel.
Because we were there from Dec. 1 - 5, it was quite cool in the morning at breakfast. There are only 2 tables in the little breakfast room. The others are outside on the covered patio, and they are in heavy shade. Since the 2 tables were occupied every morning but one, we sat outside and it was cold with a sweater on. If you go in the winter, bring a lightweight coat. Once the overhead heater gets going, it is warmer, but that takes a while. I'm sure that it is just fine outside for most months of the year, however. Our sweet rolls were VERY sweet. They all had a lot of chocolate or sugar. Since my husband cannot eat sugar, it was a problem. The second morning we asked for something without sugar coating, and they produced croissants. I think they actually went out to get them, which impressed us a lot. However, the next morning the sweet rolls were back again. Two restaurants we liked a lot for dinner were Cocina 88 on Vallarta, a 5 block walk, and Corazon de Alcachofor. For lunch in the historic area downtown, we discovered La Rin Conada, where I had delicious fresh fish served by Ricardo, who lived in the USA for a long time and is fluent in English. They had a buffet there which started at 2 p.m. for 60 pesos. It looked pretty good, and is certainly a bargain. This restaurant is in a lovely building near the tourist office, which is behind the theater. It is at 86 Morelos. One thing we really liked was the Tapatio Tour, a hop on and off bus with an open air deck on top. It was very reasonable and a wonderful way to see the city sights and the local scene.

Villa Ganz is extraordinary, from the ease and helpfulness of the reservation process all the way through the stay at this tastefully refurbished mansion, with its beautiful lobby, room and garden area. As owners of waterfront rental cottages on Cape Cod, we appreciate what goes into making guests' stays memorable. The reviews on TripAdvisor convinced us that this would be the case at Villa Ganz.

From the greeting by owner Sally Rangel, whose graciousness is unmatched in our travels, to the many, small attentions given us over and over by the attentive staff, we found ourselves feeling very much at home. Co-owner Clix Kalkenkamp proudly talked of his experience refurbishing the old mansion, and showed us photos of bathrooms that he had carefully researched so that Villa Ganz would have truly exceptional bathrooms. His care with the workmanship and attention to architectural detail shows everywhere. Sally's eye for the decor is everywhere evident.

While we didn't see Samantha Brown's show on Villa Ganz, we stayed in the Grand Master Suite, just as she did, and were bowled over by the amenities and loving attention to detail in the inn's Mexican decor, the room's wonderful large tub, the top-of-the-line, spa-quality hair and body products, luxurious bed linens, wide-screen in-room TV (which we hadn't expected), and small balcony looking onto the garden. Even the lighting, the high, vaulted brick ceiling and the leaded glass windows bear mention.

For our visit to Tequila country, and a fine tour of the Herrradura tequila facility, inn-recommended guide Senor Melchor ("Mel") was absolutely wonderful. A great conversationist and mine of information, he is clearly well respected by the hotel staff and the Herradura people as well. We enjoyed his banter and behind-the-scenes knowledge about Guadalajara and the area. We recommend him highly.

The location is walking distance to some great restaurants (like Sacromonte) and clubs, and next door to the famous Guadalajara bakery El Globo. An amazing arrray of Mexican baked goods as well as the chance to watch the young baker at work was really interesting -- even more so when he gave us free samples! Just another example of how lovely the people in Guadalajara are! (You're also not surrounded by scores of other Americans, which is, in our book, a plus to a more natural experience of an area.)

We were also within a short walk from the great Saturday flea market, an interesting, fun way to relax in the morning. A walk to the Centro Historico is much more rigorous, and we sometimes found directions from people incorrect on the actual distance to places. Once there, however, we visited, among other things, the fabulous Orozco exhibit at one of the museums, the beautiful Cathedral, and the largest flea market in Mexico. Wow! Guadalajara is a photographer's paradise.

Again, as rental cottage owners who are in the business of trying to please all kinds of people, who bring all kinds of mental baggage with them on their vacations, we know the difficulty of remaining consistenty gracious. The owners are just such people, who both make you feel as if you are in their home. Every one of the staff honestly seemed to feel the same way (not the forced, formal graciousness you sometimes find in your travels).

I've left out a lot, but we just got back late last night (from the second part of our trip in Puerto Vallarta -- another cup of tea entirely!).

Thanksgiving week at Villa Ganz -- a great memory!

We chose Villa ganz after we saw Samantha Brown visit, and give it rave reviews...we made the right choce.

We were celebrating our 23rd anniversary, and I wanted to make this trip very special. Sally Rangel was all to happy to help with every detail. Upon arrival in our room we had a beautiful flower arrangement along with fresh fruit and an excellent bottle of tequila to enjoy. Our room was perfect; spacious, relaxing, beautiful, filled with old world charm and very romantic. All of the comforts one would would expect, and more.

This was just the beginning! Prior to the trip, Sally and I communicated via e-mail to set up several day trips including a very unusual day of culinary exploration and education.

Sally recommended a private tour guide for Tequila. This one on one time allowed us to avoid the big tour bus crowds, and to take the time to see every detail of the distilleries. Our guide took us to out of the way places where we walked some distilleries unaccompanied, and then introduced us to one of his favorite places to grab lunch, high on a hill, overlooking the valley of Tequila. On separate day trips he took us on walking tours of the historic district, including the famous murals by Jose Clemente, and then to see Tlaquepaque. We were pleased to spend time with our guide who has in depth knowledge of the area's history; he is an outstanding guide.

Sally really out-did herself when she set up a morning at the market with Chef Gabrielle; We visited the local produce market and shopped for and created the evening's dinner menu. Chef Gabrielle would return to the Hotel later in the day to cook with Greg, and share his culinary skills. This is something that we had never done before, and although the entire trip was excellent, this was the highlight of our stay in Guadalajara. For those who love food and love to cook, this is a must!!

Sally Rangel and her staff are outstanding! We had a fantastic time and hope to return with friends to enjoy more time with Sally, Sr. Melchor and Chef Gabrielle.
