“One of Our Favorites”
Reviewed 25 August 2014

Really enjoyed walking through his Diego's childhood home which boasts so many of his works and a few rooms of furnishings from the era as well. There is quite a variety of his styles included in the collection and of course, photos of him and Freda Kahlo. Certainly worth seeing if you are in Guanajuato. Price is right (20 pesos).

“If you are in Guanahuato you really must stop here”

Just seeing all his work displayed here is worth the 20 pesos by itself. I can't believe how many pieces they have.

“Great art, old and new”
Reviewed 10 August 2014

Wonderful Rivera pieces from different periods of his life and in genres generally less typical of his work, such as landscapes and portraits, plus portraits of him and Frieda Kahlo by friends. Also some superb exhibits of current art, including brilliant and disturbing surrealist oil paintings depicting the alienation of modern life.

“More Than Just Calla Lillies . . .”
Reviewed 31 July 2014

A womanizer, a communist sympathizer, and a masterful painter . . . all traits that D. Rivera managed to embody is his paintings throughout his life. The museum that houses some of D.R.s paintings here is a room-after-room arrangement of a two story affair with a good sampling of his works.

I think my favorites of his paintings contain snipits of early campesino life, the simple Mexican folksiness he was so good at illustrating and sharing in his paintings. Some of the exhibits will give you a better idea of the driving forces for this painter. The history of his life and his sometimes explosive relationship with F. Kahlo is a tale good enough for a Hollywood movie. Oh. That's right. They did make a movie of his life.

Regardless, when you have had your fill of taking pictures of picturesque cobblestone streets, quaint fountain sporting plazas, and political monuments, take a break from the street and step inside a world of canvas and oil pictures; paintings that were created by a master of a recent time. It's easy to become a D.R. fan if you aren't influenced by the not so desirable facets of his personal life.
