I chose to stay here rather than downtown for the Cervantina. Taxis and buses to and from the city center were readily available and the Ex-Hacienda San Gabriel de Barrera with its colonial mansion and gardens was at the door. As a retired Spanish teacher, it was the first time I was at liberty to go to the Cervantina and it was one of the most exciting events I had ever attended.
I saw plays and heard music and saw street performances and enjoyed a peaceful and interesting city where everyone seemed to be in the streets but no one was discourteous.

Room Tip: All rooms are on ground level and mine was quiet.

For starters, this hotel is right next to a sewage treatment plant. The smell is unbearable! The place is also terribly noisy. One can hear conversations from neighboring rooms even at 2am!

You should also keep in mind:

1. Half of the time the internet does not work, and when it does, it is extremely slow.
2. The rooms do not have a safe or a coffee maker, as advertised.
3. There is no AC.
4. The breakfast is a buffet of very poor quality in terms of food selection and hygiene.
5. The bathroom does not have ventilation or a fan.
6. The hotel is far from the center of the city and you can't even get a taxi there unless someone calls one for you.
7. Linens and mattresses are old and worn out.

On top of all the above, the staff is rude. I wanted to leave the hotel as soon as I saw it, but had to stay there for work. Very annoying.

I had booked online to stay at Casa Colorado, a boutique sister hotel in the Mision chain, after several emails had been exchanged. I informed them that I would arrive late, after 24 hours of travelling. When I arrived, the place was locked, and only a security guard was there, who refused to acknowledge my reservation as they were full: they insisted that despite the booking confirming that I had a room at Casa Colorado, that the reservation was not specific to Casa Colorado. After some negotiation, they found a room for me at Mision Guanajuato, but refused to provide transport to the hotel. When I arrived, again, they refused to acknowledge that there may have been an oversight on their side, and that I would have to speak to the manager, who after two days, has not appeared.

Mision Guanajuato is pretty, but as other reviewers have pointed out, it is quite tired, and not very well arranged. The swimming pool area is covered and is very close to most of the rooms, meaning that you hear every scream of delight that the swimming children frequently make. Furthermore, rooms look directly onto the pool so there is little privacy, and the patio areas of these rooms are used as some sort of storage area, with people coming and going, moving the chairs and tables away so that you cant use them.

The hotel is also full almost every day, of different conventions and conferences, with inadequate eating facilities to cope with the quantity. The breakfast is plentiful but the popular dishes are rarely replaced. Various children's parties also make it noisy from almost every angle that you turn, which removes the attraction of being several kilometres from the city.

There are plenty of other options in Guanajuato, where service exists and customers are people and not reservation numbers.

Enjoyed two nights here-not for those with walking issues but a treat for all others. Nice rooms, differing views, beautiful patios, quiet gardens, and a nice little pool area. Not downtown but in an easy location from highway-dowtown Guanajuato would be most confusing to anyone coming in their own vehicle. Great buffet breakfast and beautiful dining areas and bar area. Very professional and helpful staff.

Room Tip: Choose a room for ease of reaching if you have mobility issues or if beauty is important, ask for on...

We booked this place because it was reasonably priced in relation to other options. It is certainly true that the hotel is well outside the city centre and is best for travellers who have a car. However, I think to describe the hotel as terrible is totally unfair. The rooms are large, fairly well appointed, and the hotel has a spacious, light, and clean atmosphere. There is a swimming pool which is great for kids and the bar and restaurant are absolutely fine (if a little expensive for my taste). I would recommend taking breakfast elsewhere as this seems particularly over-priced. I am normally quite sensitive to noise but did not find noise to be a problem.

The hotel is not to be recommended for older people as to access the hotel from the car park you have to walk down a steep, cobbled incline (and obviously up again when you leave). Make sure when you arrive that you get the porter to bring your bags from your car (and tip him accordingly of course). For us, as a family of three, the hotel was comfortable and more than acceptable.

Room Tip: Probably the rooms around the pool are rather noisy.

Found the Spanish hacienda style of the hotel very beautiful and homey. The staff was very nice and helpful, and the breakfast buffet fantastic - perhaps the best selection I have ever seen. Downside for me - no gym, and you kinda feel like in the middle of nowhere, so walking in the area is not really an option. If you want to check out local sites you have to drive a bit. But the city is great.
Pool is small and cold, and there is a downside if you have older travelers, or persons with disabilities as there are quite a bit of stairs and it can be a little confusing at times navigating yourself around the property. It is probably great for those who just want a bit of a getaway.

Room Tip: Perhaps look for one near the pool - as you get a nice view.

While situated in a picturesque location next to an old hacienda, the dauntless traveler would be well advised to stay somewhere else. Given its location outside the old city center (always will need a taxi), its noisiness (for hallway noises echo endlessly through the thin doors into the rooms) and its general tired ambiance (it's in desperate need of a refresh), there are better overnight venues to be found. So for an equivalent nightly rate, do yourself a favor and head somewhere closer to town. On the plus side, there is free Internet, but these days not as much a perk than a standard expectation.
