It is a quiet place but it was kind of far from the main areas. The food in the restaurant is good though. My hubby and I paid for a room with breakfast and we noticed that the prices are the same or lower if we would had just purchaced the room without the breakfast. What really dissapointed us was that on Saturday morning when we wanted to book another night we were told that all the rooms were booked to a group that was coming in to do a short film! I thought that was so rude of them that they didn't have the courtesy to tell us ahead of time that no rooms were available for Saturday...we had already stayed there for 3 days. There's no airconditioning only a ceiling fan so the room was warm. The bathroom didn't have enough lighting nor enough ventilation. If you want to stay there I would suggest that you book your room with how many nights your staying or at least find out how many nights you can book so you won't be caught by surpsie like we did and end up on the street! Luckily we found a hole in the wall hotel a few buildings down from the Socavon and they only charged us 200 pesos for the night! How cheap is that!!! Like around $17.00 us dollars. It had a full size bed t.v. a nice bathroom and a fan...since we really didn't stay much in the hotel we only needed it to sleep this hotel was good for what we needed it. They had a small internet place downstairs.

Nice rooms, comfortable beds, helpful staff. It is a bit far from the center - 15-20 min on foot - which means you can actually sleep at night.

I read the reviews and was a little worried when my group traveling to GTO decided to use this hotel.

First, remember this is Guanajuato - a beautiful, wonderful, historical city - and there is no Ritz here.

First the bad (which I would actually call the "to be expected")

-poor water pressure
-slow and unreliable hot water
-no air conditioning
-lots of steps
-neighborhood noise
-school groups on weekends got pretty loud until wee hours

Now for the good:

-Beds were comfortable
-Rooms were very clean
-Rooms were comfortable at night if windows left open
-All staff (front desk, restaurant, cleaning staff) were cordial and efficient (most did not speak much English)
-You can flush t.p. at this hotel
-Restaurant very reasonable (we fed 13 for dinner for $70 USD plus a tip)
-an easy, safe 15 minute walk to centro or an easy $2.50 cab ride (just agree on the price before you leave)
-fairly easy (uphill) walk to the Mummy Museum
-small convenience store adjacent
-very reasonable internet cafe adjacent to hotel
-great views from the rooftop
-the inside courtyard is very nice

So, to me it depends on what you expect. If you want the quietest, most luxurious, most romantic hotel, then I suggest you skip this one (in fact, just skip Guanajuato). If you want authentic, convenient, friendly, "lively" atmosphere in this awesome city, the give it a try.

Some must do's in the city:
-Take one of the night tours with the singing students
-Hang out in the Jardin Union for the evening
-wander the narrow cobblestone alleyways around the Theater Juarez
-See the Museo de Las Momias (truly strange)
-Wander the Mercado Hidalgo
-Go up to the Valenciana Temple (cooler with great views and interesting history)
-Find the city's various plazas and churches and read the signs

My first trip to GTO was great, and Hotel Socavon was certainly an adequate base for exploring the town.

My family and I stood at this hotel for two days. Also keep in mind that this hotel use to be an old mine and upon entering the hotel you do feel like you are entering into a mine shaft, dark, gloomy and cold. The rooms are small and not very well lit. No air conditioning only ceiling fans, no elevators. I kept getting locked in the bathroom. The door kept getting stuck.
The restaurant is also very dark with very little light. Prices in the restaurant for breakfast are cheap, about $3.00 per person which includes a small fruit plate. All in all, if you are not planning to spend a large amount of time in your room, if you don't mind walking a long way to all the main attractions i. e. (Jardin Union, Teatro Juarez, La Universidad de Gunajuato, The Mercado etc.), if you want an economical place to stay in Guanajuato, then Hotel Socavon is the place for you.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Socavon in March 2004 after we read the recommendation in Fodor's Guidebook, and we were also lured in by the low price. The hotel is WAY out of downtown, a good 20-25 minute walk up a dirty and very busy street with no ambience or charm whatsoever. The hotel is dark and dingy upon entry, and although there is a much more attractive and quiet courtyard on the interior, it is still a bit gloomy. Our room was pretty bad, with a leaking toilet that put about 1" of water on the floor of the room while we were out, drenching the bottom of our luggage. The room was marginally clean as well and very dark. We asked to change rooms after the water debacle, which the staff took care of immediately, but I really wanted to look for another hotel the next day. Thankfully, we found the MUCH cuter "Hostal Cantarranas," with a perfectly convenient location and nicer room for only slightly more money.
