“Very nice hotel, superb location”
Reviewed 19 September 2008

The best this hotel has to offer is its location. Everything is just 5 minutes away walking. This is convenient, as you're close to most things but not in the middle of all the noise.

Breakfast is included. Don't expect too many dishes to choose from, though. Milk, fruit juices, cereals, fruit, coffee, bread, scrambled eggs, beans and that's about it.

The hotel itself is nicely decorated, and its layout offers a little taste of Guanajuato inside: to get to your room you'll walk through steep stairs and narrow alleys... just like you would in Guanajuato.

Rooms are quite spacey and have a small kitchenette, but no fridge. If you plan to use it, you'll need to ask the front desk for table and kitchenwares. Bathrooms, however, are a little smaller compared to the rest of room. If you like and expect a quiet room, try to book one of the upper rooms. Otherwise you'll hear everything what's happening in the room above you (furniture moving, steps, even flushing down the toilet).

If you plan to get to Guanajuato in your own car, be sure to tell the front desk about it once you book your room. The hotel only offers 8 free parking spaces for their guests, in a parking lot nearby (7-10 minute walk). It's not that easy to find free parking in Guanajuato and parking lots will cost you an extra USD$25 per day, so better inform the hotel you'll need a parking space and save some bucks.

Next door to the hotel is a small coffee shop called Cafe Conquistador. Very nice coffee and a delicious cheese cake!

I definitely recommend this hotel, especially if you plan to go with your significant other.

My friend and I just came from this hotel today. We booked it directly and got a better rate then on Expedia. Also, we could book it with just giving our credit card number, nothing else.

They gave us very good directions on how to get to them, then met us on the street to take us to the parking. The room was nice - has a kitchen that we did not use (of course!). The beds are big and comfortable. The bathroom is small but clean and with hot shower. The set up is very nice, the property is right in the middle of the city, and the staff was super helpful. They just were there any time we needed them. And breafast was super nice - abundant and with waiters!

Our friends stayed at another highly rated hotel on this site, but paid $50 more per night and I do not know if they got more for that. Maybe more art stuff on the walls. We were very happy with everything we got - not a posh hotel, but comfortable and right in the center.

I stayed at this fabulous hotel in 2003 and loved every minute of it! The steps were great exercise and the inner courtyard was beautiful. There was no central ac but you don't need it because of the dry climate and elevation of Guanajuato. Nights were aways cool and comfortable. The windows lacked screens but there were never any insects coming in, so we were OK. The only down-side was the noise at night. Definitely bring earplugs due to the street noises. Guanajuato is a popular tourist destination for Mexican families and the estudiantinos (minstrels) played and sang late into the night as crowds thronged along with them. Also, the roof dogs in the neighboring barrios barked all night. Around 3 AM the city gets a little quiet but them the roosters in the barrios start up at the crack of dawn so - bring the plugs! The staff speaks very little English so polish up on the Spanish. PLus'es are it is very clean, comfortable, close to the historic city center and the maid will personally do your laundry for a small fee! wonderful , safe city with lots of culture, great climate, and good prices still.

  • Liked — rooms were comfortable and clean with good view from my window of hillside barrios

While the hotel enjoys a great location close to the Jardin, it could use a good cleaning with a product that does not smell like cheap men's cologne. The bathroom was extremely small and the kitchen in our room had absolutely no dishes or utensils. The breakfast was adequate at best. I thought the furniture in the lobby and breakfast room needed to be cleaned or replaced.

I have stayed in quaint or unusual hotels throughout Central and South America and would not compare this one favorably to others where we have stayed in recent years.

I showed up in GTO as a solo traveller and went to El Meson de los Poetas without a reservation and it was ok because it was an off-peak travel season. A lot of GTO hotels offer different prices, depending on whether you're paying with cash or credit card but El Meson had the same price of 950 pesos per night, when I went. Their prices go up to 1400 pesos during major holidays.

The staff does not speak much English, except for one at the reception named Christian but he was there only on Friday and the weekends. Nonetheless, they definitely make an effort to understand you whether you're flipping through your Spanish-English dictionary or drawing something on a piece of paper to convey the correct Spanish word. They also have a sizable library of books on the history of Guanajuato, which is helpful because all of the major tourist sites have interesting historical backgrounds.

As many of the reviewers have said, breakfast is copious, delicious, well-rounded, and healthful. The servers are always refilling things for you and have a great sense of humor.

The location is perfect... close enough to the center of action but tucked away atop a gentle slope so that you can get some peace and quiet when you need it.

The rooms are colorfully decorated, clean, and comfortable. There are both large portable heaters and fans in the rooms as the heating/cooling is not centralized. The kitchen in my room, and perhaps all rooms, had a fan, stove, and sink but no refrigerator so I bought groceries at the nearby Mercado Hidalgo a little bit at a time. The bathrooms are small but not too small, I thought. The showers had good pressure and the hot water was hot. Plenty of closet space and cable tv too!

The only down-side of the hotel is the sound insulation. I was lucky that there were few others staying there when I went but I could still hear the baby crying next door at 1AM and a couple of guests chattering during their early check out at 5AM. Since the walls seem thin and the doors are more like big shutters, the sound from outside comes inside.

All and all, I would still stay there again. Some people saw the maze of stairs as a negative but I really enjoyed it because you got great views of the interior courtyards and it was true to the spirit of Guanajuato.

  • Liked — Colorful bright interiors, knowledgeable and friendly staff
  • Disliked — weak sound insulation in rooms

We found El Meson de los Poetas to be a very friendly, charming hotel. We stayed in two separate rooms on two separate occasions -- both were very clean, with firm beds, and private bathrooms for about $99 / night. Not luxurious, nothing fancy, but certainly nice with an artistic touch. The hotel rambles up and down on multiple levels. There is a very open and attractive area where breakfast is served (included in the price). The staff is very accommodating and friendly, free internet on a shared computer which was never busy. The hotel itself is a short walk from the Jardin and on a quiet side street near the Diego Rivera museum. Very safe and secure.

Their website did not allow direct booking so you have to call. I tried twice to find an English-speaking receptionist without success. If you don't speak Spanish, find someone to help you with making the initial reservation. Would defnitely recommend this hotel and stay here again.

Everything about this hotel is great - location, service, ambiance. My room was on the 4th floor and while it didn't have a view, it had its own private patio, very qiuet and cozy, with comfortable bed. The breakfast is served in a lovely courtyard and is delicious. The hotel also exhibits artwork from local and foreign artists. Another plus is the free internet access. The only drawback for some guests would be lack of elevator and the many stairs one would need to climb to get to the rooms on the higher floors, though the porter will take care of your luggage. Overall, it is a good value and wonderful experience. Would definitely return.
