“Bad service in the restaurant.”
Reviewed 26 May 2013

We did not stay at this hotel but we were looking for a nice breakfast at downtown. We thought this was a good restaurant because of its location and history, but we spend more than 30 minutes waiting for some coffee. The manager was aware of us just waiting and he did not mind.
When we saw that a small restaurant in front opened, we prefer to say goodbye and go to this restaurant where we could have some attention at least.

I do not recommend the resturant of this hotel.

You won't find a better-located hotel in Guanajuato. Just outside the hotel is the magnificent Teatro Juarez, the most popular restaurants, tons of mariachi groups and two of the main churches. The downside to this is that it gets really noisy 24/7. If you book this hotel and hate noise insist that your room faces Truco street. Truco street is really quiet.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing Truco street.

i stayed at this lovely hotel 55 years ago on a sketching trip the summer of 1958. the organizer, dr george shackelford, a wonderful artist, is still living in texas. when i was there, it was old, but at that age i was not as sensitive to bugs of any kind. but one of us had had a terrible time with dysentery. i guess you still have to avoid local produce and water. hardier travelers should see this place before time totally takes it ...the romance and quaintness and all the things there shouldnt be missed. we even went pretty far underground at the catacombs to draw,,,

the date below mentioned as travel date was not an option, but i had to pick...

A very beautiful hotel entrance. The rooms at the front are special versus the the rooms at the back which are just average. there are no elevators so you have to walk up the stairs. The help are very cordial. You get a free breakfast with your stay each day. The outdoor cafe/restaurant is really a nice place to sit and watch all the people going by while you eat or drink. The outdoor vendors come by and are a little annoying at times but manageable. The hotel is situated right in the heart of town which is very desirable especially if you want to get the real feel for the town. The hotel has some shortcomings ( ie no elevator) but they are more than overcome by the location and fun feeling you get while staying in a beautiful town.

This is a 150 years old hotel, located in the most important place in town for tourists: Jardín de la Union, just steps away from the Teatro Juarez, and close, by walking distance to many of all the attractions and beautiful places that this unique city offers to travelers and tourists.
In fact, the property needs a full refurbishment: normal rooms are very small and they are equipped with King Size Beds, that barely fit in the space. The beds are great. No air condition in the rooms. The bathrooms also need some refurbishment, since they seem to be very old. Instant hot water running though. If you are going to book a room there, please ask to be as far away as possible from the front of the hotel. It is too noisy there, due to crowds of people walking, eating and singing in the plaza. The restaurant inside the hotel is dramatically bad in terms of food and service. try to avoid eat there. There are many other options in the surrondings (just steps away).

Room Tip: Rooms in the back of the building are the best in terms of silence. There are not air condition in t...

I was there by 2 nights and I really enjoyed the bed! it was very confortable, the rooms are too small, the things that didn´t like me was the cleaness is poor. The staff should be focus in cleaning better.
The food in the restaurant was appropiete, good taste, but can be improve.
Is advisable for your location, is really in middle of the downtown.

This is barely a three star hotel. Maintenance has been deferred for far too long. The traveler photos make it look better than it is. The bathroom drains stink of sewage, the shower has mold up the walls, and the fixtures are rusty. The restaurant looked cute so we ate lunch there and were sick for three days, even trying to follow all of the safe food guidelines. Perhaps it's the kitchen hygiene so it doesn't matter what you eat. Being fair, only two of a group of nine were severly ill and two just queasy.

The central location on the square is a plus and minus. You can get to all of the sites in town easily but the restaurant clatter and mariachi bands go on until 2 or 3, depending on the night for those with rooms in the front. We were given a "quiet" room in the back which overlooks a main walkway to the plaza and is next to a central intersection with traffic flowing until 2 or 3, depending on the night. Since there is no AC in the rooms and with balcony doors closed the rooms become very stuffy very quickly even in October the doors have to be open, thus very few people sleep. It's an exhausting location.

Everyone in our group couldn't wait to leave the Santa Fe and move on to San Miguel. If I had been on my own I would have checked out after the first night. My advice is to find a hotel with updated rooms and bathrooms in a quiet location. Guanajuato is a lovely little town but the plaza is very busy and very noisey much of the day and night.

Room Tip: Of our group of 9 with rooms throughout the hotel no one had a good one. All were noisey, outdated...
