La Casa del Tio
Reviewed 24 June 2011

I went to Guanajuato with a friend for the last Cervantino Festival. As this was spontanious we were glad to get a room. At least we had a bunk bed on our own: in the same room was a double bed, occupied with 3 guys. This was still fine, as the whole beautiful city was crowded because of the event. BUT

- the staff was really unfriendly, no help at all with questions (e.g. how to get to the Museo de las Momias)
- there should have been breakfast (included), but once there was nothing, once only coffee (we asked more than once at what time it's supposed to take place)
- kitchen was very dirty
- there was one room with showers and toilet for around 4 dorms (?) - waiting like 40 minutes to use the loo in the morning

Positive facts:
+ nice building, the view from the rooftop terrace is stunning
+ the room was clean and good
+ central location, walking distance to all touristy hotspots

Summary:
It might be a good choice during low season. I'd reccomend it only if you are in desperate need of a (not too expensive) place to stay.

I've been there with my dads, I slept in a dormitory and them, in a private room.
The dormitory was very very simple, very very noisy and cold.
The private room was very calm and beautiful.

But the persons attending are very very nice, the hostel is at 5mn of the main place, there is a nice terrace with a nice view on town and the price is almost cheap.

So, if you want to be calm there, sleep in a private room, because in the dormitorys it is very very noisy all night long!!!

The worst of the 20 hostels during my trip. The worst breaky (half a banana and 2 slices of bread, strictly rationed), no cereal, no milk, no fruit, no juice, no toaster, no refrigerator, no silverware, no cooking utensils and a broken microwave. Smelly baths, loud traffic and diesel exhaust in the rooms starting at 7AM, and no sofas or comfortable chairs anywhere. TV (no DVD) is in the kitchen with only a tiny table and 3 bar stools. Rooftop terrace was nice but no one used it.

With a limited travel budget at my disposal, I stay in hostels all the time. Hostels tend to be either terrible or fantastic, and La Casa del Tio was one of the best I've ever stayed in. It was clean and well managed, with staff that bent over backwards to make me feel at home and answer all my questions. The dorms had lockers and even padlocks were provided if needed. Beds were comfortable, multiple bathrooms and showers ensured there were no long waits, and the hot water worked around the clock. The only drawback was the street noise on the weekends, but this La Case del Tio is located right in the center of town, and a bit of noise is a small price to pay for being so close to everything. On top of all that, it was eminently affordable. I came for 3 days and stayed 7. I give this one a BIG thumbs up.

I stayed here for 5 nights and had a great stay. The hostel is located very very close to the centro historico and everything is within walking distance. Its easy to get a bus straight here from the main bus station when you arrive too, just ask for Teatro Principal. The hostel was clean and secure and the staff helpful and friendly. Gracias a todos y hasta luego!

I always look for a clean, not expensive and well located place to stay. After 3 days in this hostel I discovered that la Casa del Tio is part of a growing chain of professional hostels working together to provide a better service to visitors. Good value.
