“Cozy but loud”
Reviewed 18 October 2013 via mobile

Centrally located, close to everything; main attractions and bus stop. Staffs were really nice, breakfast was ok. Good place to meet people. But it was extremely loud at night from 2 clubs and loud at early morning from cars engines, so basically time for sleep was between 3am 7am. Without rug, bathroom was really dirty.

We took the private room with the bathroom inside the room. It was actually located behind the kitchen and could hear everything that was going on in the next room (the rooms are not seperated by a real wall actually). The room is a hole in the ground floor of the hotel, very small with a window in the upper part of the wall, which gives you the feeling that the passersby can get a glimpse of you. The bed was horrible, small, with two old mattresses put one on top of other, and the sheets had stains and holes. Nobody bothered puting the shower curtain inside the shower so we had to do it ourselves- not to mention the hair inside the shower. The only good thing is the staff (everyone is extremely friendly) and the location (in the center of Guanajuato). The room cost 36 dollars per night, and for this price we expected something totally different (If it was half the price i wouldn't be complaining). Make yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.

Casa el tio is a friendly, clean hostel less than min walk to the main square. The rooms are simple but clean, and there is free wifi, drinking water, cooking facilities, lockers (deposit required for the lock) and continental breakfast. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

I'm pretty sure you could do better than to stay here. It is well located, close to everything, but the whole place seems like it was pieced together as an afterthought.
If you're in one of the private rooms, you can hear the TV blaring from the restaurant kitchen. The shared bath from one of the private rooms require that you walk through the restaurant to get to it. It is also the restroom for the restaurant! I actually thought it was a funny experience, but if you like your comforts, beware.
The upstairs dorms are a mess of beds shoved anywhere they could find space. The kitchen had no silverware, a tiny fridge, no microwave, no dishsoap. In summary, I don-t think it's intended to be used.
Really, the only redeeming feature of this place is its beautiful rooftop terrace. Have a glass of wine up there and laugh about your choice of hostels.
Oh, and if it matters, the staff does not speak English.

Room Tip: If you choose a private room, get the one with the bathroom in it. And beware of the one dorm room t...

I traveled to Guanajuato in a group of 10 students and enjoyed just about everything about the Casa del Tio. The rooms were well kept, the bathrooms were clean, the wifi connection was good, and the showers generally had warm -- but not quite hot -- water. The hostel has an extremely friendly staff and a beautiful rooftop terrace. Breakfasts were somewhat small but certainly nothing to complain about given the incredible price of the hostel. The location is perfect for the beautiful small town of Guanajuato. I recommend it!
