To see all that was there before the current (also historical, but with "only" 100-200 year history) buildings, and before the arrivalof the Spaniards is overwhelming. Mexico has such a rich and ancient history that you can discover new things almost in any corner of the downtown area, new and old.

Nice place to spend a morning in Mexico city's downtown, the outer buildings show how the mexicas built their temples, and although the restoration was made long ago with what I consider very bad techniques you can still see how advanced their building abilities were.
The real jewels are inside the museum with the two masive stone sculptures Tlaltecuhtli an Coyolxauhqui and many more interesting pieces. After "Museo de Antropologia" this is the second best prehispanic museum in Mexico City.

I would recommend visiting this museum before visiting anything else, especially if you stay in zocalo. It gives you a very good history about what the culture in the area was like right before the Spandiards came. It's a good preface for visiting other pre-hispanic sites in the region.

The walkway around the ruins itself is well navigated and every single turn has a information display in english so you know you are not just looking at some piece of rock but something that actually has history. The museum itself is also well curated. Every single case has a sign in english, and it's very clear where is the start and end of a section - you can't get lost. The displays are engaging too, in the sense that you can view the exhibits from different angles and heights, not just straight on. This makes viewing more interesting. It's a purpose built facility with well programmed spaces. This really should be rated higher than #12.

This is a real archeological treasure literally in the center of the city and underneath the streets (well it was).
Fascinating displays and a glimpse of what Mexico City was like before the Spanish paved it over!
