The Maria Cristina is a great hotel for the casual or the business traveler. On our recent trip to Mexico City I made the mistake of passing by this 'classic choice for budget travelers' and trying to go more upmarket. Unfortunately the Maria Cristina turned out to be a nicer hotel for more than half the price. It is a very individual hotel, but has a classic lobby, uniformed staff, and rooms which are made up to the standard of any large chain hotel. The bed and pillows were by far the fluffiest we had in Mexico. Don't do what I did and be put off by the price; it's just a great deal.

Also, their taxi service was a great way to get around and stay safe; it is just a few dollars more than the sito taxis and has knowledgable drivers who speak English.

Not as good as the pictures on its website. At least we had a dark room, just average. Quite far from Metro, but conveniently close to Av. Insurgentes where Metrobus, a reliable bus service, run along. There are convenience stores around, but most restaurants are some blocks away in uglier Zona Rosa. Helpful staff, there are weird shops beside the lobby and an expensive internet cab. There is also a restaurant who serves a good breakfast, not included.

When I first read the reviews of the hotels in Mexico City I couldn't decide between Casa Gonzalez and Maria Cristina. I loved the great reviews of Maria Cristina but thought from some of the comments that is was too far away from everything. After staying there that I can now give you more information about this. It is only about a 5 minute walk to Reforma which is a large boulevard with mini buses running in each direction every 3 minutes or so. These buses cost about 30 cents to get on. You can pay the driver and they run from one end of the city to the other(from the Almeda which is a 20 minute walk to the Zocolo to Chapultepec Park which is where there are 3 major museums as well as other attractions). But the best part is that you can take the buses to the metro station Hildago and use the metro to go anywhere in the city. So don't worry about the location. It is far better than being near the Zocolo in my opinion. The Zocolo is very noisy an not very clean from what I saw. The Zona Rosa is also a short walk away from the Maria Cristina.
The cheaper rooms at this hotel are now about $75 a bit up from the rate quoted in several reviews. The rooms are adequate, clean, good water pressure, and the one I was in looked onto a beautiful garden and a bar belonging to the hotel.
The room was very quiet and comfortable. The lobby was large and there is a nice restaurant attached to the hotel. There is also internet service available.

The hotel was a recommendation from a friend, and I went with my doubts.
The result was a great surprise, from a budget well maintain colonial hotel, in the middle of this huge city.

Great location, within walking distance of Zona Rosa. Nice people and real clean. Ask for a room with the air conditioner otherwise it can get a little stuffy in the room. Also negotiate with the tour company if you plan on a day trip. The tour company is located in the hotel.

This is an excellent hotel. My husband and I usually come to Mexico for business and stay here. The prices are quite good and the service impeccable, the hotel clean and the location great. The staff is very friendly and the restaurant is even good. Polanco, Las Lomas, Zona Rosa, La Condesa, all these neighborhood are within easy rich of MC. Highly recomendable!

After reading reviews on TripAdvisor and talking to a friend in Mexico City the Maria Cristina was the one that bubbled up to the top.

LOCATION: The hotel is only a few blocks from the Insurgentes Metro Station. You can hop on the subway from the airport and you are at your hotel for about 30 cents per person. It’s also great for visiting all parts of the city. The walk is safe in well-trafficked lit streets. It is a few blocks from the British and US Embassies. There are a few 24-hour convenience stores close by to grab a snack on the way home or on the way out. The Zona Rosa is a nice area, with some pedestrian (walking only) streets. There are plenty of restaurants and nightclubs to keep you busy catering to all type of lifestyles (gay/straight), older and younger. The hotel is on a relatively quiet street, so street noise is low. Street parking, though metered during the day, is readily available in the neighborhood but there is always a taxi outside if you need it.

VALUE: The room cost less than $60 a night. We had a room towards the back. I was able to peek into a few rooms while passing by in the hall and the decor in each room was generally the same. The room was average size. The beds were comfortable and not as hard as I was expecting from some people’s reviews. Some rooms do not have air conditioners but they do provide a fan. Since the hotel is located on a relatively quiet street, having the window open is not terribly noisy. We were in Mexico City in the hottest month of the year and it was perfectly fine. The TV had cable with both English and Mexican stations (great for those of us with limited Spanish). The bathroom has a stand up shower, no tub. There is a separate area for the sink so someone can be in the shower while the other person uses the sink.

CLEANLINESS: The room was very clean. The beds were changed every day and fresh towels were provided upon request. They are quick to get you additional towels if needed. The hallways are clean and the hotel lobby was well appointed.

HOTEL GENERAL INFO: They have a restaurant that is open early and closes early in the evening. The food there is good and was a good value too. They have a quaint courtyard with a fountain in the middle. They have a spiral staircase you can use or an elevator to get to your room. They have internet access but with only 2 computers, it is ultimately not very convenient (you can always visit an Internet Cafe outside the hotel; there are plenty). They have a little travel agency inside the hotel if you need to make tour or rental car arrangements. The front staff was extremely helpful with directions and the whole staff was willing to suggest personal short cuts for getting across town.

We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who is visiting Mexico City and will surely stay here again on our next visit. If you plan on lounging in your room/hotel all day and need amenities such as a pool or big bathtub, this might not be the place for you. But if you are in Mexico City to explore and have fun outside your hotel and are looking for a great place to stay, the Maria Cristina is the perfect choice.
