“2nd time here”
Reviewed 9 March 2007

This is the second time I stayed at Hotel Catedral. Again, I cannot say enough about the location and the service. Friendly, helpful staff and a very short walk to the zocalo, the heart of the city and indeed, the heart of the country. Close to good restaurants as well. Try Cafe Popular which caters to locals, for an excellent, inexpensive meal. Or for pan dulce and hot chocolate, if you want an late night snack. Great place, great hood.

Room was quiet even though in the centre of MC but suprisingly NO view. Room smelt of cigarettes even though requested non-smoking. Beds were ok. Shower was a shocker, I would state the worst from a months stay in Mexico, hot and cold and a halo spray style that defied washing anything other than your shoulders.
tired 70's decor .. but great location!! and cheap!! If you want a place that is cheap to sleep and are not fussy about decor it will get you there.
Breakfast was unimpressive. But plenty of other places to eat nearby.

This is a great hotel with an excellent location and a very helpful staff. I have stayed here two times in the last two years and service has been excellent. Nevertheless: warning! A new disco opened by the end of 2006 blasting music into the rooms that look to the back of the hotel. Hopefully they will remedy this situation soon! Try to get a room with balcony if you want to avoid having a discoteque right into your room all night long! Otherwise, it is a great bargain.

All the good things I heard about the Catedral turned out to be true. I stayed there for three nights in January. It was a great value at approximately $41 per night (with discount for cash, and there were no unexpected taxes or other extras). My only reservations are that the beds were too firm for my liking, and that there was noise from a nearby nightclub that can be annoying if you are in one of the rooms on the back side of the hotel. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is good (and also a good value), the location is great, and there are great views from the terrace.

Agree with most of the positive comments already posted. Easy access to Zocalo, Cathedral and metro. Used restaurant only for breakfast. It was just OK. But staff was helpful (and fluent in English), rooms were clean, price made it a great value. Rooms facing the street may be noisy (damn burglar alarm across the street went off four times one night).

By the way, if you pay cash, you can get a discount. But if you do that, you can't charge restaurant meals to the room.

Hotel has two computers in lobby for Internet access, but it's cheaper elsewhere. The only English language programming on TV is CNN International (aside from some US programming with Spanish subtitles on other channels). (This may seem like a small thing, but if you suffer from insomnia, you soon will tire of the recycled CNN stories--they will run the same pieces hourly all night long.)

I don't think you can reserve via the usual Internet services, but I was able to do it via e-mail easily.

Luxurious? No. Comfortable and clean? Yes. Worth the price? Most definitely.

For me, the most important features of any hotel are price, cleanliness and location. The Hotel Catedral cost me $2050 pesos en effectivo (= about $200 USD in cash) for five nights at the end of December. My room was clean upon arrival and was cleaned every day during my stay. The towels were a bit worn, but they were clean, as were the bed linens. The shower had hot water and good pressure. The bed was comfortable. The room was spacious. Yes, the decor is ca. 1970 but I got used to it. The location is very convenient to the historic sites around the Zocalo as well as the Zocalo Metro station. On the next block from the hotel, there is an HSBC ATM and a 7-Eleven to purchase bottled water. I had requested a room away from the street when I made my reservation on the hotel's website so I did not have a problem with excessive noise. In general, I had no problems whatsoever with the Hotel Catedral and, at such a great price, I would stay there again.
