I just popped by to this museum while I just finished visiting the world class museum of anthropology about 500 meters away. I was attracted by the building's modern architecture, so I figured that I had nothing much to lose fully having the intention to spend just a short time in this museum. A short visit as planned, and truly a short quick visit is all one needs if one does not have much knowledge in who Rufino Tamayo is/was. I find that the museum is suffering from a lack of works to display. The video and static light pieces which are called art does require taste to appreciate.

Sometimes the Tamayo has very, very good contemporary art exhibits. Other times, however, it is absolutely awful. Check on-line first to see what's showing before you go.

Tamayo is an original artist, expressing what is essential to Mexico as it moved from the Diego Rivera influences into the modern era. Very interesting, and the special expositions have been thoughtfully staged.

Bitterly disappointed to miss what promised to be a great collection, replaced with vastly inferior contempory pieces. Is this a trend in Mexico City?, same happened when we went out to San Angel, Carrilo Gil museum, also a bitter disappointment and waste of time!,
At least at Tamayo you can refresh at the very trendy and good resto/cafe and you don't even have to buy a ticket for the crap museum, look out for ,new world fair, sign around the side, that looks like Londons ,new scotland yard , revolving sign. Nice place to refresh after visiting the magnificent Anthropology Museum.

I like Rufino Tamayo´s paintings and I enjoyed seeing this museum. The building is of great modern design. In one room there is a video display on the history of how this building was designed and built with a famous Mexican architect and Rufino Tamayo. Then the Tamayo paintings: maybe not a ton to see but well worth it, showing different eras of Tamayo´s art. In the other part of the museum were displayed paintings by other artists.
