“Great eclectic collection”
Reviewed 14 February 2014

Spent about 2 hours here before lunch one day. It is a marvelous collection of furniture, pottery, silver, paintings, tapestries, etc from Franz Mayer's personal collection. The venue is wonderful. It is part of a property that was used as a hospital for about 400 years. The entry fee is less than 4 USD. The grounds are very historic and it is a block from Palacio de Bellas Artes in Centro Historico. Loved it.

“An excellent museum to visit in Mexico City”
Reviewed 15 November 2013

This was a private collection of all types of art that has been turned into a museum. The building and grounds are impressive. The artwork is quite varied, but there are some beautiful pieces there. It is a very pleasant way to spend an hour or so. There are two entrances. Enter on Hidalgo, not on the back street through the garage.

“Rich like a royal palace”
Reviewed 13 November 2013

This is not a museum where you are “compelled to learn something”. This is the home of a very wealthy man of the XIX century, which contains his fabulous art collection and riches worthy of a royal palace. You stroll around, moving from wonder to wonder, and you enjoy what you see without asking yourself too many questions. A fascinating and relaxing visit.

The collection includes pieces of everything which is collectible. Many Italian paintings (among them a nice Lorenzo Lotto), many Spanish paintings (with one Ribera and others from the school of Zurbarán), furniture, faiences, carpets, tapestry, screens (amazingly beautiful), wooden statues, high-relief sculptures, magnificent objects for church ceremonies, plates and vases in porcelain, silver and gold artefacts and ornaments, and much more. The building where the museum is hosted was built in the 16th century as a hospital: it is facing a small colonial square, planted with trees and enclosed between two beautiful churches in Baroque style.

The museum is located in the Avenida Hidalgo, in front of the Alameda. It can be easily reached by underground line # 8, at station “Bellas Artes”: the museum is only 100 metres away. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is closed on Monday. Admission costs 25 Pesos (about 1.5 €) and is free on Tuesday. Infrastructure includes: baggage storage, bookshop, pleasant coffee-shop in the “patio”, lavatories, lift, access for disabled people. Taking photos is allowed, and the lighting is good; no flash allowed.

“Small/Different”
Reviewed 23 October 2013

This is an interesting museum that was walking distance from ny hotel and is also very near other great places in the heart of Mexico City. it is an interesting building w/some fine exhibits, but I found it a bit unusual to get around--it didn't flow naturally but a good mix of things to see. Not near the caliber of Prado as someone else mentioned, but definitely worth visiting

“Restaurant is the best thing about this museum”
Reviewed 20 October 2013

I say this mostly because I'm not a big fan of religious art, silver church ornaments, tableware, gilded mirrors and heavy carved wood furniture and doors. Having just visited The Prado in Madrid, the art here pales in comparison. But, the restaurant is fantastic and reasonably priced. Great salad adorned with cranberries, nuts, fresh apples, and a homemade vinaigrette for 50 pesos. The chicken mole empanada was delicious. The outdoor dining patio is stunning.
