The location of this hotel could not be better and the inner courtyard and entrance is lovely. But.. the rooms could use some love and definitely some new mattresses. Breakfast is offered for a price on the terrace which is quite lovely. Overall, i would choose again for the location but I would see if I could do better first.

I blind booked the Best Western Majestic in Mexico City through Hotwire. After I received the confirmation with the hotel name I was dismayed to read the traveler's reviews here, and approached my coming stay with some trepidation. However my experience exceeded expectation.
I thought the hotel was absolutely delightful. No it is not modern, cookie-cutter, beige or uniform. Perhaps other travelers were expecting the blandness of most chain hotels. Yes the mattress was hard, yes there is only one old fashioned elevator, and yes the water is not blazing hot. The wifi was spotty, but I have found it an issue in Mexico and Europe for that matter. There is no fitness centre nor pool. That said, I can't imagine why anyone would get worked up about that. It's not like there isn't a tonne of things to see and do in Mexico City.

The old-world charm and location of the hotel makes up for this in spades. I loved the handmade Mexican tile that adorns the walls, the sweeping marble staircase, the cozy lobby and heavenly view from the rooftop restaurant. I also found the buffet breakfast reasonably priced, delicious and offering a good mix of traditional Mexican and American breakfasts. My room, which was large, airy, clean and bright, faced on to the Zòcalo! What a view. It was quiet enough for me to sleep at night.
Finally the staff were pleasant, friendly and helpful. Although it may help that I speak Spanish. I would definitely stay there again.

Upon entering the hotel, the lobby is amazing. The reception desk staff are not the best in customer service! and the room we stayed in was mediocre. The curtains were off their hooks so light seeped into the room. The Internet was down when we were there. Got many excuses as to why and finally after 6 hours, we were informed it was broken!
The rooms are old and not up to standard, no air conditioning and can be noisy if you face the main square.

The only reason I was booked into this disgusting hotel is because it was the meeting point for a tour with Peregrine Adventures.

The "Hotel Majestic" is a disgrace. The photos unfortunately do not project the way the smell and dirt (I am sure the carpets have never been cleaned) permeate ones senses. As an analogy, the room's oder is like walking in a large city in India with temperature being 36++(c). From immediate congestion, burning eyes and the heat, since there is NO air conditioning. The bathroom appeared to not have been properly cleaned in years. One would have to walk around the room with slippers/flip flops. For health reasons I checked out. A tour company never has an excuse to book a group into a filthy and dirty hotel like the Majestic. This hotel is lacking in even basic hygiene. filth of an unsanitary room, no air conditioning.

As soon as you walk into the lobby ones eyes start burning. Even the hotel staff agrees. They said that the owners do not do renovations and are just running this poor excuse for a hotel into the ground! The building is a "sick" building.

Stay away from this Hotel!!!

Room Tip: Do not not even think about staying at the Hotel Majastic!

Pro: Location; can walk/metro to everything.
Staff very responsive and helpful
Atmosphere - great old building
Cleanliness - room, lobby, rooftop restaurant all spotless
7.2 earthquake - on 6th floor; rolled but no damage
Con: Had a couple of plumbing issues - immediately resolved - fixtures are very old
Had electircal issue - immediately resolved
Some noise over night - was there a week - maybe 2-3 nights
For us, this hotel was more than adequate due to location and atmosphere. We don't care about old fixtures et al (and, reading reviews, we loved the hard beds) as long as it's clean, and it is. We loved the single elevator - walked down every day - never had to wait to go up. So, if up-to-date fixtures, plush towels etc. are important, look elsewhere. In the end, we would stay here again.

Room Tip: If it matters (I think it costs a bit more) ask for Zocalo view.

This hotel is in a great spot for tourism, right on the Zocalo and across from the Presidential Palace. The lobby is very nice. You can hire a taxi for the day through the hotel, and see much more things than what the bus tours offer. Rooftop restaurant has a great view of the Cathedral and the food is good. Breakfast buffet is expensive unless it's included with your room, but we just ordered coffee and sweet rolls and enjoyed the friendly staff and views. Two issues: 1. The internet almost never worked at this hotel. Again, Almost Never!; and 2. The room was very basic, old carpeting, no view, and smelled strange. If the internet is fixed and the rooms upgraded, this could be a very lovely place to stay!

Positives: Location is great. Right in the center of the Zocalo. We saw the flag being lowered and raised every day. Walk to many sights, metro station, etc... Price is good if you are on a budget.

Negatives: Rooms are small. Cleaning staff missed a day of cleaning with no explanation. Tub drained very slow (it was only fixed 2 days later). Room keys deactivated every day (a pain). Beds were very, very hard. It was like sleeping on the floor or box spring. I can't believe they call it a mattress. WiFi was hit and miss, at best. We didn't eat there other than drinking in bar up stairs.

Bottom line: Spend the extra $20 a night and stay elsewhere. You won't regret it. They need to put money back into place.

Room Tip: Rooms facing Zocalo are great, but VERY noisy.
