“Great!”
Reviewed 5 February 2014

We had a great time. We spent 6 days touring Mexico City and had a wonderful time. We were very comfortable at the hotel. We stayed in a suite with a view of the Zócalo. We found the staff very helpful and friendly. We love the historic lobby with the Tiffany stained glass roof and ornate iron works. We also loved the location. The hotel is across the plaza from the National Palace, the Catedral Metropólitana, and the ruins of Tenochtitlan. We also walked to el Palacio de Bellas Artes and many museums.

Room Tip: The rooms on the plaza have a great view but the is a little noise during the day.

Thank you for sharing with us your review is glad to know that your stay with us was satisfactory for you. As you mentioned we are located just in front of the main square of the main square. Besides our rooms with Zocalo view, we have rooms with internal view; those are great for travelers who prefer a quieter stay. We will be happy to welcome you again.

I was staying at the Grand Hotel for business they actually make your stay amazing, on my arrival I was welcomed with a glass of champagne, Sergio, Roberto and Cynthia were always attentive to any requests during my only one night. Big and clean room overlooking the "Plaza de la Constitución" that is a really beautiful place.

24 hours service in the business center! And Marco helped me with my boarding pass and my taxi booked early. My check out was at 6:00 am!

Excellent overall service and quality service is unmatched.
Will recommend this hotel for business or leisure .. and surely ill be back.

We did not stay at the Gran Hotel, but we went there for drinks, as the restaurant overlooks the zocolo. It was a great spot to enjoy the setting sun, and the service was excellent. Adan and Maria were our servers and they were very attentive and gave us recommendations for places to visit while in D.F. A great place to have dinner while visiting the city!

We loved our stay at this hotel. The location is perfect, walking distance to tons of attractions. Rooms are sound proof. We love that because we were traveling with kids age 4 and 5. Hotel staff was super courteous. Good eating options right inside the hotel. My kids got toy vintage cars as gift from the staff. They were absolutely ecstatic!

Because of its location it could be a bit noisy. The hotel itself is quite, but if your room is facing Zocolo you would hear noise if there is any event going on. If you are a light sleeper remember to request a quieter room. My little boys loved watching activities at Zocolo so we were okay with the noise.

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper request for a room not facing Zocolo.

It is an extraordinary hotel, but a word of warning about room 217. This is an expensive room, which looks onto an interior space, and so it ought to be quiet, unlike the rooms at the front which have a view but lots of noise. Room 217 is too sombre and during the day and too early in the morning there are crashings and bangings from the garage next door which are intolerable.

I chose Gran Hotel for its central location. The lobby is amazingly beautiful - I took photos of the Tiffany glass ceiling everyday! The wrought iron elevator is gorgeous. We were upgraded free to a suite overlooking the main plaza (Zocalo) with a bedroom and separate sitting room.

Decor is a bit dated (as in floral curtains and bedspreads) but clean and cared for which is what matters, plus I suppose given the hotel lobby, super modern furnishings would be odd. I wouldn't be opposed to an all-white featherbed duvet though...just a thought. My only complaint about the room is the mattress. The side next to the alarm clock, the side where people tend to climb in/out of bed and sit on the edge, was quite worn down and made that side of the mattress a bit uncomfortable to sleep on. But it was a king bed so we just moved over more.

Bathroom is well stocked with a surprising number of complimentary toiletries (including razor, shaving cream, toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, plus the normal shampoo/conditioner, body gel, and lotion. Hot water was good and water pressure was strong. Tap water claims to be purified (still smells like rusty pipes so I didn't drink or brush with it).

The Zocalo (plaza) is loud and brightly lit (at least it still was for Christmas/New Year nearly 2 weeks after the holidays). The noise continues until late night. The loud music is an interesting mix of U.S. country to pop to classic rock. During the holidays it was a little like Times Square. But honestly, even with a room overlooking it, we were so worn out from sightseeing that it didn't bother us at all (and the windows have blackout curtains so no light pollution). I understand the other commenters' complaints, but did not feel it affected my trip at all. But perhaps an older audience or light sleepers should reconsider or request a room facing away from the Zocalo. But I repeat, didn't bother us at all.

I liked the location (rather than a posher neighborhood like Polanco or Condesa) because its central and so many cheap street food/hole in the wall taquerias. There are street performers on the pedestrian streets and so many people (!). There are also some good nicer restaurants around. Traffic is a bit crazy especially with all the pedestrians and one way streets. Sometimes taxi drivers are cranky about it but its always easy to get a taxi in the area. Sometimes coming back to the hotel the last kilometer was a challenge, some taxis dropped us a few blocks away to avoid the crazy traffic.

Staff were polite. Check in/out easy. Can set up tours for you which we took advantage of once - 500 pesos/person for a 7-8 hour tour: Plaza de Las 3 Culturas, a cultural "gift shop," the pyramids, lunch (not included), and Virgen de Guadalupe. You could do those separately and cheaper, but it was worth it to us. Easy and fast and a knowledgeable tour guide (bilingual). The hotel can also set up with the same company to other sites/day trips (Taxco, Puebla, etc.).

We did not eat at the hotel restaurants at all - can't comment on those.

No problems whatsoever. Definitely a great central location for sightseeing. Room was clean and comfortable. Great experience, would recommend.

Room Tip: I liked the Zocalo view -- but be warned, its bright and noisy!

We appreciate the time you took to write your review about your stay with us. Those comments are extremely important for our team because is a chance to identify our opportunity areas. As you mentioned we have a wonderful location, with an amazing view of the main square and the Metropolitan Cathedral, if you have a room with Zocalo view this is an opportunity to be witness of a traditional event: The Raising Flag. Also we have two restaurants which will offer you excellent menu and service, “Café de la Ciudad de Mexico” with an Executive Menu and “Terraza” with a nice view of the Zocalo. About our mattresses, we would like to comment that in the hotel we are making changes with our equipment, those changes includes of course mattresses so we can assure you that in every room you will find a mattress of high quality as well as all the amenities. We hope to receive again, it would be a honor.
