Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico

As all reviews mentioned, the hotel is a architecture gem in the historical center of Mexico. I had an executive suite with the view on the Zocalo where something always happen (raising of the flag, concert, demonstrations...) so noisy. Nevertheless I enjoyed the location and slept well with earplugs. The room was large and has everything including tea cattle, iron and mini bar. The large TV was not working but got fixed straight away. The bathroom was also very spacious with a bathtub. The shower was really strong and practical. Actually my colleague had a normal room next door and it was very the same space and features with only an entrance with sofa and chair in the suite.
I stayed a few days and enjoyed every night coming back to the hotel a glass of sparkling wine at the reception. The girls were really nice and friendly.

Breakfast was included and it is not a buffet but a la carte. It was good though I prefer buffets with large choices. The service was a bit hectic in the morning; waiters were nice but often we had to ask several times and one morning a cup of coffee was poured in the back of a client.
The restaurant on the roof is great. Margaritas are very generous and excellent! The food was good.
I really like very much the calm and special atmosphere of this hotel and will certainly go back.

This hotel is absolutely beautiful! We enjoyed our room (Jr. Suite) which overlooked the Zocalo. A little loud at times (noise from the Zocalo) but a comfortable and spacious room. Staff was extremely helpful to all guests so we were able to see the sights within our price range. Location was perfect since many sights were within walking distance or easy to get to with the Metro (access almost across the street). We had one meal in their restaurant at the top of the hotel (with a fabulous hibiscus margarita). The view is worth it (the food was good as well). We were lucky to have arrived right before a lengthy festival of countries in the Zocalo so we had ample entertainment at night. If you are big into night life then this is not your location - this is more of a daytime location with lots of shopping opportunities within walking distance and access to various sights. Breakfast was included with our room and the fresh fruit every morning was refreshing and a great way to start the day. Their breakfast options should fit all tastes and get you going! I strongly recommend this hotel. Oh, and the amenities in the extremely large bathroom covered everything! Shampoo, conditioner, lotion, face soap, hand soap, shower cap, shoe shine, toothbrush & toothpaste (for one day), and a shaving kit.

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking the Zocalo. Noise generally ends before 10pm and you will have the opportuni...

I stayed three nights in Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico in early May 2014, for a short holiday break after a conference in Veracruz. Having not been particularly impressed with the hotels I encountered in Veracruz, I was uncertain about what to expect when I arrived this hotel, particularly since it is not at all an expensive hotel in international context.

Since my room overlooked one of the busiest plazas in Mexico City there was a bit of noise during the day and into the evening, but during the night it was quiet enough for me to sleep well.

All my worries were swept away the moment I stepped out of the cab. The whole staff performed absolutely perfectly and gave me the full five star experience throughout. I was greeted with a glass of sparkling wine at the check in counter, and followed to a beautiful, nicely furnished and spotlessly clean room overlooking the Zocalo. A tiny bit of wear and tear to the interior did not trouble me one bit, but added to the historic feel.

The architecture of the lobby is an experience in itself, and the main reason I selected this hotel. The service in the roof top restaurant and bar is friendly and good. The buffet food was admittedly not fantastic, but sipping a drink while watching the blue hour over the Zocalo in the evening is what took me there two nights in a row (but I had food there only the first night).

Breakfast was very good, and service from all staff continued to be superb through my stay. Great helpfulness with all questions I had, and they rapidly arranged a car with English speaking driver when requested.

Definitely a hotel I would like to come back to!

It is very satisfying for us to know you enjoy your stay and that the services our collaborators provide you are to your liking. Our staff is compromised in offering our guests personalized attention and unique experiences. Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico provides its guests two fabulous restaurants: Terraza and Café Ciudad de México where our chefs will always delight you with our delicious menu. Thank you for your preference, we hope to welcome you, soon.

For our five day trip to Mexico City, Teotihuacan, and Tula my girlfriend and I stayed at the Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico which is directly on the Zocalo, the city's central square. What the hotel lacks in a swimming pool it more than makes up with location, ambiance, and class. The hotel is most noted for its history and its Tiffany stained glass ceiling. Originally built in 1899 as a trade center the building was converted to a hotel in 1968. And then in 2003 it was completely renovated and refurbished into the modern hotel that it is today. The rooms and common areas have all been upgraded to a quiet oasis in the middle of hustle and bustle. There is always something happening in the Zocalo, from demonstrations to major cultural events. And no matter how many people there might be, the multitude of police keeps everything orderly and completely safe. Walking the streets in the area day and night is no problem. Mexican, international, and American shops, stores, and restaurants are everywhere. There's a Starbucks directly across the street from the hotel entrance and a Nike store just a block down. The hotel features two fine restaurants. The lobby restaurant is open for breakfast (7am) and lunch. For dinner there's the fourth floor restaurant, located on a terrace with a fantastic view of the Zocalo. Enjoy a multi-course dinner or just drinks while you watch the Mexican army lower the flag for the evening with much pomp and ceremony. During our stay we had several meals in both restaurants. Service is excellent as is the food. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Our room was exceedingly comfortable and quiet, complete with all the conveniences you would expect for a five star hotel. Everyone from the restaurant staff, to guest services (concierge), to the doorman, to our maid were all friendly, helpful, and extremely efficient. Most spoke perfect English. Right around the Zocalo you'll find lots of history, including the gigantic Metropolitan Cathedral, the ancient Aztec Templo Mayor Ruins and museum, the National Cultural Museum, along with a metro stop, and much more. Our stay at the Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico was an absolute delight.

It doesn't look like much from the street but once you climb the stairs to the lobby you realise you're in one of the most beautiful buildings in the City. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was very comfortable and quiet (best few nights sleep in ages), and location is excellent for exploring the Centro Historico and beyond. Highly recommended.

This hotel is beautiful but it was super eerie.. The grand lobby was constantly empty and dim. No background music, no chatter from guests, no noise whatsoever. I didnt see any other guests during our stay on our floor in the lobby or anywhere. It was dificult to even find the staff, although once we did she recommended some awesome local Mexican street food. Having such a huge beautiful old lobby and it constantly being dim and empty felt very creepy.
We attempted to go to the roof bar for breakfast but it was closed. Went back for lunch and it was closed. From morning to night I felt like I was staying in a ghost hotel out of a movie. It was beautiful but I would prefer somewhere with some signs of life for the next trip.

Thank you for your sincere words and opinion about your stay with us. As we are located in one of the most important touristic areas, our guests constantly seize this opportunity to enjoy the city and take some tours, going back to the hotel at later hours to take a break to their day and enjoying the peace and silence that we have at the hotel; virtue that is really appreciated by our guests after being at a hectic city as Mexico City. Since the hotel is placed in a historical building that is famous for its emblematic aspects like the stained glass ceiling and the panoramic elevators; a classic style and decoration are maintained in order to harmonize perfectly, offering to our guests a comfortable stay that enrapture them back to the warm environment of ancient Mexico, with the luxury and comfort of modern life.
As per the restaurant, we would like to mention you that at our restaurant “Terraza” the service starts at 1 pm, but in the main lobby we have another restaurant that starts service at 7 am with a delicious menu “Café Ciudad de Mexico” ; besides by the afternoon at the lobby level you can find our “Piano Bar”, an ideal place to enjoy an extensive range of beverages with the live piano music.
We can assure you that we have a professional and efficient staff that will always assist you with all your needs and special requirements because our main concern is our guests’ satisfaction and comfort, so we hope you consider visiting us again, for us will be a pleasure.
