There are many entrances to xochimilco, I recommend this one. The prices are published so no surprises with extra tariffs. It is safe and overall clean. Didn't try the food apart from the beers and the elotes, just because we planned to eat somewhere else. The marimba music it's a must!
I am surprised that this place has retained its world heritage listing. It was like floating down a market garden with the addition of new developments, restaurants and side shows. Furthermore we were hassled by every floating offering imaginable; floating bands, corn stands, trinket purveyors etc. If you are thinking a peaceful boat ride amongst world heritage gardens and tributaries this is the antithesis!
Dreadful. Touristy Destination No.1 - many reviewers talk about seeing a lot of drunkenness, etc. We didn't at all. Maybe that would have made it slightly more interesting.
Tacky, cheap and a waste of time and money.
This place is a screaming tourist trap, but that's okay. It gives you a vague idea of what Mexico City was like before it was built over, and there's nothing else like it in DF.
If you have time in Mexico City, take an hour or two to float through the gardens. We had one boat all to ourselves which was nice. If it is a weekend or a busy time, you might spend a little time in a traffic jam as you leave the "harbor." But even that is interesting to watch as the boat "drivers" maneuver with their poles and feet.
Once in the main canal, enjoy a lunch made alongside your boat. Enjoy watching mariachi bands serenade other boats or invite them to yours. There are also boats with desserts, drinks, toys and flowers.
A joy not to miss.
What a nice thing to do! Having lunch on a boat, being serenaded by musicians passing by on other boats. Relaxing, beautiful and so much fun!
