“Real quesadillas and sopes”
Reviewed 20 June 2013

Many of us in the US have a particular idea of a quesadilla. Well, prepare yourself for a reality check at Maria Isabel. I tried three different ones and had no regrets: pumpkin flower with cheese, huitlacoche with cheese, and rajas with cheese. They were all delicious, particularly the huitlacoche, a mushroom that grows on corn. I never heard of that before and was so excited to try it: lovely. I also had a nopalitos sope that had too much cheese (maybe I would have been better off to not have the cheese in every quesadilla), but was delicious. We were three people who decided to split the caldo verde con pollo (a green chicken soup that had rice, avocados, and other vegetables). This place is simple as I like and the food is so nicely done. Service is outstanding and the price is amazing: less than 10 dollars per person! I stay in Polanco whenever in Mexico City and will return to Maria Isabel over and over. Wow!

“Authentic Mexican”
Reviewed 26 February 2013

A gem within walking distance of the major business hotel. I asked the concierge at the Hyatt for a great local place and this is where he sent me, wonderful! The simple and economical fare is not only popular with visitors but with innumerable locals who frequent this place for lunch.

“A tradition in Polanco”
Reviewed 23 January 2013

This place has been in Polanco for many years!!! Cant miss the traditional cheese quesadila or the flautas are amazing, the salsas and the sour cream are a great complement to the dishes, the flavored water is always made from fresh fruit.
The service is good and the price is amazing!

“Very authentic and delicious traditional Mexican dishes”
Reviewed 1 November 2011

A great traditional restaurant that is always busy, located just off Arquimedes Avenue a couple of blocks from the elegant five-star hotel zone, Quesadillas Maria Isabel offers delicious and inexpensive Mexican treats. There is no ambience: the walls are white tile, the waitresses wear hairnets, there's a soda machine in the back to keep the pop cold, and the customers are handed a list of menu items to check off their own orders. No alcoholic beverages are served; children are always welcome. On weekends customers are lined up outside waiting to get a table. They offer fried quesadillas with fillings like beans and cheese, potatoes and chorizo, huitlacoche, chicharron, and brains. You can also get flautas, tostadas, and sopes, and even soups. Everything is fresh and delicious, and it's a challenge to spend USD 10 per person.
