A family member alerted me to this activity, having done the Culinary Backstreets Istanbul walking tour. So, 2-3 weeks ahead of arrival in Mexico City we booked for the Historico Centrico tour. This was to be our very first day in Mexico City, and our first visit and being avid foodies we thought this would make for an ideal introduction to that part of the city in which we would be staying, i.e. Historico Centrico. We were absolutely right, and not to be disappointed.
We met our guide very easily, just as arranged, outside the Sears building, and joined with 4 other visitors to form a small group of 6. Victor was our guide. He was extremely knowledgeable and a very adept communicator using English, we felt very welcomed and enjoyed Victor's company throughout.
The places we visited and the types of food and drink we experienced were so astoundingly varied and intensely interesting. I couldn't possibly do justice by providing a run down in this brief review. Suffice to say that this walking tour delivered exactly what we had anticipated. We got an orientation and introduction to a very notable district in Mexico City. We learnt all manner of things about Mexican cuisine, including what to look out for when travelling in other regions of Mexico (Victor was familiar with the Yucatan/Cancun area where we would be off to after Mexico City). And, we ate, drank, tasted and ate, drank and tasted some more. Four hours of this sublime indulgence.
Warning - you will be advised that there is lots of food to be enjoyed. So, arrive hungry. We did - we skipped breakfast - and it was a smart thing. Towards the back end of the tour we were struggling to find room for more food and drink!
This was a real highlight of our time in Mexico City. If you are a food lover, or you know little about Mexican cuisine and want to learn, this is the activity for you. It comes with my strongest recommendation. The bonus was as we subsequently travelled through different areas of Mexico we knew what was what when it came to the local food and cuisine.
