“You have not been in Mexico City, if you haven't been at Cardenal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 May 2014

Cardenal is a landmark of Mexican cusine. All dishes are simple and sophisticated at the same time, this is a busy spot at all times, and for a reason. Family owned, Cardenal is a must go for all people that visit Mexico City and want to experience a high end local cuisine. A little loud, very good decor.

“Eat here while visiting the Zócalo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 May 2014 via mobile

I like to bring my out-of-town guests here for lunch and then tour the Zócalo. It gets pretty busy around 2-3pm when the locals eat lunch.
The food is good and they offer a large variety of traditional Mexican food. They also offer some adventurous dishes such as Maguey worms.
The upstairs seating has a piano and often there is someone in suite playing classic songs.
Just know it's by no means a hip or trendy place but it's a decent spot to sit down and have a relaxing meal away from the crazy hustle and bustle just outside

“Nice environment, good for guests, but average food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2014

Average Mexican food (think Sanborns, VIPS, etc.), nothing surprising or excellent, but the atmosphere is very nice. Beautiful building, a nice mix of Mexican families and tourists enjoying the day, and very affordable considering it's a white tablecloth place. Overall I'd recommend a visit. Just don't expect any kind of foodie experience.

“Traditional Mexican food in the historic district”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 April 2014

It was a family reunion kind of visit, for lunch. We ate many small dishes to the center of the table to share, such as escamoles (ant larvae), chinicuiles (maguey moth caterpillars), mixiotes (barbecue wrapped in a maguey leaf skin pouch), huitlacoches (corn smut fungus) and other things we crave when abroad, rather than have mains for each person. We were provided excellent service, very nice ice cold Indio beer with the meal. At the end, we were so stuffed dessert was out of the question. (They do have other dishes, including fish, beef and lamb, tikin xic, etc.)

As others have said, it's usually crowded, so please book. For breakfast, be sure to ask for the chocolate (drink), hand whipped with a molinillo right at your table.

“Excellent service, average food”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2014 via mobile

The service was excellent we dined on the 3rd floor. I would recommend you go for the overall experience but the food is nothing to rave about. It is pretty average and in my opinion you can get better food elsewhere. The prices are not too bad. My family enjoyed the time here.
