Bed & Breakfast at the Oaxaca Learning Center

I had a lovely clean and quiet room off the garden with a private bath. The breakfast of rich dark coffee, home-made granola, and fresh fruit was anticipated each morning with a good appetite.
My cooking lessons were instructive and fun. We made delicious foods with many ingredients purchased at the local market in the am. Meeting the young people who are so intent on learning English and other subjects is inspiring. Do go to TOLC and be refreshed.

Room Tip: A studio apartment with patio is available too.

This is an excellent home-base for an extended stay in Oaxaca. The two-room roof-garden apartment is particularly fine – remarkably quiet and private. The two courtyard rooms are also clean and comfortable, with the add-on pleasure of a daily breakfast of fresh fruit and granola. Gary Titus – the gentleman who founded and presides over the school—is extremely helpful in helping you organize trips outside Oaxaca, and in helping you find your way around local markets. It is also gratifying to see the good work that the school is doing, and you are more than welcome to volunteer your time as you are able

The Oaxaca Learning Center offers guests the opportunity to stay in a small, friendly, and comfortable lodging. The Center is a few blocks from the zolaco (city plaza) so it's quiet, while still an easy stroll to the center square, restaurants, and museums. The center itself is a non-profit which offers students from surrounding rural areas a place to be tutored in math, science, and English. I was impressed with the work they do, as well as being delighted to have the opportunity to meet and visit with the friendly tutors and students. I hope to return to the comfortable rooms and tasty home-made yogurt, fruit, and granola breakfasts... and the delightful people I met there.

Room Tip: There are two guest rooms on the first floor that open onto a nice courtyard. There is also a nice r...

The Oaxaca Learning Center, founded in 2005, houses a tutoring center focused on math, science, and English language classes. The OLC's after-school tutoring and summer school programs are offered free of charge to teens and college-age students. Founder Gary Titus and staff have managed to arrange scholarships to secondary school and beyond for many deserving students. I stayed for three weeks. I was teaching a drawing workshop at the university. My wife was able to stay for part of this time, when she left I moved to the second room. I can report both rooms are tidy, nicely decorated, fully screened with private baths and bedside telephone. Outside the rooms is a patio cactus garden, and colonial style fountain, and hammocks.

Breakfast includes a homemade, special recipe, granola that includes amarinth, the grain of the Aztecs, fresh tropical fruit, and yogurt. Coffee is made as you like it, and tea or herbal teas are on hand.

Staff is very accommodating. I am allergic to down pillows. They found some foam pillows for me. My wife has a milk allergy, so we kept a carton of soy milk in the fridge for her daily breakfasts.

Clearly, this is not a hotel. During the day the courtyard becomes a classroom. My wife spent a few mornings as a volunteer English language partner for one of the students, which she found rewarding. It cost slightly more for the two of us, but for myself it was $210, weekly rate, bed and breakfast. Actually, I know of some fine hostals here that might cost the same amount with air conditioning and flat screen TV's in the room. Truth is, one doesn't need a.c. in Oaxaca, the rooms have ceiling fans and wifi, so I don't miss the TV. At the Oaxaca Learning Center I saw my money being used to support a very worthy cause. There is a global movement toward responsible tourism, and the OLC fits nicely into this movement. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Both rooms are fine, one has a double bed, one has twins. Since there are only two rooms plus and ap...

What can I add to previous posts? It's our second visit to the Oaxaca Learning Center (TOLC). Two years ago we happened upon the B&B during the September Independence Day celebration. This time we've rented the rooftop apartment for the month of December. Sadly there's no fresh breakfast available (like in the B&B rooms) but it's great fun to start the day with coffee and fresh fruit on our own sunny patio. The staff have thought of everything to make for a comfortable stay. The apartment as well as the downstairs rooms are clean and efficient. We really appreciate the good reading lights, mattresses and free wifi connection! Seems like there's always a fiesta going on somewhere in town. Today we enrolled in a Spanish School to study next week. Shopping for food becomes an adventure when spread amongst the many markets and shops. There is opportunity for a vegetarian cooking class with the resident chef at TOLC who's just compiled a book of recipes. We've discovered the nearby Oaxaca Lending Library run by local expats--a fantastic resource just a few blocks from TOLC. There are also lots of activities posted online, so you can choose to experience the tourist sites or the more local cultural venues. I am pleased to recommend this cozy spot to anyone who wants to help out or be a part of such a worthwhile venture. The location, facilities and competent staff will provide a secure resting place while you set off to explore Oaxaca!

I wanted to update my review of two or three years ago. The Learning Center is a much better place to stay now. Many of the students who use to mill around the courtyard and occupy the chairs and hammocks have been move around the corner. The school has expanded to a second location. This changes the whole experience of staying at the Learning Center. It is quiet and peaceful and I would definitely recommend it. All the good things that people say about it are true and the fact that the money you pay all goes to help the poorer students of Oaxaca is a great contribution.

Room Tip: Both rooms are the same size. One has a double bed; the other twin beds. If the roof top apartment...
